My favorite group although the reached their peak at Hotel California, they were never as good after that. Great to see live in concert! Take it to the limit was their best song, Randy was so underrated as a singer and was so shy he enjoyed just being in the background.
Their best lineup was Frey, Henly, Walsh, Meisner and Felder. The original lineup was great, but the afore mentioned lineup was stellar !! The Eagles of today are just a shadow of things passed. No question of the musicianship of Frey’s son, Vince Gill (a fantastic musician in his own right) and T.B. Schmidt. Keeping the music alive, but not the stellar group that created some very powerful and memorable songs. IMHO…..
Bernie came from group The Flying Burrito Brothers with ex-Byrds Chris Hillman and Gram Parsons who were considered pioneers in fusing rock, blues, soul and especially country into a unique genre all its own. It would pretty much define the laid back Southern California ethos for at least the first half of the decade. Interesting side note: Burrito Gram Parsons had befriended Keith Richards while on tour with The Byrds during their stay in the UK. He gave Gram "Wild Horses" which the Burritos covered nearly a year before The Stones released their own work. He would go on to release two critically acclaimed solo albums before dying of a drug overdose in Joshua Tree National Park in 1973 at the age of twenty six.
I remember when I bought the Hotel California album, opened it up and saw that Joe Walsh was in the band. I was 13 years old and said to myself, “This is gonna kick ass !!”
“Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles” is a great insider’s memoir from Don Felder’s perspective detailing the group dynamics that went into producing all those great songs. It is a fascinating book. If you read it don’t expect to love Don Henley and Glen Frey, who were driven by greed and power, according to the author.
Yup, to this day Henley, who is worth over $200M still hawks covers of his songs on You Tube by little nobody bands that just play the songs because they love them. He blocks his own music like an a-hole.
@@Jugivadi you do know don felder does the exact same thing? he takes down all of his solo stuff and concert recordings. its a mentality both henley and felder share
As a life long fan of the Eagles, I watched this video to see if there was anything I didn't already know about the band, and as I figured, nothing was "new" news to me. Yet I found all the information here accurate; the good, the bad, and the ugly..... The Eagles story was encapsulated truthfully, and I applaud that. I however have one comment about the Eagles Rock&Roll Hall of Fame indoctrination. I've read where Randy Meisner's guitar was not plugged in (purposely), he had to just play along on stage. Whose idea was that? That was incredibly disrespectful to the man who wrote and sang one of their biggest hits "Take It To The Limit".
Yes, I read about that too. I believe it was Frey’s idea. He also directed Randy and Bernie to stand at far right and far left of the stage, respectively, as if they were in the wings of the stage - like session musicians, not really part of the band - and out of the central camera shot! I Such disrespect shown to them, except by Timothy Schmit who acknowledged (at the induction speeches) Randy’s part in the success of the band. Also, during the performances, Timothy often looked at Randy thereby *including* him. I saw Randy singing with heart, even tho his instrument was unplugged. I suspect that Bernie’s instrument was also unplugged at the RnRHOF induction, but that Bernie didn’t know it - at one point in their rendition of Take It Easy, Bernie moved over to the equipment to fiddle with it, then looked at Frey with daggers in his eyes. Bernie had to stand there playing a (probably) muted instrument, while Joe Walsh hammed it up playing the lead riffs that *Bernie* had written, and with his back to Bernie - I would have expected Joe to face Bernie and play *with* him, to acknowledge Bernie’s authorship of those leads. During their second song, Bernie turned the tables. - he beckoned Randy to join him at centre stage, behind Glen’s back and under Henley’s nose, and the two of them hammed it up as if they were playing live instruments! I loved that! They seemed to be having such fun! Bernie had written all the iconic music for their first all-Eagles hit, Witchy Woman, and had also written and played on their first FIVE albums. Randy had written the first Eagles million seller, and had played and sang on their first SIX albums. Don Felder joined Eagles in 1974, shortly before Bernie left, but the band was already quite successful before him. However, both Joe Walsh and Timothy Schmit joined a band that was already successful - they were not in the trenches, tirelessly touring and playing gigs to build their rep, like Randy and Bernie were. Barely two years after Randy left, Eagles broke up,for 14 years - and when they got back together there were few albums of new material - basically Eagles became a cover band doing re-runs of the hits from the first 6 albums - from when Randy and Bernie were in the band. Despite that, both Randy and Bernie were not included in the Kennedy Centre honors induction - that was not right.
@@ingfig1 Thank you for breaking down some of the facts of the behind the scenes dynamics of the group as they appeared that night. I really love the music that the band made together collectively with all members contributing such unique qualities that all came together perfectly. Without Randy’s high harmonies and Glenn’s subtle vocal “twang”, or Felders flawless guitar playing, they will never be The Eagles as they once were.
@@lucashawkins5335 .. yes, I couldn’t have said it better. The combination of their talents was unique, and for me that combo was best with the four founder members.
One cassette my mother owned when I was preoccupied with cartoons, wrestling, and things that went "BOOM" was the Greatest Hits 71-75. It kinda stuck out since she was listening to a lot of Motown, Elvis and other artists from back in the day during that time. I never thought much of it. I never really heard my mother play it when I was in the car. Then suddenly in my little corner of the universe in the spring of 2001 the song Hotel California became somewhat ubiquitous. I heard it everywhere. I really couldn't complain, because listening to that was better than some of the other options at the time. Cosmic coincidence? Regardless I bought Greatest Hits Vol. 2 so I could jam out to Hotel California, as well as sample some other songs through the summer. I couldn't get enough of it at the time. I gradually came to like most of their music. It must have been a hell of a time seeing them live at the time.
Thanks for posting this brief documentary, Grunge. I have never been an Eagles fan, but a huge Joe Walsh fan! The Eagles were Top Forty; Joe is creativity, heart, and artistry. It would be heavenly to see Joe Walsh, Don Felder, and Joe Vitale unite playing just Joe’s matchless catalog. We can dream, can’t we! 💛🙏🏼
2:02- So the Eagles were upset that Azoff releasing a greatest hits album without their permission was " a slick way to earn extra bucks." Funny they didn't seem too upset when they denied Don Folder royalties from Hotel California even though he brought the song to the band. Or the many times Frey and Henley " retired " the band only to repeatedly tour , charging insanely high ticket prices. That sounds like a pretty slick way to make some extra bucks, Dontcha think ? It's common knowledge that Frey and Henley are two of the biggest money grubbers in rock music history.
I believe that was all settled with the law suite. Eagles Non-discloseure kinda went out the window when Don started touring doing a lot of old Eagles material, even some of the stuff before he joined the band suggesting that he got the rights to use all Eagles material up to the day when he was kicked out of the band. I remember Don doing an interview where he said he wasn´t too keen on the $100 concert, that their music was for the fans, the behind the back dealings of Frey and Henley and the political benifit at Long Beach with Glenn telling Don "Ya, I´v Been Paying Your Wages For The Last Seven Years" was the straw that broke the Eagles Back. You don´t say that to a sitting memeber of a corperation with 1/3rd interest!
Actually, they didn't withhold royalties for that song from Felder. Royalties are paid by record companies - in the case, Asylum. They did, however, poach more money from the band's touring, merchandising. Frey and Henley charged millions of their personal expenses - from cocaine to massages to private jets - to the band, so that's stealing. Azoff only protected the interests of Henley and Frey, even though he was supposed to be Felder's manager, too. I'm glad Felder was finally able to pinch them for many millions.
Pretty BS to not even mention Don Felder in the band until the story of the break up. The man wrote Hotel California. The Eagles were viewed as a country band until Felder’s guitar rocked them up. You didn’t even get his firing correct. It wasn’t so secretive. Glen Frey was being greedy and wanted him and Henley to get paid way more than the rest of the band even though their contracts always had them all paid equally.
felder wrote the music henley and frey wrote the lyrics to hotel california and henley sung it so it was a collabaration henley and frey wrote most of the eagles music and did most of the singing and were the driving force behind the band you are giving felder way too much credit he did not make the eagles they were a group of talented individuals who made great music and thats all that matters in the end
they had dozens of other hits besides hotel california including take it easy take it to the limit lying eyes witchy woman one of these nights i cant tell you why desperado best of my love the long run heartache tonight i could go on but it might take a while no don felder did not make the eagles he was just a part of them and if felder was so good why did he not go on to be a solo artist after they broke up i seem to remember henley and frey having a few hits of their own without don
@@johnsmith-ub7vr The song writers get more (or all) of the publishing..... not more of everything. They had a contract, Felder was - on paper - an equal member of the band. Frey and Henley (with the help of Azoff) were poaching more than their share of the profits from touring and record sales and merchandising. They were stealing from Felder (Schmidt and Walsh were contract members - they did not share in net profits, but were drawing salaries). Felder insisted on seeing the "books", they fired him. Like it or not, that's what happened.

I heard and interview o u tube with randy meister and he sounded like he was in pretty good health at least mentally he came off as a lovely person the interviewer was really good and it was like in 5 different parts but randy spoke about eagles but he kind of looked at it in context they where 4 guys all very talented his beautiful voice was at the highest end of there register right above Henley and those high notes at the end of take it to the limit where not falsetto and his bass playing was excellent but he really didn't have anything bad to say about any of them he said they where basically early twenties guy that got big real fast and there where tons of temptations drugs alcohol and of course lots of young girls and he was married had to kids but he gave in who wouldn't but he was not a front man he was shy and would rather just play bass and sing harmony and Glen would always push for him to do take it to the limit as the encour and some nights he just felt like he couldn't do it justice and he didn't want to let the audience and the bad to know it but he always gave in and hearing him do that song live was as good as the record and it really passed me off that they discarded half the original band like garbage so I love there music but Henley and fry where very talented but as people that's for each of you to decide they even got jealous of each other towards the end
Anyone that has a free Bobby Knight t-shirt on is awesome. R.I.P. Glen just wishes you and Henley would have calmed the dictatorship down. Felder was Hotel California!
Amazingly talented group of musicians from the original members to the most recent ones. I just wish Don Henley would quit taking every video of Randy Meisner singing "Take It To The Limit" off of TH-cam as soon as someone uploads it. Like don't you sing "Get Over It"?
You stated Take it Easy was "co-written" by Jackson Browne as if he had a minor role it penning the song, when in fact it was the other way around, Frey contributed the line "..standing on a corner in Winslow, Az...", Browne had been struggling with one line, and Frey added the famous lyric. Other than that, it was Browne's song, he was persuaded by Frey to allow the Eagles to record it before he released his Everyman album on which his version appears. The eagles version was released before their debut album as a single with a song (Get you in the Mood) on the B side that never appeared on any of their albums.
In 1994, the Eagles were set to performed at the Capitol Center MD. I and my roommate were on the phone speed-dialing at the ticket place for 3 hours straight, but they were sold out! Ouch. Hotel California is my favorite.
$250 for two lawn seats & program, at the VA Beach Amphitheater, only a few months after spending $500 for four tickets to Woodstock '94, in Saugerties, NY.
Irving Azoff has taken plenty of criticism for many things over the years - including from the Eagles members themselves over that first greatest hits release in the mid-70s - but that record turned out to a monster. And rather than hindering sales of the new Hotel California record - as some in the band thought it might - it probably helped it immensely.
Did anyone else notice that the video skipped over the segment where the Greatest Hits album surpassed Thriller in 2018 as the all-time biggest selling record of all time?
sorry but Meisner & Bernie Leadons guitars were turned off by request of Frey & Henley at the 2008 rock & roll HALL OF fAME.. Leadon came back in 2013 & played with them. Meisner was physically unable but rFrey made it clear he no longer held any grudge.
yes in my opinion they were no longer the eagles after Don Felder was sacked over greed It just left a bad taste They keep adding new members but will never be the same again all about making money now
Its well known that Don Felder was denied songwriting credit over and over on many songs by the Eagles. He wrote the gorgeous arrangement for perhaps their greatest song 'Hotel California' and had to fight to get credit for that. Henley and Frey were and are all about Greed and Money. Look how many frivolous lawsuits Henley has filed over the years for so-called 'copyright infringement' some of them absolutely laughable. And after all the great music they created Glen Frey goes ballistic on Felder for not knowing who Senator Cranston was?! WTF? Don was and is a virtuoso on the guitar.
Felder actually came up with the iconic bass line in One of These Nights on top of the guitar parts and blistering guitar solo. He should have got a cowrite for that song due his great input into the music.
@@iangray1010 Don Felder should be considered in the same league as Eric Clapton and Duane Allman imho. He really has everything - gorgeous tone, a great sense of melody and can play a wide variety of guitar styles.
Don Felder and Randy Meisner got hosed. Like so many bands after Eagles, the power holders got greedy and pushed the other partners out. KISS, Whitesnake, Ozzy, and a slew of others have famously (or infamously) pulled the same stuff. Sad.

You didn't annoy me, the opposite. Many fans still the band The Eagles, not Eagles as you state . I was complimenting you. I was criticising others who call them The Eagles.
I can't vouch 100% for the Steve Martin story, heard it many years ago from a renowned radio presenter here, in the UK.
@@robinpunter4377 No worries, I was like how could a “fun fact” be annoying haha! I always tell people it’s like the Titanic: It didn’t say “The Titanic” on the side, but it’s most often referred to that way
I have seen them many times. I think I am addicted!
Seen them in concert back in the day. Awesome sauce!! Was devastated when Glenn Frey died. As a group or solo, they are the best! ( One of)
Totally agree.
My favorite group although the reached their peak at Hotel California, they were never as good after that. Great to see live in concert! Take it to the limit was their best song, Randy was so underrated as a singer and was so shy he enjoyed just being in the background.
Meisner was special, they couldn't have done better after he left
I loved the way you did Jet Airliner and Fly Like An Eagle. 👍
It would be nice to mention that Don Felder is the author of Hotel California's music and guitar solo.
Perhaps this should be titled “What every Eagles fan already knows.”
My favorite Eagles song is also Glen Fry’s favorite Eagles song. One of these nights.
IMHO…..
I sure wish I would have gone seen their show when they were in St. Louis for the last time. Hotel California is one of my favorites ❤
I've been to Winslow. It's a cute tribute to the song. Great photo op.
I remember when I bought the Hotel California album, opened it up and saw that Joe Walsh was in the band. I was 13 years old and said to myself, “This is gonna kick ass !!”
Priceless memory
I was out near L.A DURING MY stay at camp Pendleton during the 70s. It was CRAZY.
Great book! I recommend it to every Eagles fan. Especially if you have seen the documentary.
Is it still in print. I prefer books to ebooks
my only issue with that book is that don felder wasnt innocent either. at the end of the day, sometimes everyone had their own valid reasons
I bought Common Thread. It’s a great tribute album. Thanks, Travis!
Don Felder rocks .
This was great. "Take It Easy" and "Peaceful Easy Feeling" were summer camp favorites at CYO back in the day.
Few bands published great songs after songs but these guys managed it .
I still think of Myrtle Beach listening to them back in the day.
The Eagles played the soundtrack to my youth!
Led Zeppelin was mine.
@Suzanne Beinart Mine, too-to the point that “I Can’t Tell You Why” always reminds of my brief, ill-advised first marriage.
Irving Azoff did not release eagles greatest hits. It was created and instigated by David Geffen of Asylum records
I love the EAGLES! And JOE WALSH especially.
I was lucky enough to see them in Ottawa (Ontario, Canada) when they were on the "Hell Freezes Over" Tour. Amazing. I'll never forget it.
"Take It Easy " My favorite road trip song 😊
I love the Eagles and I admit it! Biggest selling album of all time and great music. Funny thing is, I love The Big Lebowski too
2:02- So the Eagles were upset that Azoff releasing a greatest hits album without their permission was " a slick way to earn extra bucks."
Funny they didn't seem too upset when they denied Don Folder royalties from Hotel California even though he brought the song to the band.
Not to mention the fact they were world class dicks.
Without Felder , no Hotel California...
Without Hotel California what do you think Eagle would be?
they had dozens of other hits besides hotel california including take it easy take it to the limit lying eyes witchy woman one of these nights i cant tell you why desperado best of my love the long run heartache tonight i could go on but it might take a while no don felder did not make the eagles he was just a part of them and if felder was so good why did he not go on to be a solo artist after they broke up i seem to remember henley and frey having a few hits of their own without don
@@rubenlabay3615 still one of America's biggest bands 😆
@@johnsmith-ub7vr The song writers get more (or all) of the publishing..... not more of everything. They had a contract, Felder was - on paper - an equal member of the band. Frey and Henley (with the help of Azoff) were poaching more than their share of the profits from touring and record sales and merchandising. They were stealing from Felder (Schmidt and Walsh were contract members - they did not share in net profits, but were drawing salaries). Felder insisted on seeing the "books", they fired him. Like it or not, that's what happened.
Great video of a really awesome band !!! I was very fortunate to see them on the “Hell Freezes Over Tour”. I have also been to Winslow AZ a few times now… and yes…. The first time was very emotional !!!
Love the Eagles and long live their music !!!

The Eagles🦅💖🕺👬🧑🤝🧑🌟🤩

Bernie Leadon was hardly mentioned. He was a big part of their early sound.
Travis asked Don, then Glen to do this and they each wanted the other one to agree...he didn't tell them he talked to the other.
Funny, back in 93 I did exactly that, got out of my car in Winslow and stood on the corner just to say I did. Years later it's a tourist attraction.
My favorite band of all times
Anyone that has a free Bobby Knight t-shirt on is awesome. R.I.P. Glen just wishes you and Henley would have calmed the dictatorship down. Felder was Hotel California!
Amazingly talented group of musicians from the original members to the most recent ones. I just wish Don Henley would quit taking every video of Randy Meisner singing "Take It To The Limit" off of TH-cam as soon as someone uploads it. Like don't you sing "Get Over It"?
Henley is and has always been a prima Donna drama queen. He was always jealous of Meissner's voice.
I wish that there had been some more in-depth information about the members, but it was an excellent video!
The History of The Eagles Documentary goes a lot more in depth, definitely worth the watch!
Kinda forgot toention Don Felder, whom actually WTOTE hotel California with Joe Walsh.

I'm about to see them for the 3rd time. The Long Run is my favorite Eagles song. I can't wait to see Vince Gill in the band.
Vince is amazing with the Eagles
At the time Take it Easy was released, there was only one corner in Winslow.

sorry but Meisner & Bernie Leadons guitars were turned off by request of Frey & Henley at the 2008 rock & roll HALL OF fAME.. Leadon came back in 2013 & played with them. Meisner was physically unable but rFrey made it clear he no longer held any grudge.

Agreed. They ceased being the Eagles after Hotel California, IMO
yes in my opinion they were no longer the eagles after Don Felder was sacked over greed It just left a bad taste
They keep adding new members but will never be the same again all about making money now

Joe Walsh was already working as a solo artist before he joined the Eagles.
In two different bands
Eagles 🤘
All three of them, Desperado, Desperado and Desperado.
He really has everything - gorgeous tone, a great sense of melody and can play a wide variety of guitar styles.
i love the Eagles, but to sue someone who uses the name eagle that's just plain stupid
Especially when it is actually...um...an eagle 🤨.
Don Felder and Randy Meisner got hosed. Like so many bands after Eagles, the power holders got greedy and pushed the other partners out. KISS, Whitesnake, Ozzy, and a slew of others have famously (or infamously) pulled the same stuff. Sad.
