Ive been very critical of this season, and Id say this is my second favourite episode, after Rooks Rest. The staff should be proud of themselves.
I 💯 agree. People forget that it’s meant to be a drama series, not an action show. Some of my favourite scenes this whole season were the ones where it’s just two characters onscreen talking (or arguing, or whatever) with those long lengths of dialogue where the actors can really shine like a Shakespeare soliloquy - of which there are a few standouts in this ep alone: Aemond and Alicent in the council room, Larys describing a cripple’s life to Aegon, and Daemon pleading with Alys for help.
"And the napalm engulfed them, and we could see them dancing in the fire. And as soon as that that napalm died down and we could run out into that smoldering grass, we did. And a man loomed up in the smoke, and he said, get this man by his feet. And I reached, and I caught his ankles. And when I did, the nylon of the the combat boots crumbled in my hands and the flesh came off... And this affects you... you can't be a detached observer in those circumstances." Joseph L Galloway describing the effects of napalm in the Battle of Ia Drang (watch We Were Soldiers for 1% of that horror). Every time they do a dragonfire scene, I think of that quote, but especially this scene. Harrowing stuff.
Solid episode, people aren't ready for the end of s2. Not too sure why everyone is hating on this season and getting angry when there isn't a huge battle in every episode, imagine early seasons of got being released now and getting dunked on for being too boring "because nothing happened"
I am very disappointed. Two years wait for a season like this, and a two year wait after if I want to continue the story. This was the wrong choice of pace for eight episodes, none of which are much longer than an hour, as people have pointed out to me. And I think it's disingenuous of you to imply that's because there's no battles. Season 1 had one big battle (Stepstones) and one dragon "fight" if you could call it that. I loved it regardless. The story has stagnated, not the dragons and battles. They waste way too many minutes on close ups of characters staring at literal motes of dust.
It’s not about action. It’s about engagement. That’s why people are complaining about pacing. Daemon has been tripping balls for three episodes now. Rhaenyra is still bemoaning her time at Dragonstone, multiple small council meetings with no actual change, so much dithering with no forward momentum.
The issue isn't that there aren't a lot of battles, the issue is Daemon's storyline is completely boring and reeks of padding. None of the characters he meets are all that interesting and his dream sequences feel like a waste of time simply because they aren't moving any plot point forward. If his scenes had him having any semblance of a decent conversation in them then that would be one thing, but I personally can't remember a single conversation he's had with anyone because no one really has anything interesting to say this season. GoT had some of the best conversations in television; Ned and Robert in the field, Robert and Cersei in episode 5, Littlefinger and Varys always trying to one-up each other, etc. Season two of HotD literally has NOTHING even close to those great conversations. And that's just ONE aspect of season two's downfalls. Pretty much none of the characters feel like they're getting much character development. Aegon had some pretty great scenes in the first two episodes and it's interesting seeing Aemond in a place of power now, but pretty much everyone else feels stalled, like the writers didn't know what to do with them. Alicent and Cole are definitely the worst written characters this season so far. Alicent's rational for why she believes she deserves power makes absolutely no sense given the context of her situation and Cole is such a gigantic narcissistic moron that it's hilarious the writers think it's believable that he could win any battles. Lol In order to win battles you need to be able to think in broad long term strokes, but Cole is so short-sighted and dim-witted that he couldn't realistically win a battle even if he had cheat codes. 😂

The reason episode 4 payed off so well was the 3 episodes leading to it. I only expect one more big event in the final episode, the next episode will also lead to the final.
I couldn't care less if there were battles or not as long as the scenes I'm watching are engaging and thought provoking. I feel like this season has too much unimportant filler with no character development happening. Daemon's dreams were interesting the first couple of times, but now they are getting stale. Yes, we get it, he is battling his inner-demons, but literally nothing else is happening. Daemon went from one of the most interesting characters to watch last season to an absolute bore this one. Tell me one meaningful action Daemon has taken outside of going to Harrenhall in the first place? Chopping wood? There are also multiple logical inconsistencies. How are the Blacks getting food into King's Landing if the gates are sealed off by Aemond? Why did Rhaenyra choose Seasmoke of all of the dragons, when she knows that Laenor is still alive- making it extremely unlikely for that dragon to willingly start a new bond. After all we are told that the bond lasts for life and that a dragon will refuse another rider as long as their old is alive. It is also hinted at in the books that the dragons know instinctively if their riders are alive or not. So Seasmoke should not want a new rider. And Rhaenyra should know this, given that she planned for Laenor to be alive, right? The books doesn't have this problem as Laenor is fairly certainly dead there. But the show doesn't want Rhaenyra to look bad- so they decided to make changes. Also for the life of me I can't understand why she has so much trust in the White Worm given her previous affiliations in King's Landing, but one sob-story in and she wants to bed her even though she is still legally married to Daemon. Not that she gives a shit about convention or Daemon at this point- but it makes no sense that she would risk her reputation to have a fling with some commoner- when her legitimacy and image matters more than ever.
