SAVE YOUR AIR COMPRESSOR! Install an Electric Automatic Drain Valve!

  • I installed an automatic electric drain valve on my air compressor so I wouldn't have to bend down and drain the water from the air compressor ever again. Not draining your air compressor can cause excessive water to build up in the tank and cause all sorts of problems. It's not good for your air tools and can cause failure of the tank due to rusting.
Face it, manually draining the tank is a pain in the butt and you probably don't do it as often as you should. This will automate the process of having to manually drain the tank and keep it purged of water buildup.
The entire process took about 45 minutes from start to finish and was was under $50 for everything. Check out the video of me getting mine installed and see the initial testing of it once it was completed. I'll post a follow up video after some time to "fill" you guys in on how well it's been working so be sure to subscribe to the channel and hit the notification bell to be notified when I post it.
Here are the products used in this video if you are interested.

The pex adapters, elbow and cap came from the orange big box store.

Nice install, dude. Wanted on of those but for the life of me couldn't figure out how to connect it. Thanks for the heavy mental lifting.

That timer switch for the compressor is genius. I was just thinking about something like that to prevent accidentally running my compressor if the drain valve is stuck open, or prevent burning out the pump

I started taking careful notes to implement this for my air compressor, only to learn that PEX degrades rapidly when exposed to UV light (e.g. sunlight). Apparently latex paint can be used to protect PEX, but I'm going to use copper, PVC, or something else tolerant to sun exposure for the exterior parts.

Don't use PVC. That also degrades with UV exposure. Copper would be great.

I ended up using black pipe, since the exact length I needed was available pre-cut/threaded, and all the necessary adapters/fittings were easy to find.

    Teflon tape on wrong direction?

Yes it was but it worked fine on the install. I noted it was wrong in the video... I can never get that right but I'm not a plumber.

I did the same thing with my compressor a few years ago. However, I wired the automatic drain timer in to the run side of my compressor motor contactor, so that the drain timer is only active when my compressor is running. This does not waste air pressure and keeps the water out of my system.

plug to the switch side or switch to the motor side?

Great vid! Just curious did you purchase the integrated or split? Thank you!

I think I would tie that power switch on the tank drain into the circuit when the compressor kicks on. Then set the auto drain to every 1 or 2 minutes (While the compressor is running). Then set the drain time to maybe bleed of a couple short bursts like every few seconds or so. That way, everytime the compressor starts, so does the auto drain switch. When power goes off on the compressor switch, it also shuts off the auto drain switch.. Then, it's not popping off every 45 minutes during every 24 hour day. I don't know why the timer is only a max of 45 minutes....should be hours or days, not minutes.

I agree with you on that but I have mine wired into a timer so it only runs when the compressor is powered on by the timer.

Must have been the camera flip that made some views look backwards.

Does an automatic drain valve allow you to keep your tank full all the time so you’re ready to go anytime without having to refill the tank from empty? If that’s the case, wouldn’t you want the drain valve on all the time instead of wired to the motor run only when the compressor runs? Just trying to learn before I purchase one.

If you wired it to the wall, it would eventually drain all the air from your compressor or cause it to run since it purges air every time. You could wire it into the pressure switch but I'm not sure if the valve would work with 220v or not.

Why the need for annoying guitar music between everything you say?

Sorry. I'm learning the editing stuff and got carried away with the music. Point noted and my new videos will be less annoying with the music.
