THE BEST set of instructions on how to install one of these I have seen on line bar none (including what KAD provide). Legend. As mini owner, thank you!
Another cracking video! I'm now considering the KAD shifter although I may just go for a new bias barrel instead. My only minor criticism is I would love to have seen the throw of the new shifter in comparison to the old one! Love the fact you kept in the roll pin mishap, rather than edit it out - these jobs never go perfectly to plan!
Another fantastic video lads! Absolutely love your style and although unintentional, it’s great that you showed how to get the pin back if your shop towel fails to catch it! Maybe a magnet would be a good idea next time?
With a standard gearbox, a lot of people find it will rapidly reduce the synchro dogs. You can be more likely to change quicker than the spinning stuff in the box wants you to, especially if you have worn bulk rings. But it does shorten the shift, great for a race car where you don’t care as much for mechanical sympathy.
Nice piece of kit. A top tip, well under there lock wire the two roll pins on the sleeve connecting the rod to the gearbox input, as these can fall out, usual at the most inconvenient time, and it will be raining.
Nice video, again. Cheers for that, mate. I´ve added a M6 lock bolt to the top collar (theaded it M6 near the edge) so I can adjust it and it stays nice and tight. Just an advice to all the others: !!! DON´T BUY THE CHEAP 35£ ONES !! as they are poorly engineered and don´t justify the investment for the benefits you are trying to achieve.
Took me hours to get the pins out. I didn't have the proper tool and used an old screwdriver. I'm also a rugbyman, which means that most jacks don't lift the mini high enough for me to have enough strength on the hammer. After two unsuccessful hours, I decided to solder a small hexagon head on a spare steel bar I had, and punched it from the far side of the car. In minutes, stuff was done. For the pins, just get your little brother to hold a magnet stick while you punch it, I had no problems of lost pins. If like me you happened to have your seat far from the dashboard, the gear lever is too short, you have to push your shoulder forward. KAD uses a M14 1.25 knob, and you won't find any prolongator with those metrics. You can find on AliExpress or eBay long shift knob (18cm) in aluminium with a self tap plastic screw that will make shifting a breeze. You will gain a bit more travel though, since the lever is further away from the pivot. But to me it feels really nice.
The must is to put a KAD shifter for Moke in a sedan Mini ;). The shifter felt just under your hand and you avoid to have a too short throw like the std kad. You should try, it is the best of both worlds
My supplied bolts on the shifter wouldn't thread in. I'm not bought some other self tapped bolts. It never did tighten up super tight. I think the supplied screws might be in between sizes or something. I did take a test drive and everything seems fine and is definitely an upgrade.
Thanks for vid, looks like a great car you’ve got there. Did you manage to measure the “throw” of the gear-lever before and after? Would be interested to know the results. Also I’ve been thinking about doing this to my ‘80s classic alfa spider which has an unusually long throw. Any chance you have one of those lying around? 😜
Yes! Was this ever made? I just got mine fitted on, it is great but having difficulty finding 3rd gear shifting up. The shifter would go too far right and still has a little play missing the 3rd. Any advise??
Don't throw away your stock shift rod stick as mentioned... Worn remote shift housings cause KAD Quick shifts to shift badly... causing frustrations and return to the STOCK shifter assembly. Many shifter housings are very worn out with the age of these cars today. A proper rebush is required to return tolerances and working shifting to a KAD Quickshift.
You can cut the top of it off until it gets slightly wider or cut a slit down the top, neither look particuliarly nice i guess you could try hestinf it up a bit and stretching it over ?
Just had a KAD shifter installed. The lift ring for the reverse gear seems to annoyingly rattle. Has anyone experienced this? Have tried tightening it by twisting also...
Hi Philip, do the two self tapping screw mess up the hole to put a regular shifter back in??? say I wanted the orginal Shifter back in the car after installing the KAD???
Where do you order the KAD shifter from, direct from KAD? Also was hoping you'd walk through replacing the shifter seal, since it's a common leak point, and you're already under there.
We try to order directly from companies when possible. That's a good idea about the shifter seal. Many leak, and we'll be doing a video on the upgraded shifter seal kits in the future.
Installed this KAD Quickshift after seeing your review. Install when smooth but for some reason will not go into third gear? Only other thing I did was replace the oil seal. Any help would be appreciated.
Nah man! What you should be installing is the 2 foot long gear lever from a '59 Mini that goes through the firewall right by the headlamp dip switch. 😂
Aware this is an old video but I’ve just bought the kad short shifter and for the life of me I can’t get it too fit it won’t go far enough down over the housing to be able to get the two small bolts into the existing holes have you heard of anyone else having this problem the shifter is from mini sport and seems to be genuine
Hi Steve! Thanks for the video!!! Im wondering that its not possible to change the knob??? and other thing the stick of the KAD is larger than the stock one?. IM owning a 1991 Spi Im a tall guy (1,87 mts) and im always fight for the lenght of the stock stick shift. Can gime some tip??? Regards from Spain
Slot Car Racing Argentina unfortunately the kad knob is integral with the shifter as it has a nifty lift lock for reverse. There are other brands that allow for stock shift knobs to be used, but not the KAD one
That is the only reason I have not bought one of these, or any short throw for that matter. KAD makes the best out there but I do not want to use that shift knob as my current one if very special. The integrated reverse lock-out is cool but I'd wish they would do another version without it.
Q: for those lacking a Classic mini to work on yet inspired; how do I get my hands on a mini that needs to be restored. I am about to buy a seat and a steering wheel and put it in my living room so I can pretend.

coming from rear-wheel drive most of my life, I thought you were dropping your transmission. "Oh, dear god" was my exact words in my head
Glad to see you don't wear gloves and are not afraid to get your hands dirty

Would have like to have seen comparison between the Oem and kad shifter...especially the throw reduction.
Nice piece of kit.

Great minds :D
Love your channel so informative and don't even own a mini... yet! Keep it up (new sub)
Great video!! I need a Mini back in my life!

Brilliant product, the video was spot on. I’m having trouble putting it into first - any ideas?

Because of you I want to buy another mini !
I have one on my 1275. I love it
How well does the shifter work??
My supplied bolts on the shifter wouldn't thread in. I'm not bought some other self tapped bolts. It never did tighten up super tight. I think the supplied screws might be in between sizes or something. I did take a test drive and everything seems fine and is definitely an upgrade.

How about some footage of the shifter in action?
TRUTH SEEKER we've had enough questions about the throw that we'll be doing a comparison video in the future.
Yes! Was this ever made?
I just got mine fitted on, it is great but having difficulty finding 3rd gear shifting up. The shifter would go too far right and still has a little play missing the 3rd.

Hey bro may I ask what air filter suit for my mini 1000 carb?
I fitted one, all worked well, but the throw is short & requires more effort. As its only for road use, I would actually prefer the std stick.
They sell a standard throw shift kit as well that also gets rid of the lift to reverse
Anyone know how you put the shifter boot back on after installing the shifter?
You can cut the top of it off until it gets slightly wider or cut a slit down the top, neither look particuliarly nice i guess you could try hestinf it up a bit and stretching it over ?
The pins will not budge for me, any suggestions?

What was the throw reduction? Thanks
We covered this is a separate video. Check out the shifter comparison, another short throw is compared as well.
Thanks, found it. I only just started watching you guys I will have to catch up on all of your videos. Cheers from Australia
Hi Philip, do the two self tapping screw mess up the hole to put a regular shifter back in??? say I wanted the orginal Shifter back in the car after installing the KAD???
id like to know this too
we have a 5 speed gearbox on our Mk 4. Would the KAD shifter work on that gearbox as well?
I'm pretty sure that 5 speed gearboxes have their own specific shifters. But you would get the best answer from the gearbox manufacturer.
Where do you order the KAD shifter from, direct from KAD? Also was hoping you'd walk through replacing the shifter seal, since it's a common leak point, and you're already under there.

Did you solve the problem?
dnbmania yes. It was the plate on the bottom gear lever box. Had it on the wrong way. Lol
Nah man! What you should be installing is the 2 foot long gear lever from a '59 Mini that goes through the firewall right by the headlamp dip switch. 😂
Super))Schort schifter👌🔥
I fitted the twin of this to my Mini (non KAD but identical) and I can only get 3rd and 4th gears, any ideas?
Check your linkage for worn bits
@@Stevestonmotorco Not that, I screwed the new reverse light switch in too far.
Glad to hear it's sorted

hello, did you solve the issue? how?
I am doing this in just a few minutes. Just finished put a new steering wheel on.

@@Brivinci1 Hey Brian - I just got the short shift kit. Should be installed in a few weekends. I'll take some photos and send them your way.
Any one else installed one of these and found that it is very tight ?????
Im currently trying to fit and it is being a bastard, it is really tight to get down far enough to get the bolts in, the movement is also very tight
@@duncanmacleod5148 how did you get around this I cannot get it far enough down
