- Scunthorpe is an industrial town in the North Lincolnshire district of Lincolnshire, England. It is Lincolnshire's third most populous settlement, after Lincoln and Grimsby, with a population of 81,286 in 2021.....join me for a quick look around the town.
Grew up there in the fifties, it was great then because the steel industry was booming, moved away when I left school and like most people never moved back. The steel industry is on its last legs now and nett zero madness will finish it. A typical British industrial town forced to change but it will go down fighting. Good luck Scunthorpe you gave me a great education and a happy start in life something which I fear is much more difficult for our young people today.
Thanks Ken...enjoyed reading your comment.
Large parts look like something out of 28 Days Later.
I read that a Scunthorpe councillor once complained about Internet obscenity filters eliminating his town's name, because Scunthorpe is the only town with a c*** in it.
All our industry were sold to china and india. Much of the west has done this. Deliberate spread of poverty.
Love Scunny. It's got a heart.
It sure has.
Left for Australia almost 17 years ago. Would never move back, but Scunny will always be where my heart belongs 💕
Hi Michelle..you never forget the place you grew up in ....i will never forget Ipswich...
Born & bred in Scunthorpe in the 60,s left about 30 years ago home is where the heart is.
sure is...thanks a lot.
Watching The Damned at baths was amazing, Smash it up! I was only young, but grew up fast. Bad Manners a few years later. Up the Iron!!!!
Neat Neat Naet
I live in Scunny, lived here half of my 40 years of life and I'm quite happy here, it's a home like anywhere you make one.
Thank you...appreciate the comment
I was four hours from home when I remembered I hadn't locked the front door to the house. Yup, was on my mind the whole weekend away, but didn't make that return journey! Indeed, so many of our small towns too are having a difficult time coming back from various setbacks, closings, and all that 2020 brought. I'll say one thing for Scunthorpe, it does look like it is being kept quite clean and tidy, so still a lot of pride in the area for sure! Have yourself a great weekend!
Thanks Bruce...yeah there are worse places than Scunny
Hi we laughed at your Stranglers anecdote about the lack of eggs. We have never been to Scunthorpe although we go to a plant nursery nearby. The park looks good bet it's nice on a sunny day. May have to check it out when we are next over that way for the nursery. Thanks for showing us around. Have a great weekend Dave and Dawn ❤
Aww...thanks folks..can you imagine coming down to no eggs for breakfast?...all in all Scunthorpe is not as bad as people make out....Thanks Dave and Dawn.
You've truly impressed me-well done!
Thanks....that's very kind of you
Makes sense to head back and check the car so you an enjoy the rest of the walk!
Great idea to seek refuge in the pub, just in case it may rain😁
Scunthorpe looks like a nice place.
thanks mate...it's not a bad little town
Great tour of Scunthorpe Steven and like you I often have to go back to my car to check it’s locked, dementia is such a problem at my age 😡 really liked the Steelworks Sculpture 👍 Yes your certainly right in saying most towns in this once great country (not anymore), are looking a tad rough round the edges. You certainly made the correct choice to head into the pub for a beer, well done to you. The only thing that could have improved this film would be to have Karen in it. Cheer Mike 🍺
Thanks Mick..i have been sitting here, patiently waiting for your video tonight, then i realised that this is Thursday night...drat 2 days too late.
Absolutely loved your energy in this video! Your surprise about Scunthorpe is hilarious 😂 Hope you got that snooze! 😴
Thank you!! 😁
I also have a massive soft spot for Scunthorpe
Worked in the steelworks for 6-7 months in the mid 1970s
Lived off Kingsway and also in the contractors village near the pub on the A18
Cheers mate....was the village Gunness?
Morning Steve
We always do that, have to go back and check doors 🙈
No eggs for breakfast!!!!!!
We've been to Bath Halls a few times too and a Wetherspoons pub near by.
Thanks showing a few more places in sunny Scunny
Have a great weekend 😊❤
Thanks folks....it 's a bit rough round the edge'd but a good old northern town.
What, no eggs? The problem with every town is that rates are too high, and businesses are being driven to the suburbs. Thanks for sharing, Steven.
Thanks Mate...appreciate your support.
Interesting wander.
The shopping precincts all look the same don't they - anywhere you go - although the covered shopping centre looked pretty vibrant!
Scunthorpe FC have been in big financial trouble lately.
Such a shame what's happening to our town centres.
Thanks mate..Scunthorpe was looking good, i can think of several places in a worse state, seaside towns seem to be the worst off.
What a great way to start out your hike. You had to check or like you said it would have been a worry the whole time. I would have said do you want me to go across the street and buy some eggs? Scunthorp didnt seem to be too bad. 👍
Thanks Craig...yeah it has a bad reputation but it seemed quite a nice little town...Shame about the eggs.
Thanks Steve. Never been myself. Looks like most UK town centres these. But still, it’s nice to get out and see somewhere different. All the best. X
It sure is....thanks Rachel
Pleased you realised about your car, best to check if you're not sure. Scunthorpe is not somewhere I've ever visited, so interesting to see. It is a very mixed place and you managed to find some nice bits, a dull day never brings out the best in a place.
Yeah ...i agree everywhere looks better with a bit of sunshine
Different walk today. Interesting to see new places.
B&B without eggs for breakfast😳
Always having to check doors are locked, also guilty of putting bread in fridge and milk in the cupboard 🙄🙄
Have a great week👍
Thanks so much....i love to explore towns almost as much as the hills...thanks for watching and commenting...it's appreciated.
Your right looks better than it's name suggests.. not a lot of folk about! Needs a few tumbleweeds to roll by in places😂 Glad you enjoyed that pint.😊❤❤
Thanks David...it's a horrible name ,to be fair...much better than i expected.
There's some interesting architecture and statues there and what looks like a good indoor market. Never been but it doesn't look too bad. And as for not remembering locking your car - well we've all been there! Nice one 🧸🐻
Hi there TBC, lovely to hear from you......The indoor market was lovely, a real credit to the town.
Thank you for the video like most towns you don’t see many people about.
Thanks Daniel...yes busy town centres are sadly now a thing of the past.
Good little video Stephen ..now I know all bout Scunthorpe…fancy no eggs 🥚 what are they like lol 😂…but yes I do agree bout the town being run down in parts ..but it fighting back ..looking forward to seeing the next video Stephen …
Thanks Ruth...not much to see here, but always appreciate your comments
really enjoyed your scunny video - not too much talking, just let the town tell its own story! good choice of music too.. and yes i thought it would be really rough and run down too.... pleased to see it's not too bad!
Glad you enjoyed it...the whole town was a pleasant surprise.
sunny sunny.. I drive there with work a fair bit but never have I gone into the centre.. nice to see
cheers...it's not a bad little town
My only knowledge of Scunthorpe was watching them play Southend United in the 1970's (60's?) when Kevin Keegan played for them, then pretty much unknown. It was refreshing to see you were pleasantly surprised by Scunthorpe. It must be really difficult for some of the former industrial towns to find a new identity.
Thanks Tom...oh yes Kevin Keegan..he was from Doncaster [ Armthorpe ]..what a hairstyle he had.
Good video
Thanks Naomi
Well I’m going to buck the trend. Born and bred in Scunthorpe and I couldn’t wait ti get away. I left over twenty years ago for the West Country, never looked back. Still have relatives there but I hate going back.
Thanks James...must be great living in the West country...we are down there at the moment on holiday..cheers for watching and commenting
Sunny Scunny! That's where I grew up. And just down the road from where you parked your car by the looks of things. Not an easy place to grow up either, it was tough. I can definitely say you shouldn't leave your car unlocked down there. It's as rough as f***. I think you covered Scunny well there. My favourite parts of Scunny are the parks and woodlands. Yeah, I think Scunny has always had a bad reputation but I can definitely say I've seen worse places!
Thanks Carrie....didn't know you were a Scunny girl..i was quite impressed with the place, don't know why it gets such a bad rap...same as my town, Donny...it has such a bad reputation but i can;t see it...Thanks a lot
Back in the late seventies Scunny was the armpit of the Universe. One can only hope that it has improved with the passing years.
Thanks Nigel...armpit of the universe, thats a new one on me...thanks for watching and commenting buddy
I left Scunny 20 years ago, it was iffy then. The steel works were bound to close sometime, its pretty much the main employer in the town. If scunny dies then so be it. Its my home town, but most of my family either died or moved on.
Thanks Alan...Scunny won't die, it has a huge beating heart...i see you moved on big style...thanks for the feedback, appreciate it
Thats a proper trick we would do.. leave the car unlocked all day!
Scunny. Now there is a place high on our list (shh, we are keen on Bradford and Grimsby too)
Pretty much all the same boat right now.
There might not have been eggs but there was world class B Roll and timing!
Have to say it looked full on bleak, our type of place!❤
I do believe you sometimes leave the car windows open all day too..ha ha.
@@atrampinthehills.841several times now doh!
The name Scunthorpe doesn't conjure up great expectations but it really didn't look that bad at all. Nice to see their Ray Lonsdale sculpture is being looked after (the same sculptor who created Tommy in Seaham). Congrats on the 800 subs Steve. Andy
Thanks Andy...back to 799, knew it wouldn't last long
Nice little film that. Love the Stranglers one of the few bands I've not got to see
Stranglers are a big fave with me...my era, along with the Damned.
@@atrampinthehills.841 I was a pistols, sham 69 exploited chap until I switched to metal 😂
@@thepeakdistrictviking wow...some great bands there..i was a great fan of all of them..i even had laced up boots and cordelroys
@@atrampinthehills.841 😂😂😂
I nearly visited Scunthorpe Steve,in February. I could have as i was staying at Mexborough to visit my friend who lives at Conisbrough. But i didnt. There are those places that have those Viking derived dour sounding names, its not Tourist Helpful! I thought Scunthorpe looked OK. There was some good entertainment billed at that theatre place. But I guess depends if you can afford a ticket. Can you and Karen do a walk around Mexborough some time,(maybe you have). I spotted a number of walk options but it was so cold and i had other things to do. Id like to go back in late summer.
Thanks Jane...you will not believe it but only the other day i was thinking about filming in Mexborough...who knows?..watch this space.
you do go to some top class places Steven lol the amount of tyres i pick up from scunthorpe theres loads of cash about lol you looked full of cold mate .
Yeah top class mate...Scunny is a special place
Wasn’t so bad to be fair Steven to be fair a good urban walk (can’t beat it )
ATB Simon 🤠
Cheers mate...a bit rough around the edges but a good northern town
Well you could have had some Golden Hash Brownies for your Brekky...Stranglers...oh dear forget it...Scunthorpe didn't look that bad really...pretty much the same as most places that had their bread and butter taken away from them...yeah right...any excuse for a Stella as we do...before you have a snooze check out my Sudden Change vid cos I give you a mention...Nice vid Steven...must say though I do prefer your 75 Peaks at the moment, but I do enjoy these as well...Cheers Les.🙂👍
Thanks Les...yeah i can't keep gallivanting over to the peaks at every opportunity...these little videos give me a sideline...however i will be out in the PD tomorrow for another walk
Don'i care what you do...All your vids are Brilliant.@@atrampinthehills.841
Couple of extra miles you could have got fish and chips from seafront at. Cleethorpes .. 😊 nice to see other cities and towns though
Thanks Simon...always good to visit these nearby towns....they make Donny look really good.
Sunny Scunny
but not today.
This is scunthorpe..we're so sorry.
Ha Ha....that's ok.
I've only passed through Scunny so can't pass comment but from the video it looks like one of those places where the people are the salt of the earth. Shame about the eggs but at least you got a good old pint of Nelson Mandela!
Can't beat a pint of Mandela...Thanks mate.
Hi Steve.
Enjoyed that. Totally get the point about the eggs. What’s a breakfast without eggs 🤷🏻♂️
Sadly I felt it looked really run down. Places like this are what built Britain yet now they are just losing their way 😏
Cheers Phil...no eggs, never heard of anything so ridiculous.
Sadly all these once industrial powerhouse towns have left is the spirit of the people.
It always shocks me watching videos of the city centres of once great towns and city's. I've walked around a few, Morecombe for example which really hit home the effects of a general lack of funding from council/government, impact of online e-com, then covid accelerated the effects of it all essentially.
High taxes, no prosperity, lack of jobs, leading to a generation with no goal or focus in life, boredom, drugs, mental health issues, depression. It's one big fatberg of social mess.
such a sad state we have gotten ourselves into...thanks so much for taking time to comment.
Moved here a year ago for work and it is so enriched it is sickening.
Ha Ha....Thanks for watching and commenting.
My mate's a local he calls it Scumthorpe. Full of foreigners. Liked because you used dub music for video.
Thanks...yeah i did notice a lot of foreigner in one particular street...yeah it thought the dub music worked quite well...cheers
I don't think there would have been a supermarket opposite The Royal Hotel last time your were over. It would probably have been The Old Showground at that point - Scunthorpe United's old stadium before they moved to Glanford Park.
Thanks Neil i was refering to the Sainsburys supermarket next door to the pub...thanks for watching and commenting...really appreciated.
The old showground used to be on the Sainsburys site until 1988. I'm not sure when you last visited.
Still no excuse for not having eggs, though.
I live in Swinton near Salford and Scunthorpe makes Swinton look like Beruit
ha ha...i can't be that bad.
I remember delivering in Scuny yrs ago when i used to drive wagons, tbh dint impress lol, no eggs for breakfast wtaf 😅👍
Thanks Jay.
Lived in scunny all my life and sadly it’s spot the Englishman here nowadays.
That's terrible...same in most places...certainly is in Donny, where i live
Think last time I went to scunny was when I dj'd in a pub about 10 years back 😂
Dj Danny...would have liked to have seen that.
@atrampinthehills.841 I'm sure I've plenty of vids still knocking about on my Facebook mate
Whoever put the 'T' in Typhoo put the cnut in scunthorpe...
Spot on!!!
You weren't expecting much and you think the towns on its knees!
You should be promoting these places not pulling them down.
Do you know Scunthorpe?
@atrampinthehills.841 know it very well.
@@foesure Cool...my second visit...i was quite impressed.
My home town. Left for Australia almost 17 years ago. Would never move back, but Scunny is still in my heart and my true home 💕
