When I lived in Gainesville FL ...there was a music store called Lipham's Music and I would go there on a regular basis. There was a young man there that I use to talk to and he would give me brochures on the music equipment they sold. He could tell I didn't have a lot of money ...but he treated me like I was his best customer. I finally saved up enough money to buy a Kustom amp from Don. I still have the amp and the receipt. The salesman's name on the receipt is Don Felder ...the same Don in this interview :)
Thanks for Sharing!!!
Wow that's an amazing story! I could listen to stories like this all day.
From gville too. Liphams. Dad sold band equipment there. I hung with lipham sons. Hung with Stan Lynch at the beach. Knew the Jourards from Motels, Bennmont, etc etc
Your story is fabulous. Hoping you are still jamming out bro
What a wonderful story. It goes to show that Don Felder has always been a really decent, humble guy. Reading this made me smile. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome story
The Eagles were a highly accomplished band prior to Don Felder, but Don brought huge rock cred to the table with that guitar of his.
the eagles were basically a semi-boring country rock band until they exploded their reach with felder and joe walsh. as talented as fray and henley were they owe a lot to those two guys.
@racer111259 absolutely!!!!!
Love Bernie Leadon, Joe Walsh and Steuart Smith, but Don Felder is probably my favorite guitarist that played in the Eagles.
@@racer111259Exactly
Watching there documentary Glen and Don were pompous ego driven people who felt there solo careers made them bigger in the Eagles and wanted more money than the rest of the band,I didn’t care for the way Glenn Fry and Don Henley treated there band
They were just nasty talking bad about Felder Walsh,Randy Meisner in the bands documentary!
It takes massive ego’s and arrogance to handle there grievances in public the way they did.
Didn’t care about them after watching that documentary
Without Hotel California Eagles success would not be as high as they are.. Don Felder's guitar playing is and his phrases are timeless
The magic of Felder + Walsh put the Eagles into the stratosphere
Agreed!!!!
True.
Joe understood the eagles were Henley and Frey, Felder didn't
I’ve always adored FELDER.
Don & Glenn FOUNDED The Eagles. The Eagles is NOT U2. FELDER needed friends more than he needed band mates.
@@user-qr7ee2cp4ytrue what you say, but they had to bear in mind that don Felder created Hotel California which is worth half of the Frey and Henley’s work together
Always liked Don Felder and still do.
Agreed, and I read his book Heaven and Hell, my life in the Eagles 1974-2001, it was great to read!!!!
He is awesome especially as a gifted musician
Really impressed by the dignity and humility of Don
You have to be kidding Don and Glen were the two most arrogant members of the band thats a fact!
@@batphink2655 Don FELDER. Please try to keep up.
I can't imagine having to deal with Frye & Henley's massive greed and supercilious egos. I'm thankful to them for the music, but I have mosre respect for Felder.
It is disappointing how Don Felder was treated by the Eagles. I've lost some respect for the members who pushed him out.
Henley and Frey have always been unbelievable assholes, and now it's all coming out as to how the band always sounded so good live, because lots of it is fake. Those lying, cheating bastards.
The way Randy Meisner was was treated was just as shameful.
He said he had put his disputes with the band behind him, and expressed surprise by the anger still felt by Frey and Henley towards him, and said of the documentary: "Most of it was about Don and Glenn. But they controlled it, owned it, and paid for it, so they could do what they wanted. But it did take me back how angry they were and how much venom they still had toward me, especially Glenn."[
@@tomholman4991I wholeheartedly agree. Very sad and totally unnecessary.
Don Felder is a partner and forever will be paid by The Eagles. Great business move by Don. Unfortunately Randy didn’t sign correctly and his Eagle legacy will be forgotten even though he was the best vocalist and bassist for them.
Don Felder, Is a hero to me musically and as a person. He does a ton of behind the scenes especially to help kids. He got hosed by the greed and Uber egos of Henley, Asoff and the late Frey. I read his book and he lays it all out. He was CFO of Eagles Ltd and just wanted to see the books. The villans in the band set up a secret shell company to funnel the money away from him. Don is a class act and a master musician and should be revered as such. God bless you Don Felder.
You’re right about that!!!
Outstanding observations my friend. Don Felder appears to be a very self aware, well grounded, humble, happy, and extremely articulate man.
It’s a pleasure to hear him share his thoughts and music. I must read his book.
Eagles were Henley and Frey. Everyone else was expendable. Felder couldn't deal with that.
I agree with you. In my opinion, there is not a better guitar player in the world. It's too bad that they all forgot that it was a band, and they became "Eagles Inc"
Yes, this all came out in the court case...Felder won. (I say won, they settled out of court...but it was obvious who the judge in the case was going to side for, and it wasn't Frey and Henley) Frey and Henley were taking money out of the till, and Henley was on to it. That's why they canned him...despite what they said.
He is one incredible guitarist, I have seen him with the Eagles and as a soloist! Keep rocking Don, you are definitely one of the best!!!!!
Not only a great guitarist, but also a great mandolin and peddle steel player.
Not only does he seem really cool, and down to earth, but he is so articulate and so sure of himself, with such an inner strength! Not to mention, one fine musician
Agreed on that!!!!
A large bank account helps.
Don is still touring, and sounding phenomenal. I like the original lineup. Hate all the drama. Also ,Dan Rather is 91,and still nails it.
91?!! omg. that's absolutely incredible.
Agree and agree. And I miss having Dan Rather as a newscaster, he never seemed pressured to hide truths.
One of his first gigs was in Texas, 1963. He reported on the Kennedy assassination. He's been around a looooong time.
The press could learn from him: ask a simple, direct question, let the person being interviewed speak and then ask the clinching follow-up question: ‘Who are you?” Well-done.
Great comment! Agree with all
The way he was treated by Henley & Frey is disgusting. Kennedy Center Honors a few years ago… Leadon and Meissner were there but the egomaniacs prevented him from attending. Through it all Don has remained so classy.
I saw an interview where Frey was talking about Felder saying something to the effect that he had his attorney call Felder's attorney to say you tell that ungrateful ahole (Felder) that if he doesn't accept the terms of the contract he's out. That changed my opinion of Frey as a person. RIP to Frey - but I'm with Don Felder on this one. Level headed guy that stays above the frey (so to speak) and does not bash his former mates.
@@walterengelke1887You’re right about that, and I do have a copy of Don Felder’s Book Heaven and Hell, My Life In The Eagles 1974-2001, it’s really good to read!!!
@@walterengelke1887I agree with you. My opinion of Frey went south after seeing that interview as well.
I was rubbed the wrong way that he wasn’t included. I didn’t realize how much of a big hand he had in their sound and the contribution of hotel california. I can’t look at glenn frey the same ever again or don henley
He is highly tactful and articulate@@walterengelke1887
Still underrated as a lead guitarist. Don’s solos always served the song without being overly flashy. We can hum along to them as an instrumental melody within the song. Tasteful.
He's not underrated! He's rightly rated extremely highly
Exactly. He never took over his guitar, he respected it and let its sound / music capture the atmosphere, he was just the man behind the instrument. Pure class.
Underrated by who?
@@petersneddon1579 Unfortunately, pretty much any poll of “best of”.
Underrated and underappreciated don't mean the same thing.
Don was good enough to record with Steely Dan. That tells you how polished a guitarist he is.
what's interesting is Frey and Henley I believe were inspired by Becker and Fagan
We didn’t need that to know that. We already knew that.
🤔
Very humble , very honest , very true … ❤
Agreed!!!
Narcissist’s always present themselves as nice and as a victim.
Felder is very modest. One hell of a guitarist. Yes, when he joined for their third album the Eagles took off. He is an integral part of their success. Listen, the simple guitar work at the end of 'I can't tell you why' is masterful.
No kidding.
I love Timothy B Schmidt's voice, but that guitar fade out is the icing on the cake and was the very best part of it.
It used to infuriate me when DJs would talk over it.
Although the original "I can't tell you why" videoclip showed Don Felder "playing" the solos, the actual studio recording was done by Glenn Frey. IIRC Don Felder played those solos on live shows.
Glenn Frey plays lead guitar on I Can’t Tell You Why, not Don Felder.
Indeed it is , without doubt
Always thought don Felder was better than the rest of the Eagles, lovely man enormous talent.
I think you thought wrong. He was a great guitar player, but nothing special outside of that. Ask his ex-wife.

"Fingers Felder" gets my standing ovation. He was a key element in the late 1970s "high-flying" performances. I attended 2 Eagles shows; both were terrific! Their tunes endure! * Peace and Love, Cav. *
I saw The Eagles in the summer of 75 when I was just 17 in NJ at Roosevelt Stadium. Seals and Croft and Poco warmed up, and I gotta say the Eagles absolutely killed it that night with Don Felder. Encore Joe Walsh came out and played Rocky Mountain Way with the boys. Center stage 20 ft. away, the show that really blew me away with the talent of these great bands! 🎸🎶🎵🎶❤️

hands down one of the most talented and stand-up musicians in the eagles.
Maybe, but he didn't sing. Joe Walsh was probably just as good and was also a star singer.
Felder has always been complimentary of the others contributions to the Eagles success… Even to Henley and Frey through all the drama. So sad that egos and money come between people who share an obvious connection and who accomplished so much together.
As great as the Eagles were, I often wonder how much greater they could of been without Henley.A liberal bastard who caused 80% of all the problems the Eagles ever had. A good manager could have helped. They had no sideline leadership,,,,,it was complete chaos.
This is such a concise yet really great interview that in a few minutes really explains The Eagles and Don as a man beautifully.
Don Felder is a class act. I liked everything about the Eagles except for the in fighting which seems to happen with a lot of bands and also personal friendships. Don, please keep blessing the world with your God given talent. You have so much to give.

He's always been a whiner. But he could play as well as anyone.
I've recently seen Don's solo show twice in a year..I'll go to my grave being a fan of His and hope to see him a lot more times

One of the hallmarks of the 1970's for me is the guitar solo on One of these Nights! I can remember just waiting for it to come with great anticipation as I was listening to the song. And that was at 5 or 6 years old only! What a great guitarist!
I love Don Felder….and I’m on his side. They thought he couldn’t sing and wouldn’t let him but obviously they were stupid. Love his solo albums and he puts on a great concert. Bravo Don!
Every member of the Eagles is super talented, that's the blessing and the curse. I have to say the song Heavy Metal by Don Felder has been a staple on my playlists for decades. As a kid it was a favorite as well. S tier song!

A phenomenal musician - the guy has talent to spare -- glad he is a solo act now. He doesn't have to deal with dictator egos. Do your thing , Don, you're in a MUCH better place now 🎸👋🙋🙌
Don's interview on Stern from 2008 opened my eyes further to how brilliant and down to earth he was. Then, when I saw "The History of The Eagles", it was so painful and I could not get through it. It should have been called "The History of Henley and Frey". Now, I have some difficulty getting through an Eagles song when I hear it. I believe Don completely and he deserved better. Thank you Mr. Rather.
😂😂😂😂😂
His kindness, easy going nature and ability to be forgiving are undeniable. There are two sides to every story and each side has their version of what happened. That being said, actions speak louder than words and Don Felder has shown time and again who he is as a person…..through many examples of charity and kindness.
you're a bot.
Growing up in the ‘70s I was a big Eagles fan especially during when Meisner, and Felder were in the band. I heard a bit of the band’s mess back then but pretty much ignored it or avoided listening to all their troubles. Mostly because even though now I know how jerks were Frey and Henley, I basically considered both the powerhouse of the Eagles, along with Randy Meisner. What I could say for Don Felder is that if not for him there will be no song and album titled “Hotel California”. It was sure a musical gift when he came up with the beginning guitar intro to that song in his home in Malibu.
I think it's telling that The Eagles as they are now didn't put out any studio recordings since Long Road Out of Eden and also telling that they never put out a Video/DVD/Blu-Ray of their "History" Tour with Bernie guest appearing and that Azoff and or Henley seem to go back to the Classic Eagles Line-up of Henley/Frey/Meisner/Felder/Walsh when they do release any video or need to make extra money from their music. Really all they are now is just a Greatest Hits Band nothing more. The only classy thing Henley has done recently was to acknowledge Randy as a band member when he passed away and have Vince Gill sing Take It To The Limit in tribute to him and also mention Randy's passing in a statement. Frey would have never allowed that to happen.
Credit to Henley for respecting Randy's legacy that way but Frey possibly wpuodnt go that far to honor Randy? Is he still fuming over that one time Meisner couldnt sing Take It To The Limit because he had a cold?
Great interview. I respect Don Felder and enjoyed his contributions to the Eagles. I appreciate his talent, his giving and charitable acts. I think he’s in a good place with himself and has much to be proud of. His musical accomplishments speak for themselves
One of very best guitarists of the genre. His talent has always been underrated. That said, it isn’t like he’s a starving musician. It’s great that he’s been successful enough to make his own decisions, without regret for how much better it MIGHT have been.
I wish he could share a little bit with me. He seems like a down to earth and a nice guy. He seems to have found peace from within. Which is really should be the ultimate goal for all of us.
It's NOT the Eagles anymore without Don Felder, I won't pay to see them in concert with the current line-up.
Hiring Vince Gill to sing Eagles songs was the most bizarre choice.
The band is basically an Eagles cover band. Don Henley and Joe Walsh are the only "original" members left. And Joe wasn't a member, the is and was a paid sideman.
Excellent analysis and spot on insight. They should be called Don Henley and the Yes-men.
We saw Don play /sing great Eagles music at a Nascar race in February this year 2023! This man can play a great guitar
This guy is a class act. Henley and Frey were ego maniacs. The others knew it, too, but remained silent.
In all the years/decades Walsh & the current bass player have been in the Eagles. They have never been full fledged members.
They are viewed as hired hands aka employees. Most people do not know that.
You are right though. They have indeed remained silent.
I mean I'm sure they are not hurting money wise but still. Besides being control freaks & ego maniacs both Frey & Henley have been beyond greedy.
Sadly all that money didn't help Frey @ the end of his life.
@@roninnotasheeplikeyou.2631The “current bass player” has been a member for nearly 50 years. Timothy Schmit is a great artist.
Are you forgetting about original bassist Randy Meissner? Best vocalist in any Eagles lineup. He quit the Eagles in 1977 due to Glen Fret being an egomaniac.@@2v_5r84
I often wonder how being handled like that has affected Walsh over the years. The old Joe didn't seem like a guy who could live with being treated like a child. I guess we'll never know because as long as those Eagles checks keep coming, he'll do as he's told.

I hate that this kind of thing happens with bands but he seems good.hope you keep doing well Don! I've seen the Eagles with Don playing and other people playing in his place.
He seemed to struggle for a few years afterwards, but his life and career are doing great now. Saw him solo in 2018 and it was great!
Great heart. Thanks for your generosity, Mr. Felder.
He is so completely under appreciated as one of the core reasons the Eagles were what they were. Love the guy's playing and his attitude.
Glad your keen eye re-discovered this forgotten and underappreciated talent.
One of my BIGGEST Influences in Music. This is a great piece. God bless both these men
The way I see it is once they got famous and were having hits Don and Glenn decided that they would more or less decide things with little to no input from the others.
I find it rich that Frey says he and Henley were keeping the Eagles name and music alive through their solo careers . I was a child on the 80’s and I can’t tell you how many times I heard their music on the classic country or rock music stations.
I think it’s quite telling when Frey admitted he’d only reunite for a bigger cut than the others ( excluding Don H).
In my opinion why have contracts if you you don’t want to honour them or why make Felder the CFO if he wasn’t allowed access to the financial records etc.
Plus when Henley went off about Felder’s book yet agreed to a documentary that more or less confirmed all he said in the book.
Joe and Timothy should have stood up for themselves and demanded to be treated as members of the band and not simply hired hands and also keep the money the same as before.
If Felder lied in his book why didn’t they sue dnd if he was in the wrong why did they settle the lawsuit and pay him out?
It’s the same with Lindsey Buckingham. Irving had him fired per Stevie’s request and they had to pay him out despite their comments to the press that the band would vigorously defend his lawsuit.
The Eagles are a joke now. They have one of the best guitarists and vocalists with Vince Gill and instead of making new music they are simply doing a stale hits show at sky high prices which is hilarious considering how much Henley bitched about the corporate greed in the world.
Funnily enough, they added Glenn's son Deacon to fill the space Glenn left but similar to Wolfgang, i dont consider either of them Eagles or a Van Halen member.
I dont see Eagles anymore. If i care, my mind reminds me its Don Henley's Eagles im seeing.
Easy on the Texan there. He writes as an observer, not a participant.
Simply put Henley & Frey wrote & sang nearly all the hits & as such deserve a much larger cut. Guitar players are a dime a dozen.
"I find it rich that Frey says he and Henley were keeping the Eagles name and music alive through their solo careers." In the absence of their solo careers, there would have been little demand for The Eagles to return as a band. Their solo careers were 2 of the best of the era, and that kept Eagles songs on the radio.

Sorry to burst your bubble but you need to slow down and review the song writing credits on each Eagles album. You will find that there's quite a few other people who wrote the songs other than Henley and Frey.
Since that's the case, are the Eagles a cover band?
I don’t think Felder gets enough credit for why The Eagles we’re as successful as they were! His guitar was a big part of why the Eagles sound was so good!

Don is one of the best guitar players and songwriters of our time yet he's humble and appreciative. I've seen him live a few times and he's truly gracious to his fans. I love the Eagles but Glenn (RIP) and Don Henley could learn something from Felder about appreciating your fans and being humble.
What are all his hit songs? Want me to name you Don Henley's hit songs in the Eagles and solo?
@@johnkneeland5547 I love the Eagles and all the members from inception through The Long Run. I always have and always will. I'm not diminishing Don Henley's talent or success. That's undeniable and I'm a big fan of his. I don't like the way Glenn and Don (Henley) snubbed Felder and are standoffish with fans. I believe a band can be much like a recipe. If you have all the right ingredients, you maximize the output. If you leave any out, the result is not as good as it could be. Felder was a key contributor during the period of the Eagles best work, in fact he came up with the iconic Hotel California melody, chord progression and solo. I've met Felder and he talks to you like a neighbor or friend. I respect that. Furthermore, Henley had help with his big hits. Mike Campbell helped with Heart of the Matter and Boys of Summer. Danny Kortchmar helped write New York Minute and Dirty Laundry. As much as I love Henley's music, he alone didn't cause the Eagles success or his own.
The way he speaks so highly of Glenn and Don despite the way they kinda screwed him over is very telling of his humble character. I still think the very best Eagles lineup was the original 4, but Don Felder is an absolute class act
I feel lucky to have seen Don, who played in my small hometown, about a year and a half ago. Put on a GREAT show. His vocals were much better than I expected and he can really "shred" those guitars. He really seemed happy, talked and took pictures with many in the front rows. The new "Eagles" are just a Tribute Band, albeit a very EXPENSIVE tribute band without Don IMO.
Not normally a Dan Rather fan...but he did a good job staying out of the way in this interview.
Agreed!!!!
