I get compliments all the time on the looks. I was pumping gas yesterday and a man walked around it and said it was the best looking truck he had ever seen. If the reliability is there like the previous generation Toyota has something that will sell millions.

Growing up I worked as a manufacturing engineer building the NASA spacesuit. Circa 1983. Shuttle hey day period in time. As engineers we tested every possible scenario and that includes the scenarios that realistically are never going to happen. The computer guts / brain / control center of the suit was the DCM - display and controls module. All of that was hardwired circuitry. Later we put surface mount programmable chips on the boards and improved missions parameters. That was mid 80’s. About 35 years ago. Now everything is software driven and SHOULD WORK!!! Engineers today obviously are not as diligent at pressure testing every feature. Plus they probably work the software in a vacuum while the rest of the truck is in design. It’s like they missed SYSTEM TESTING when you finally bolt everything together. Toyota’s reputation is on the line with this truck. They got rid of the bulletproof V8 and that old truck had few bells and whistles. A simpler truck. Which probably helped it earn its ultimate reliability reputation. We will see on this new version. After seeing what Tim posted here and after hearing from others I’m not buying one of these Tundras in their first couple years of production. I don’t want to be the system test engineer reporting problems they should have already done test scripts on. No thank you. Toyota. DO YOUR JOB! You are charging nearly $10k more for this truck. At least match the old truck for reliability. Again. Your reputation is on the line here.

I agree, the so called "reliability claim to fame" is wearing thin when everything else suffers. I have a 2020 lexus fully loaded and the remote start and locks is awful. You may as well get in and start it. And the app only works when it wants to, it constantly gives me errors and times out. The fact that cars/trucks are being finance for 7+ years is beyond ridiculous hence it’s another type of subscription as these people almost never own those vehicles. Everything is subscribed to these days…. cars, tv, radio, computer software, phones…. everything. We’re going down the slippery slope

Ford makes the best pickup you can buy, hands down. They're the only manufacturer that makes their own engine, trans, and axle. I don't like Ford as a whole and prefer Toyota for most other things but Ford is light years ahead of the other manufacturers when it comes to pickups. Ram is the next closest thing and their outsourced, non-allison transmissions are a mess. Even with diesel and an allison they are clunky. For midsize I'd consider Tacoma, but the rest of the fullsize pickup market is well outside of Toyota's current offerings and capability.

Great real-world review. I feel differently about my cabin lights because I've had cars that I thought were way too bright so I usually turn them off, but I understand your frustration. Also, I have had remote start for years and it has its place. During the winter I use it to warm the inside and melt frost 10 mins or so before I enter and sometimes during the summer to cool the car down. Since I am away from the vehicle and distracted, its good for security knowing it'll shut off if someone tries to steal it. Otherwise, we have just generally become spoiled by technology because it does not take a second to jump in and press a button!
Automakers really don't even recommend running the car at idle for more than a few minutes. You get much more efficiency by just getting in and driving away. That heats/cools the car much quicker.

Thanks for the review. As someone who lives in the cold northern climate. The issues you discussed are reason enough I would not buy this truck. For roughly half the year I depend on my remote start and heated steering wheel. Not having an actual heated wheel that I paid for is a big nope. Having to pay for subscription service to use the remote start I've already paid for is a big nope! And then the truck stopping when you unlock it, all the excessive double starting of the vehicle! WTF. Then all the connection issues you're having with the UI and your phone would drive me nuts everyday! Appreciate your honest review and showing real world issues that people would have if they bought the vehicle, wish all auto tubers would do this. I plan on keeping my current truck for at least the next 2 years, but if Toyota doesn't correct the issues you just mentioned I honestly won't even consider them as an option... which is said because I like their products.

Aftermarket remote starter is the way to go. I'm from Canada. Got that installed on my 2020 corolla LE and it works great. The remote works like my switchblade key and when unlocking the trunk it unlocks all doors at the same time. My starter runs for 15 minutes before the engine shut off and only turns off if I forget to put the key in the ignition. Best investment for $425 Canadian with taxes included or roughly just over $300 American dollars. Got the 2 remote for 2 key fobs.

I have a 2018 Tacoma. I'm a long-time Android user, but recently made the switch to iPhone. Come to find out iPhones and Toyotas haven't worked together for YEARS! I constantly drop calls while driving. When I do it loses connection with my phone completely and I literally have to turn off my iPhone Bluetooth, then turn it back on. Then only sometimes it will connect back. This is not just annoying. Its dangerous. I just use my speakerphone now. I never had this problem with my old Android. Its amazing these two enormous companies can't figure out how to make their products work together.

The first thing they ask is what kinda janky remote start system did I put on it. Another thing that is dumb is that you can not lock the doors with the key fob or remote app if your truck is running. You have to kill the truck lock it and then remote start it. You look like a goon setting in the parking lot getting all this done.

The whole idea of remote start makes zero sense. You don’t need to warm up modern vehicles. The AC comes on quickly. You don’t need or want much heat in the winter because you have a coat on. Heated seats aren’t needed if you get the more comfortable fabric seats. Heated steering wheels are another gimmick. In the winter if a car is parked outside it is warm already from the greenhouse effect.

    2 Things:
    1. The remote start thing, you can remote start on the key fob. You have to hit the lock button 3 times and on the 3rd time hold it down until the truck lights up. I realize that the truck turning off when you unlock it is weird, I was informed by a Toyota tech that they do this on purpose, as the key fob and Toyota app only give enough information to the truck's ECU to start it. It is done for security purposes but I think its kinda dumb. You'll see that it only stays running for 10 minutes as well, again, kinda dumb.
    2. The heated steering wheel: you probably have a defect. I test drove a limited today in Ontario, Canada and it works amazing. It was approx 35 degrees and my hands were toasty warm, I actually turned it off because it was so hot. It was heated the whole steering wheel, top, bottom sides, everything, so I think yours has a problem with it.

But the new Chevy Trail Boss the front scoops located by the front bumper on either side did not like the look at first but now I think the truck looks amazing with the front scoops just took some time to grow on me. The front of this trucks grill i think is big looking for the truck but the inside is really nice. The biggest problem with all the trucks besides all the different names that make for these trucks but the price tag has gotten out of control. $50k low end but $70k --$90k is the New Normal which is insane. nice video and very fair review! my question is Toyota you've been working on this truck for years and you can't get the software right out of the gate? and those interior lights? come on man were talking $20 worth of led's and no thanks for the panno roof. that thing is going to make that truck with black interior an oven in this FL heat. guess I'll be keeping my 2018 1794 Edition for a long time and I've owned nothing but Toyota's for the past 45 years. good luck to all the suckers who are paying MSRP and above. can you say upside down?

Great video! I couldn't care less about the infotainment system since it supports WIRELESS CARPLAY. However, wireless CarPlay is essentially connecting as a wifi hotspot. So that plus spotty signal plus constant GPS plus background streaming can guarantee you draining > charging speed. Most auto wireless charging solutions are 7.5 watt QI standard. It won't keep up with the discharging rate period. So long distance traveling, a wire connection is still 100% necessary (USB-C allows fast charging speed which is even better). For local or short-distance travel, wireless CarPlay and wireless charging is still a killer combo for convenience.

I have a 2019 Tundra, SR5, 4.8. Nothing special and not all the bells & whistles. Great truck, and I use it too. Hunting, fishing, road trips, hauling stuff from furniture to firewood. It’s not a driveway ornament. A big plus is a real key start instead of a push button and none of that engine shutting off crap at stops. I’m not a fan of a lot of paint up front around the grill or painted bumpers. So for me, the new truck looks like hell. I hope they change up some things in future years.

Odd issues… Not sure if I would really call those first year issues- they’re so obvious they should have been caught in development. Seems somewhat half baked, which is crazy when you consider how long they took to develop this truck!
And the fact that the ONLY way to get remote start is by paying a subscription is bs. Have to give kudos to Ford for not charging ever for those services through their app ( and for putting it on the fob as well).
Hoping these issues will be quickly sorted through ota updates.

Do you know why Tundras shut off when they are unlocked? My F150 stays on, but you still have to tap the breaks and hit the start button to put it in gear. @@SignalCorps1 The issue is that it causes unnecessary wear and tear on the start system. I live in a part of the world where remote start is used multiple times a day for six months or so of every year. That's alot of wasted starts.

Thanks for the detailed review! I’m frustrated for you that you had all these issues after Toyota made us wait so long for a new one. I remember my 2012 wouldn’t let me connect my phone (or any phone) unless I was pulled over. It was maddening. These kinds of issues are mistakes Toyota shouldn’t be making when they take so long to make new rigs. You could easily add more interior lighting to the doors, center console, under the seat, etc. and/or just use brighter lights. I have a keychain flashlight the size of a AAA battery that lights up my whole backyard… and a luke-warm heated steering wheel is unacceptable. I don’t know why they don’t make settings for it like the seats, like low, medium, & high heat.

@@bradcreamer9744 I had big hopes with all the hype they put into an American engineer from Texas being in charge of the next Tundra. I was also hoping with all their experience with hybrids that the hybrid was going to be more impressive. Lexus seemed to have some influence on some of the Toyota car designs and I was hoping that was gonna make it's way to the Tundra. I love the new Camry's but I'm already looking forward to the refresh of the Tundra. Heres to hoping they pull out some big stops with it in the near future because IMO they absolutely need to do more to compete with the big 3, Tesla, & Rivian. What would the mileage have been in the V8? V6 engine’s have always had a reputation for not getting great mileage. Especially when you compare a mid size V6 to a full size V8.
Pull down on your email program on your phone then let it go and it will update. It forces an update right away. On an iPhone that is.
Also reboot your phone once and a while. And it has to be a complete shutdown and restart. Looks like there is going to be some updates coming from Toyota. Hope it can do over the air updates…
