Exploring Underwater with a Head Tracking FPV Camera

  • We all know that FPV is a lot of fun in the air with quadcopters and fixed wings, but what about from underneath a boat looking below the water? And what if you could immerse yourself in that underwater world and control the camera with your head? That’s what I wanted to find out, so I dusted off my big 3D printed catamaran RC boat (link to files below) and set about adding a head tracking, first person view camera system all housed in a waterproof dome with its own dedicated lighting system.
I used a combination of 3D printing and acrylic to build the dome housing and LED lights to light things up (link to files below). Everything was waterproofed using a combination of hot glue, silicone sealant and polyester resin. The 3 axis pan and tilt mechanism is a cheap off the shelf unit that uses micro servos that provides about 180 degrees of rotation. An analogue FPV camera is used to provide the live video feed back to goggles and an Insta360 Go 2 provides the HD video recording. These are both mounted on a custom 3D printed mount that attaches to the pan and tilt mechanism (link to files below). Head tracking is done via an Arduino Nano BLE 33 running dlktdr’s HeadTracker firmware (link below) housed in a small 3D printed case (link to files below). This is all wired in to a radio control receiver and transmitter - I ran out of channels on the boat, so there are now two dedicated radio systems to control the boat and operate the FPV. Needless to say, it’s getting a little bit complicated to film all the action at the same time solo!
Small parts were printed on a Creality Ender 3 Pro using 3D Fillies PLA+ filament with a 0.4 mm nozzle and 0.2 mm layer height. Large parts were printed on a Creality CR-10 in 3D Fillies PLA+ filament with a 0.6 mm nozzle and 0.36 mm layer height. Specific print settings are listed in the model links below. CAD design was done in Fusion 360. Shot on Canon EOS M50, Insta360 One R, Insta360 Go 2 and DJI Mini.

This rig is made perfect for the omeo shipwreck! About 20 min drive south of Fremantle, and just a few meters from shore, the wreck sits below the surface lying on bleach-white sand, in crystal clear water. Awesome design and great video mate.

protip for future lightbar builds either fill the bar with a clear acrylic or use a quick fill cartridge from a bike to purge the air from the tube to remove any moisture preventing internal condensation entirely, do this with any viewing volume you can to prevent fogging from ever happening

Also remember that some resins are sensitive to UV and decompose, turning yellow. Also resin shrinks a bit when curing, so don't seal the ends until after the resin has cured.

It might be neat to find some fishing lures for specific fish in an area remove the hooks and see if you can catch a fish taking the bait. If fish are spooked by the boat paint the bottom of it light blue and fit a bigger prop that you spin slower to make less noise. I think this is an awesome project looking forward to whats next.

You can easily make a dome from acrylic. Make a small table and cover it with felt. Make a hole in the middle and attach a compressor hose on the bottom. Make a plywood ring. Put a piece of acrylic in the oven until it is flexible. Lay it on the table and clamp the ring down over it. Add compressed air and the dome will form perfectly symmetrical.

To improve your projects, STOP using silastic sealant. Your dome base for example. Include a small channel in the dome base, smaller diameter than the screws. Put a rubber O-Ring in the channel and tighten down dome. Hope you get the idea. You can repeat this in a lot of places you use silastic. More effective, easily discountable, no mess & professional looking build.

Nice work, very clear video. You didn't catch the watch in the weeds at 8:18.

Can't believe I've only just found your channel. Great to see content coming from my close to my home town, Bright. If you need a hand with any Drone or FPV stuff, hit me up.

First time seeing something like this, gave me some ideas for future projects (which I did not need lol). Anyway, very cool project, great video and brilliant commentary. Crazy you dont have more subs tbh.

Thanks! I really enjoyed making this one - it's nice when my projects get me out of my workshop. I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I'm at the pointy end of another passion project like this one right now. I can't wait to share it soon!

This might be a bit too insane, but an FPV mounted spherical dome on a cable, deployable from the boat so that you can look around in much deeper water.
