Ilur sailing dinghy 'Nomvula' maiden sail sept 2023

Last week my new boat was ready to take her out for her maiden sail. And what a joy!
It's an Ilur, a French design by Francois Vivier. I built the Classique version, the original design with steam bent frames, riveted to the hull. I choose the sloop rig version over the standing lug rig, to be able to sail a little more windward. Take a look for an impression of Nomvula ('After the Rain') sailing the lakes and canals of Friesland.

Beautiful job! I now wish I had gone with the sloop rig on my Ilur. I have a lug yawl "classic" Ilur. Next boat will have a headsail! Congratulations!

You call the boat a sloop, yes? However it looks to me like a Gaff rig... / Gunter rig type of thing? I'm probably wrong; but curious.

Thanks! Yes it is a lug sloop rig, meaning here that is has a mainsail and a jib. The classic Ilur rig just has a mainsail. The mainsail is a balanced lug.

Hello Kemp. Wat een boot heb je gebouwd. Ikzelf droom al jaren van een Ilur maar durf er zelf niet aan beginnen. Had jij al ervaring met het bouwen van boten? Moet je een handige harry zijn? Grtjs uit België

Hallo Gilbert, ik had nog geen boot gebouwd, maar ben wel handig met hout (meubelmaker) en heb een grote werkplaats. Al met al viel het me mee. Het kost vooral veel tijd en die tijd moet je ook echt nemen. Zeker als je geen CNC-pakket als basis gebruikt. Maar zie alle blogs en je merkt dat ook veel amateurbouwers er aan zijn begonnen en het ook hebben afgemaakt. Het is dus te doen!

Very nice. But better if sailed flat going upwind which can be accomplished by putting one's arse on the rail (obviously not done here.)
