It benefits everyone to allow all opinions to be spoken. If the person in the wrong has a chance to voice their opinion, this allows for the truth to also come forward naturally. This includes hate speech. If only one side is allowed to speak, the alternate opinions cannot help the argument. The single side can be taken too far until it is no longer in fact the truth, as the other side cannot be considered and factored in. Reality is based in syntax and perception. Reality is incredibly easy to manipulate in this way.

The *marketplace of ideas* is an economic term that determines how ideas and ideologies will thrive according to their superiority or inferiority and widespread acceptance among the population.

He did what a lot of victims of abuse do and made jokes about it, casualizing it. +Abby Gray there was also a second incident when he talked about a hollywood party with younger boys at it and he didnt name names. Personally I side with him on this as well. I lived most my life in well not so nice areas and I know full well the danger of making yourself a target which would happen if he did call people out, especially the type of people he would have been calling out. Not just that, but a lot of times the naming names thing isnt going to do shit or bring about any sort of 'holy justice' like some people think. And it will always paint a bullseye on your back. On top of that you need solid evidence to back up claims and if you don't people won't believe you. And if you were to go out white knighting getting evidence can be risky. And once more on top of that if you have any plans to get places in life you sometimes have to wallow through the shit because if you don't the people producing that shit are gonna stop you from getting anywhere.
I have to disagree with you a bit here: The 1st amendment does NOT protect speech. It protects expression. There is a difference. Speech can be slander, defamation, libel, encouragement of crime, etc. These things are NOT protected. What is protected are IDEAS. Any idea, no matter how offensive, is allowable and protected by the 1st amendment.

I'm a little confused. The 1st amendment states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech..." so how is speech not directly protected?
Zeeke: The speech that is protected is ideas and opinion. You need to remember that back in the day of the 1st amendment there was no concept of trolling. Also, even back then they acknowledged that speech that caused measurable damages could result in lawsuit. Measurable damages can be physical or financial. Emotions are not measurable so you can't claim damages for speech that 'harms' emotions.

I agree with 90% of what you have to say about free speech. However, during these types of discussions about free speech and college, I hate when people say education is about "an exchange of ideas". It's not. It can happen in college but it's not what college or education is about. Education is about gaining knowledge of particular subjects in order to get a career in a particular field related to those topics. If you're going to college primarily to "exchange ideas/debate" with other people rather than trying to learn the necessary knowledge to gain a good career then you're doing it wrong.
I believe universities are supposed to include critical thinking and debate, hence exchange of ideas in addition to knowledge. If a university doesn't teach critical thinking and exchange of ideas, they are only doing 1/2 of the purpose of higher education.

I have to say, I too was only teached one side of everything growing up.
Though, during my teenage years, I started thinking about stuff, questioning everything I've been taught, both from my parents, teachers, friends, you name it.
It took time before I actually started actually discussing with people.
You Rep, are one of the reasons why I've actually started voicing my opinion when it comes to certain topics, why I want to start a discussion when I see someone having another viewpoint or belief of something, so I can learn, and hopefully get some of my points through to the other person.

I've always loved Hitch's example of the two-party rights of free speech. It isn't just the right of the speaker, it is the right of everyone else who wants to hear it. When you take away people's ability to listen to a person like Milo, you are breaching their rights to free speech as well.
Freedom of speech gives you the right to say what you want without being punished by the government. It does not give you the right to a platform or protect you from backlash or consequences.
