  • We all remember the popular games (hence, why they were popular!) but what about the games the needed a second chance before they became more popular? In this video, I go over why games are given a second chance and some of the examples of games that are more popular now as retro titles than they were before.

      I go with the GC as well. Specifically Star Fox Adventures & Assault. I absolutely loved these games back in the day as a kid but only remember how many people said they are not as good as Star Fox 64. These days while gamers including myself which game is the best in the series I think gamers & Star Fox fans have come to appreciate them a lot more.

      I tried to get my classmates into Panzer Dragoon series and Die Hard Arcade back in the day. I had the Sega Saturn, I think they played and liked them when they visited, but then mocked me for not having a playstation.
      😭
      Guardian Heroes was my true fave. Only about 3 games beatemups that I ever played with that fixed multiplane style so that combos and special moves had the depth of a vs fighter. A Japan only PlayStation game (don't know the name) that was mostly fighting robots, and Code of Princess on DS. But they were both not as good.

    Definitely Wind Waker. Back then I thought it was the coolest thing to happen to the Zelda series; years later I couldn't believe that people wrote the game off entirely. The cutesy art style was deceptive, making you think the game would be a pushover when it was actually a monstrous adventure and a huge world to explore. It was almost like the game intentionally threw you curveballs to mislead your expectations, and then flip the table on you and surprise you later. I loved that. Same reason why people like "sleeper cars" (cars like a cheap 90s looking Camry but with an obese engine & turbo inside of it). Something that knocks you off your feet is a lot of fun.

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, Wind Waker is another game that I feel suffered from being in the shadow of Ocarina of Time back then (much like Majora's Mask).

    Growing up in the Blockbuster Video era, sometimes you'd stumble into these classics when all the copies of Street Fighter II were checked out. I used to tell people at school about Earthbound back in 1994 and how incredible of a game it was and then I was the biggest advocate for Chrono Trigger the next year. Sure sometimes you'd strike out and get a Clay Fighter renting the less popular SNES games on the shelf, but then sometimes you'd strike gold with an Earthbound or a Uniracers or an Actraiser.

    You nailed it with the entire Saturn library line. I didn’t know a single person growing up who had one and it was never really talked about. But looking back at its library now, it had a lot of good games. Too bad about the prices the games go for now, basically emulation is the only reasonable option for someone who would be interested in discovering the Saturn for the first time. Saturn emulation is still a bit choppy too.

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There's ways to just burn the games onto discs or emulate the optical drive. Still requires a bit of investment, but still drastically cheaper than collecting the games individually.

    • @aaronmartinez5029

      @@aaronmartinez5029 They seem to emulate pretty well on my Xeon E3-1231v3, and that was kind of an upper midrange gaming cpu from 2014. It's not one of those $2500 Xeons people would use in servers, it was a $250 chip that was basically an i7-4770 but marketed for low end server use. Anyways, even a $100 desktop i3 these days is more powerful than that cpu and should be able to emulate Saturn well.

    Psychonauts. I know that pretty much everyone who played it enjoyed it but the game did not sell well until it was released on Steam several years later. I found my PS2 copy at a local pawn store over a decade ago, and my sister still has it (and the PS2) to this day. We still both love the game and have never stopped singing it's praises.

    My pick has gotta be Actraiser. It hasn't exactly exploded in popularity nowadays, but I've heard more people express their love for that game way more than I ever heard back in the day. Hell, I screamed with excitement when the remake was announced, partially because I was amazed that it's still so loved that it was deemed remake-worthy.

    I was an OG Earthbound players. My friend started screaming to me about how I need to play this game called EarthBound and that I would love it, so he hands me the game with the players guide so I could borrow it and ever since it's been my favorite game ever made. Back then, I thought nobody knew about it because nobody really did know about it, but then a few years later I find out that there's a small but dedicated fan club to Earthbound and today it's beloved by a ton of people. Earthbound really did start out small and grow from there, the core audience is just so dedicated.

    For me it was games like klonoa Door to Phantomile and Xeno gears. I tried sharing these games for many years. Most people thought Klonoa was a kids game and Xeno gears was too complex a story to follow. There are plenty of great games that get lost in the shuffle. Eventually they are rediscovered and appreciated.

    I bought almost all the new Working Designs releases beginning in the late 90s and tracked down used copies of the earlier releases throughout the 00s. The guy who worked at what was then Babbage’s near my house seemed so confused that a kid wanted old-school JRPGs. Every time I went in the store he would always talk about the newest upcoming items for preorder (Lunar 1 & 2, Arc the Lad, Vanguard Bandits, etc.). He once told me, “You’re one of the only people we have buying this stuff.”
    I wouldn’t say every WD game is regarded with universal acclaim now, but they sure have gotten expensive.

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's pretty awesome you sought them out back then. I agree about the collecting nowadays. Working Designs is definitely something collectors will target. I'd even say some people probably collect some of the games regardless of what the individual game is, because of the reputation Working Designs has nowadays.

    • @happyhollandays

      Mario 2 is a strange case, because I feel like it was universally liked and very popular upon its release. Back then, there wasn't an established formula for what a Super Mario game was (because the US had only one game prior to Mario 2), so it wasn't really seen as straying from the formula. But then Mario 3 came out and it was basically Mario 1 on steroids, cementing what a 2D Mario game was going forward. It was at this point that I think we started realizing how Mario 2 was the odd sibling.

    The ones that come to mind first are games that I ended up getting late in a system's life, after most kids were playing other systems. Games like Weaponlord (talked about more now because of it being one of the first online fighting games compatible with XBand), and Comix Zone for Sega Genesis were later releases that I liked quite a bit. A few other Genesis games that more people talk about now are Beyond Oasis, Socket (still underrated in my opinion, but people mention the music being good at least), and Robocop vs. Terminator. One Super Nintendo beat 'em up game that I loved would be Marvel Super Heroes In War Of The Gems. It didn't get talked about back then because it came out pretty late, in 1996.

All the people who made videos openly wanting the 3DS to die are going to have some strongly worded comments posted in the year 2028. 2017 to 2019 were extremely underrated for the 3DS. Wait till the kids who grew up poor and couldn't get a new system finds out why Alpha Dream went under and why there are no more Mario&Luigi games.

    Final post (different topic chain) but I'm annoyed the Pocky and Rocky games haven't gotten people to look too much at them yet. They are honestly a really good and fun time. I think I first found out about them while I was being hospitalised for something... and for whatever reason they gave me a plastic bin with a SNES and several games to use before I got some tests done on me. Pocky and Rocky 2 was in that plastic bin. Really made my day--and it was definitely a game I looked for after then
    Maybe some people in the Touhou project could make a fan spin off that is essentially, "so... Pocky and Rocky was awesome... and we are continuing that"

    I didn’t know about Ness until the N64 as well. As a matter of fact I didn’t even know of Earthbound before I seen someone playing it on Twitch and also a lot of comments saying they want Mother 3. I grew up more with the N64 than the SNES because I was to young to know video games when the SNES launched. Also I remember the only advertising I would see as a kid was for toys like legos and such on TV. I can’t even recall seeing a video game add. If I didn’t see the game on the shelf at the store then I didn’t know about that game.

    I remember my best friend got Earthbound, when we were growing up & we played it nonstop. It was very quirky & weird, but that’s what made it great! We would be laughing so hard with each new bizarre enemy type you’d come across or crazy dialogue! We ended up beating it too, & I don’t remember if we had a strategy guide or not. Majora’s Mask was…interesting…but just too cryptic & difficult to get into, I don’t remember if we beat it; maybe? Anyway, I always loved weird games, since a lot of the games I got on holidays like Easter or something weren’t always as good as the ones I’d get for Christmas or my Birthday. Not all of them we’re great, but a few were fun & challenging, Dr. Franken on the Game Boy is a great hidden gem, & even other “bad” games I had like The Lawnmower Man, Total Carnage, or Drakkhen for SNES, had their good points. The controls weren’t always the best, or some game mechanics were funky, but it made it all the more satisfying when I was able to beat them. Sure, I had Mario, Zelda etc, but I’m glad I got to play the bad games, to help me appreciate the great games.

    Talking about games that might not aged well. There is a group of people who bashed the 2 sonic adventure games and said that they didn't aged well. I tried both of them in 2017 and 18 and they sure had aspects that are questionable but I had a blast playing those games so I don't see why people call them badly aged.

    Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic was not as popular back in the day with my friends since it was exclusive to Xbox and PC. Most people my age had PS2 or GameCube. Being single player, it wasn't something you'd want to play when friends were over. Luckily the game is still well supported on PC and has been ported several times.

    My favorite game which never got the credit it deserved was Metal Warriors on SNES partly because it was legitimately rare. Ironically, rarity caused it's collector's value and notoriety to rise so high that emulation is the only reasonable means to play it. That's a shame because this is a legitimate classic which will no doubt be lost to the ages.

    • @Gruntvc
      @Gruntvc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really hope that Metal Warriors gets remastered for current consoles and pc. I mean, they did remaster Zombies Are My Neighbors and its sequel earlier this year, also made by the og LucasArts.

      @MetalJody1990 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Emulation will prevent the game from being lost to the ages. That's partially why emulation exists. As long as computer usage by humans is relevant, no game from the 4th gen will be lost.

I bought it about a year ago and paid about $65 for it. I think it's because of it's atmosphere and the fact that you can play up to four players on it so it's a cool party game.

    One thing I wanted to mention about Earthbound is all of the weird advertisements they had in video game magazines. I have to think the ads are what killed U.S. sales. I remember looking at those ads, and I had no idea what kind of game Earthbound was. My best guess at the time was some sort of cartoony fighting game or beat-em-up due to the grotesque nature of the ads. But even that was a weak guess. Gross magazine ads was a thing back then but they took it to the next level with the Earthbound ads with the scratch and sniff.
    The thing is, that most gross out ads were for games which were known enough to where they didn't need explanation. But nobody knew what Earthbound was. And to think this was a time when JRPGS were becoming more popular in the U.S. and I know, I would have picked up the game back then if I had known it was an RPG. I feel like if they had gone with a traditional ad campaign that Earthbound would have sold many more copies.

      Misrepresenting your product is a really risky move, and it rarely seems to pay off! This might be one of the best (worst?) examples.
      Will it actually convince people to pick up a game that they wouldn't otherwise consider? And will they actually enjoy it once they do? (And can you avoid turning away the people who would actually want the game?)
