He wears his heart on his sleeve, which you cannot really knock him for
Albeit I think that has worked against him this year as he has got himself in a very negative spiral in a car that doesn't suit him, while his teammate is able to consistently outpace him in qualifying
A winter break is much needed for Lewis. Hopefully he comes back rejuvenated, unawise he may be up for a repeat against Charles next year, in an unknown environment that has the car developed more down the Monaco driver's preferences.

Lewis doesn’t have the intel George has anymore. The car is being developed around George’s inputs predominantly (and have been since the beginning of the season likely). That’s not sabotaging mind you. That’s just facts. When a driver is leaving the team to a direct competitor, the team will restrict data presented to the driver that’s leaving because any data the driver has going to the other team can be used as reference data by the competition. You’ll note that Lewis has been complaining about not getting the right info about tire warm up. Likely he’s been guessing for some time what to do, which is likely why his pace seems to improve over a race distance as he gets more of a feeling in the car and identifies the optimal feel to put into the car.

Dude is capable that's for sure. It's just that he's a bit too aggressive at times. Like some of his moves on track are super boneheaded. Prime example this year was the Monaco incident. I know he saw a gap, but that was not the right move, yet he still went for it. Check out his Racing Point and Force India days, and his incidents are always with his teammates. He's always equally fast as them. It feels like he enjoys the challenge of having a tough teammate, and pushes it too far. With Pierre, there haven't been many incidents except monaco and australia, but there is a pattern in his driving that influences this need to prove himself. I hope in Haas he takes the role of the lead driver to guide a rookie, instead of yeeting into him every chance he gets. Regardless, I still like him as a driver. it's not that simple. that advantage disappeared in 2018, Lewis's best year, and he continued to win races and championships and continued to dominate, even in there non championship winning year 2021 they were one of the best when it came to chassis and aero, if not the outright best chassis. Their wind tunnel isn't built around these cars, so what they see there doesn't necessarily correlate with what actually happens on track, their computer simulators don't help either. The team just still doesn't understand this ground effect concept, and Lewis refuses to change his driving style as it clearly works in the races, but not quali. it's never as simple as "The engine is not Godly anymore" and if you have any basic knowledge of this team you'd know one of the reasons they were so dominant in 14-16 was because of how the engine department and the chassis department cooperated.
If you don't believe me, look at 2020; Mercedes: Greatest car of all time, Mercedes engine - Williams: Worst car of that year, Mercedes engine.

@@GameOver-nm2us Red Bull still had a slight edge in chassis/aero stuff compared to Mercedes in 2021, but the Merc engine was better. And I wouldn't read too much into Williams being that bad in 2020 and then conclude that the Merc engine wasn't that good. Yes, it wasn't as op as in the early turbo hybrid era, but of course at least in theory the engine will be the best fitting to the chassis for the main team, why would Mercedes supply engines to other teams to only make the customers faster than themselves? Williams was running on such a shoe-string budget at that point that no engine would have saved their 2020 season.
I do agree on your take about Hamilton: he excelled even when Merc briefly lost their engine dominance, but he clearly has an issue with adapting to the ground effect cars.

@patepulkkinenvtec2403 McLaren are on their way to win the constructors championship (the championship the shows the actual best car) with the Mercedes engine, the argument that Williams weren't as good because the engine didn't fit their chassis is not right. In 2021, Mercedes didn't have an edge in the engine department, but more so the fact that the car was better in the straights because of their aero package. But in my opinion, when it came to corners, Mercedes and Redbull were neck and neck, sometimes the Redbull was better in more bumpy tight street circuites, but then Mercedes bit back with traditional smooth sailing tracks with long straights. Sure, yea, Mercedes does design their engine around their chassis and vice versa as I mentioned, it was the biggest reason for their huge success in the mid 2010's, but as we can clearly see now it has little effect when the team knows how to build a car.

Since he announced that he is leaving at the beginning if the season, he suddenly doesn't know how to drive anymore and is being dominated by Russell and nobody finds it weird ?

The points gap was explained by just four races, one of which was a mechanical DNF where Hamilton lucked into 2nd. Ferrari had a lot of bad luck in 2023, that flattered Merc, and this year they got exposed. You're also implying that Russell couldn't have improved from last year to this, despite him making a lot of unnecessary mistakes last year. The Spa DSQ makes it look close, but the points gap should have been bigger. Hamilton has mentally checked out, just as he did at McLaren. And Mercedes are focusing the updates on Russell. Russell would have finished 7th if LEC and HAM hadn't been DSQ'd. 7th is 6pts. 2nd is 18pts. So the DSQ of both drivers cost Hamilton 12pts. With Russell promoted to 6th, he gained 10pts back on Hamilton. Hamilton gained more points on Russell from 4 rounds that he did for the rest of the entire season. Hamilton made mistakes in '23 also, just not in races where Russell was also on the podium.
AUS +18, CAN +15 and SIN +15 were the biggest points swings for Hamilton. Australia was an engine failure for Russell, and Singapore was a last lap mistake where he was ahead of Hamilton. Russell made a couple of costly mistakes, but just looking at the points gap and pretending Hamilton was a lot better is silly. 30% of that points gap is down to Australia. People are comparing '23 to '24 and pretending it proves that the cars aren't equal anymore. That's a dishonest conclusion based on a misrepresentation of 2023.

Then he made 56pts over him from 4 races (one where Russell had an engine failure, and one where Russell made a mistake on final lap while ahead of Hamilton, which accounts for 55% of the points gap at the end of the season). Russell's biiggest gains over Hamilton were QAT (Hamilton's own error), USA (DSQ) and ABU totalling 35pts.
"but it’s not looking good for Mercedes if their outgoing driver is only a handful points behind the driver who should be leading the team next year."
You mean including Hamilton's 25pts at Spa where Russell was DSQ'd?
You're not really comparing performance, because the points are skewed by context. You've no idea what is being "held back" from Hamilton. That's purely speculation on your part that Hamilton should be automatically ahead in equal cars.

It's not that simple. Fundamentally, it's still a competitive sport. And one thing that is super common when you know one of your driver's is leaving for one of your rivals, is to start holding back information, letting you participate less often in debriefings and development discussions, etc. All because you'd be giving too much info to the rival team indirectly. These things automatically cause you as a team to develop the car towards the driver whose comments will be relevant beyond the next few months. Is it fair, no. Is it malicious or favoritism? Also no. It's business and competition. Toto may be Lewis' friend, but he's also a CEO and Team Principal that needs to start delivering again in a time of general slump for the team since the days of dominance. Also, as a team, it's really hard to feel motivated to put 1000% effort into someone who is clearly checked out and demotivated by the state of things at the team in relation to him. The primary job of a lead driver, is to race like hell, but also to lead and be a figure that can motivate the team. Lewis has always been great at that. But realistically, he's no longer that leader. Russell is, because Kimi cannot be. And we're seeing Russel changing amidst all this. His attitude, bravado, aggression, and confidence in his statements are all increased now. Will this result in him being a good leader? I'm not so sure, but only time will tell. But Lewis is certainly not the leader anymore. And that also has a big impact. We're not talking about people who sit back and once in a while hear the words of their leader like in a corporate office. We're talking about day in, day out. And it doesn't matter who you like. You listen to the one that is in the position that you have to listen to. Hopefully, you like them, and the result is then a good working relationship.

Either way, Toto doesn't want to give Lewis' replacement more than one year because they want Antonelli in F1 by 2026 and don't have any other option. And Alonso doesn't want a 1 year contract because he wants to go on for longer than that, and his options would be very limited if any were available.

Alonso is a potential race winner and a great driver, but with someone as young and good as russell, you can potentially get like 10 years out of him. Thats not happening with alonso, and he's not cheap. So it doesn't make sense to pay someone that amount of money for a year.

I mean Toto saying Lewis has a shelf life and they needed to think about ditching him for a younger model must have gone down really well. I will understand this video, if their teammates have been outperformiing in qualy all the time. But it is happening in their final years at their teams. Ocon was outperforming Gasly at the beginning of the year before the Monaco incident and his move to Haas. Lewis had outqualified George in 2022, tied with him in 2023. And the year he is losing comprehensively to George is coincidentally the year Lewis is leaving the team. The other side of their garage have been given more resources to extract performance from their cars , so it is not paranoia. It is not the first time Lewis had wanted to give up in a race. Germany 19, Spain 22, yesterday. He still continued, so it is not unheard of ..

I don’t understand why the teams hide it or why people find it objectionable that it happens. Why would a team invest as much in an asset they’re losing as they would in one they aren’t? Of course some drivers are given favoritism within teams. Usually, there’s a good reason for it. To claim russel is better now cuz he’s got more support within the team is to also admit he was lacking to Lewis before because Lewis had that same preferential treatment. Same can be said for the Ocon gasly situation.

  • @charlesjmouse
    @charlesjmouse หลายเดือนก่อน

I would suggest Hamilton has never been in the position of not being top dog in his team where everything is tuned to suit his preferences. From a psychological and skill perspective he's struggling with a situation most drivers learn to cope with early in their careers while coping with lesser machinery and lesser reputations.
Either Ferrari with put LeClerc on the back burner while Lewis there and he will probably bounce back, or they won't and he won't.

It is not much however in the fears fight between 6th and 8th place, a couple of points decide where you will end with millions in price money.
Before Brazil so till Mexico, I count the points on this Results screen 6×10th and and 4×9th = 6+8=14 points. Then Brazil** 15+18= 33 points = 47** and 10 points from Gasly in last race Qatar is 57 points, however official they have 59 points.
