  • Everybody loves Nintendo's Mario games (well, almost everybody), but what are some alternatives? In this video, I give some game recommendations of games that I feel fans of Mario would appreciate.

It always makes me happy to see Little Nemo getting some love since it's been my #1 favorite retro game from childhood! So much so that the title screen music is my ringtone to this day. I ended up becoming the resident Little Nemo fan among my group of friends because of this game too. I own some of the original animation cels from the film as well as a store promo VHS copy, I'm working on a novel based around it, and I'm proud to say my name will be in both new Nemo games we're getting thanks to a contribution to the Kickstarters!

For a more recent indie game, I would absolutely recommend A Hat in Time for those looking for a 3D platformer with inspirations from Super Mario 64. It takes everything people love about games like Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie, and brings that style of game up to speed for the modern day. Definitely worth your time.

@@LittleBigKid707b New Super Lucky's Tale is also really fun. That's another great pick.
I've also tried out Lucky's Tale on the Oculus Rift (CV1, not Quest), but that one's more of a 3D platformer in a similar style to Crash Bandicoot. Definitely not as difficult as Crash, though.

Rayman 2 and 3 are games I would easily suggest for Mario fans. Or fans of 3D platformers in general. They have amazing music, great controls, unique stories and characters, and a really fun world to explore. Though the games are mostly linear in their structure, your goal is generally just to get to the end of the level, the way you go about it is so varied and fun. I recommend the Dreamcast and N64 versions of Rayman 2, as for Rayman 3 you really can’t go wrong with any of the home console releases. The Xbox and Gamecube versions would be my picks though

Personally, I think of Klonoa as being somewhat closer to Kirby and Yoshi games. Why? Because Klonoa, like those games, is a platformer where you have to use your enemies. Kirby eats them for powers, Yoshi eats them for eggs as ammo, and Klonoa throws them for ammo and for movement. Also Klonoa tends to be on the easier side, much like Kirby and Yoshi games (also, yeah, I differentiate Yoshi games from normal Mario).
Not that Mario is that far off of a comparison, seeing as they're both fun and delightful platformers.

True story for ya: Back in '89, my Mom rented a game with a printed label on it that said 'Baby Mario' , and it had a Famicom to NES converter attached to it. I played the heck out of this game to the point that - because my Mom kept renewing the rental - my Mom asked the rental shop manager to buy the game outright; this was my second game for the NES after Q-Bert and it got all the play time. In later years, I would come to discover that this title was actually called Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa!! by Konami, which was a Famicom Disk System game in 1988 but that was thrown on a cartridge in other territories (before being put on cartridge in Japan in '93). My sister still has that cartridge, while I bought a Disk System just for this one game; it's one of my favourites!
Upa is a cute little baby character who crawls through platforming levels and whacks enemies with his rattle, which blows them up like a balloon. You can let the enemies float away, headbutt them to use as projectiles, or jump on them as platforms. Levels are really creative, being made of candy, school supplies, Lego, toys...all kinds of kid-centric things (one level is a cake you have to eat your way through, lol), and the music is what you'd expect from Konami.
Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa!! is a wonderful Mario-like game that's a real trip with good challenge. You can play as Upa in the Parodius games, but his one solo experience certainly deserves a look by those who like Mario games!

I'm a Sonic fan, but I do have my favorite Mario games. Anyways I like Aero, Bubsy, and Astal. Then Rayman , High Seas havoc, Dynamite heady, and Ristar came into my life . I have more mascot platformers I love but there is so many

Ape Escape springs to mind for the Playstation.
The Platforming and Dual-Shock only gameplay compatability made it stand out from the crowd at the time, and i enjoyed the game very much.

All good choices! I've played all of these games and owned most of them. Sega actually had a number of platformers that were odd, but fun! Dynamite Headdy and Billy Hatcher are actually some of my favorites!
There are a number platformers I would recommend if you enjoy Mario: *Mischief Makers (N64), Adventure Island 2 or 3 (NES), James Pond 3 (Genesis), Rayman 2 The Great Escape (various platforms), Toki (NES/Genesis), Buster's Hidden Treasure (Genesis), Pac-Man World 2 (GameCube/PS2), Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (N64) and Spyro: A Hero's Tail (PS2/GameCube/XBox).*

    All great choices
If we're including headdy, Ristar, and rayman I would recommend Plok. It's also a mario inspired game where you throw your limbs and also very challenging like those, it's not very similar to mario games but it has the bright colors, catchy music, and strange levels.

It also inspired the visual style of Yoshi's Island, ironically enough. And Nintendo themselves almost published it.

Plok has amazing music, although the first couple levels are a weird combination of boring/weird difficult if you aren't patient.

Nice recommendations. I've been playing a game called Spinch recently which I would definitely recommend to Mario fans. It's a very unique 2d platformer with psychedelic visuals and awesome synth music. Definitely go for the Steam version if you can though as the Switch port has issues.

    • @IronMadden
      @IronMadden ปีที่แล้ว

I've tried Spinch before, and while I found the game alright, I honestly couldn't stand the underwater mechanics, and the last level has a major difficulty spike that can take you by surprise if you aren't ready. Swimming underwater felt like swimming through molasses to me.

Some fine choices here RB. Especially Klonoa and Rayman legends (SO GOOD). I had a really good time with Rayman 3 on GBA as well and it’s still not very expensive.
And hey, for anyone who has ever wished that Mario was a robot and had a gun for an arm, maybe try some mega man!

Toy Story 2 is surprisingly a very solid 3D platformer in the vein of Mario 64. I highly recommend it, don’t judge a book by its cover is the mantra that thing lives by.

We need more videos like this:
Games for Zelda fans (we already got that "Zelda clone" for Genesis, it's on Genesis 2 Mini)
    Games for Metroid fans
Games for Mega Man fans (Mighty No 9 is one example)
    Games for Pokemon fans
    Games for Final Fantasy fans
And so on, and so on...
