I want to talk about something that I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about. I think it's actually the secret to why I’m able to draw the way that I do. In this video I share some tips for hyperrealistic pencil drawing that are a bit different to what I usually share. If you’re having a hard time drawing realistically, but can’t put your finger on why -- this video might be for you. Looking forward to hearing what you think!

Before I work on my main drawing, I always have this 6 minutes sketch habits where I sketch gesture or figure drawing. Just a rough sketch where I let my hand go freely with whatever strokes it want to go, and not trying to make this sketch a "perfect sketch". In that way I'm also learning to draw from imagination.

I can’t believe that you can actually look at a drawing like that and find something that you could improve. It’s very impressive and that’s an amazing skill!

Slowing down on an artwork really helps and taking a look everytime i want to get a specific texture from a far is one of the techniques i use,
The anxiety and fear of failure also helps on creating your best works.
    Another banger video! Thanks jono!

I've been struggling with one part of my current piece (drawing white hair!) so I finished the rest of the drawing and allowed myself time to ponder it instead of trying to force it. Now I can take my time and focus on the trouble spot without having the pressure of finishing the rest of the piece afterward.

Pace... such an eyeopener! I've never thought about my pace of drawing before. But thanks to your video I now realise that I go faster when I'm anxious. This is especially the case when I start a drawing - as I've just done. I started way too fast and it felt like it wasn't working. But when I went back to it today I was able to see some good parts and develop those into something I felt was actually good! Thinking about it now I realise that the slower pace was the key... the drawing was so much better and the enjoyment was so much more. Thank you for highlighting something I would never have thought of myself. Finding my pace is going to make my work so much better, for sure. I wonder if others have similar experience of faster pace when they start a drawing... I think, for me, it's to do with a desire to get down as much as possible due to lack of belief in my abilities until I can see something tangible on the paper.

Oh my word .. I DO THIS ! And not until this moment did I realize it.. I am a watercolor artist but the advice still holds. When things are not working the way I want them to, I will hurry up.. try to fix it as quickly as possible.. I do get stressed .. The love for what I am doing is lost in the frustration ... As my Dad used to say "The hurrier I go, the behinder I get" ... ; D This has been immensely helpful ! Thanks ! : ]

Jono, I read a chapter about the Cultivation of Concentration by James Allen in his book titled The Mastery of Destiny. In the chapter, he talked about the 4 levels of concentration which are Attention, Contemplation, Abstraction, and Activity in Repose. Basically, you can think of these levels as depths that come with the practice of concentrating the mind on a certain task that you would like to be good at or even come to master.
He explained that the first level is attained by all people, the second level is attained by most that can do a good job in whatever it is that their work is. The third level is the level of genius and it is broken into only through the highest deliberate practice and only a few people in the world get to taiste this level - in this level you can enter the state of flow but you slip in and out of it. People at this level have not quite mastered flow. The fourth level is where you enter the state of flow and master it completely, and only the Masters of their craft ever get to this level.
He explained that by encouraging yourself to concentrate by going into your work and attacking it vigorously you can train yourself to master your task and master the ability to enter the state of flow. So, the state of flow is something which you can encourage yourself to control and enter whenever you wish, you can master it. I think you are at the third level, the level of genius since you have not yet unlocked the ability to control flow.

I am wondering how you handle large areas for darkest graphite parts... are you using graphite powder? Painting it on, sticks, pencils?
I’m looking also fir a drawing course that talks about shading techniques ; I m just been trying to figure things out. I took a course called “secrets of shading “ with proko and it was good however I wish they’d only spoken about shading techniques : ) and if you ever come to states please I invite you to come to Danville, Va and draw with me large house, large spaces and large tables.... quiet, beautiful and I be honored to house you and set up times artists could come meet you and learn from you... and sure we can arrange a show for you. Lmk if interested! I can send u pics and get info for u if interested.
Love your work and your gentle honest loveful vibes. Bless even if not interested in trip to USA to beautiful Danville, Va.... also we could get u speaking n teaching at Duke, UNC, UVA, so many other big unis and colleges...

Thank you, Jean! That is very generous of you. I grate my own graphite powder and then use cotton wool and linseed oil to apply it to my backgrounds. I have a video on my channel that goes into more detail about this th-cam.com/video/TB4vhWSy_sA/w-d-xo.html I hope this helps!

    • @jeangonnella
      @jeangonnella 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I ended up finding that. Why do you use linseed oil? Sorry I’m just curious? And may I ask which graphite sticks you buy to make it.
You should become an affiliate of Amazon( or companies you use) and put links to products you use . If anyone uses that link on Amazon any purchases they make I think within 24 hours you’ll get a small commission. You might not want to do that for personal reasons but the customer isn’t paying more and so this lil extra money can add up and imo you deserve it.
I bought graphite stuck online and it ended up being a graphite pastel. It actually looks pretty nice and fun to work with just playing with it but i want pure graphite. I ordered sone powder just to test and was disappointed so I see why you’d make your own.
      Thank you for your help.
I’m trying Arxhes hot press 300 gram 140 lb paper today... I love drawing but I struggling why I do it cuz I can create cool images with computer programs and easily to do but something about doing it by hand I keep going. I was trained years ago in old sign painting and mural techniques and traveled the USA painting them and then I worked for big graphics productions for a ton of big cable channels like MTV, BET, CMT , etc etc, the Olympics, NFL halftime shows, all the big companies like Coke, Bowing, NASA, I could go on n on but I stopped completely and only messed around once in while and then about 3 months ago I become obsessed w graphite....
I heard you speak as to why you do graphite too..anyways, I’m still working on learning techniques but I’m getting ready to do my first drawing on this arched paper... I love working big but I starting with smaller paper till I get used to this new paper assuming I love it....I’m
A photographer too and it’ll come in handy.... I’m
Trying to come up with a really cool ideas so I can really be motivated to draw it... thank you for all you’re doing. I wish I could study with you.
Stay positive and live your voice and your very peaceful sweet honest demeanor... be blessed ❤️🧡💛💙💚💜🖤💕‼️💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽

Well this sucks. I have my 6 hour drawing exam coming up and I'm practicing for it currently. It's a huge piece filled with objects and will usually take me about 12 hours but I have no idea how I will finish in time. I spent 2 hours on just the outline and proportions.

Hi Jono. I want to talk to you about a product I'm using, but don't want to use your platform to promote it, well, not without your consent. I've tried to mail as well. How can I reach you?

As a writer, drafting at 70 miles per hour is ideal. Revising: 1 mile per hour.

My bad habit is refining sections before the story is done because the story never gets done.

This is inspiring in so many ways. I am fighting a mental block myself. I see your output and I get so intimidated. But I watch every one of your tips and hopefully one day I will break out

Along with what you said …you may also notice a change in the pace of your breathing. Stop restore your breathing by taking long slow in-breaths through your nose, holding for a few counts and slowly breathing out through your mouth. This will restore oxygen to those parts of your brain that help you control your process, rather than the reflex fight or flight mechanism that set in when we are facing a difficulty, and that lead to panic. A good technique to check out is 4-7-8 breathing technique. P.S. this technique improves greatly with practice, so that eventually you only have to remind yourself to “breath” to switch back to being in control. Keep up the wonderful work!

I've been struggling to find motivation when I encounter a challenging part of the drawing. I can start fine with the sketch and outlines but as soon as I get to shading and experience some difficulty I stop. I avoid it. Go to another section and tentatively confront my problem but I feel like this wastes so much time. I am still a beginner but I think I am scared to damage what progress I've made but I also know I have to risk destroying it to get better. It's such a mental battle! Thanks for this video.

    In my experience of drawing.
I completely love what I tend to draw
    No rush to complete fastly.
    No anxious about the result
Enjoy the process even draw for few minutes. Then I feel ecstasy on my drawing.
