  • Today we’re on the highest part of the road from Bawtry to Gainsborough, equidistant between the two, being six miles from both. From its elevated position, in places it has some pretty amazing views. Lincoln Cathedral may be seen from it on a clear day, across the Vale of the Trent.
In the nearer distance, the Chesterfield Canal appears emerging from the tunnel at Drakeholes, and winds under the long ridge of hills which extends eastward to the Trent. The village has a rich history, and much of this has now been documented by the local history club, founded in 2010. Most of the information in this video came from their website - a fabulous resource and collection of information and photographs of how the village used to be.
A settlement has existed here since at least the Bronze Age and the site later found itself in close proximity to the Roman road running between Lincoln and Doncaster. Gradually over time the local shops closed and by the early 1970s only Cross Hill Stores and the Post Office next to the Blue Bell pub on the High Street remained.
Yet the village still remains a lively place compared to many commuter villages - you just have to seek out the many things still going on. If you enjoy celery it’s worth knowing that it was right here in Nottinghamshire that celery was first popularised as a food in Britain!
There’s a wharf and a brickworks to speak of here, and no end of other little bits to delve into. You can also stand on a hill fort which offers some amazing views, if you come to GRINGLEY ON THE HILL.

I was hoping to see the spot where the Methodist Church was near the end of High Street. My husband converted it into a lovely big house. My three sons used to fly there toy gliders from the top of beacon hill. That was 1976.

Lovely to see the old village. Thanks. You mentioned there had been two two pubs but there was a third, slightly outside the main village on the main A631 at the Beacon Hill end: The Cross Keys, which was a typical pub's name in places where the church was dedicated to St. Peter. There was also a third shop - the Top Shop - along the High Street near the Butcher's, though I'm not sure how long it existed for.

We used to drive from Haxey some white winters to sledge down the hill there. Not many other sledging opportunities in the Isle of Axholme.

Awesome. There used to be a petrol station just near the buttercross, you showed mick needhams butchers, there was also a fabrication business where the new surgery is. A car garage at the top of mill hill on the 631. Next to the school there was a piggery believe it or not. The old surgery used to be next to the blue bell. Also in the village was a gas works at the junction horsewells and finkel Street but that was before my time. I was born down middle brige in a house called iowa, now sheep wash farm. Village fetes were held at the home stead.

The garage in the village was also a general hardware store in the sixties and seventies; one of those places that seemed to sell everything. There was another petrol station and repairs garage on the main A631 pretty much opposite the cemetery.

I used to live here, the borstal was still there but closed down, I don't remember the big playing field though. We used to walk along the canal to misterton and west stockwith blackberry picking. We'd also walk the other way through drakeholes and onto Retford.
