I cover some of the reasons why people are willing to buy games for as much or as little as they do, including all the different factors that determine value for any given gamer.

I Know 2 guys on this date they have 22/25 years and they buy games for the Sega Genesis / Megadrive!
That is the same thing about coins and stamps, there walways be someone collecting!
With 25 now days... They don't know the Sega Days in the 90's.
They collect because they simply like the original games without living the time when this retrogames where new.

My pet peeve is when you see an online listing for an item that isn't particularly rare and the price is below the going rate, but others are willing to pay market price. So many times I have been one of the first people to jump on the deal, only to get messaged by the seller saying "sorry, someone else offered me $XXX" (usually an amount close to the going rate). I wish those people would just choose to buy from sellers who post similar listings at market price if that is what they are willing to pay. It costs the same to them anyway! I get that at the end of the day money talks, but I was first, danggit!

While a part of me would like all games to be more affordable, the combination of rarity/desire and people defining the market definitely makes sense to me, and as I get into more obscure console libraries like Turbografx where there simply weren't that many copies of the games made to begin with and are even less on the second-hand market now, it's easier for me to justify shelling out $30 for a common turbografx game than a common-but-wanted super nintendo one because even a common TG game is rarer than most "rare" games on successful consoles.

Great vid, you make lots of good points. Here in the UK I primarily collect Sega Mega Drive, Mega CD and Saturn games, with Mega Drive titles making up the vast bulk of my collection. I only add games to my collection if they are compete with their boxes, manuals and are in very good condition, although I will allow for reasonable wearing. Due to my strict collecting conditions I have paid quite a bit for certain titles over the years, but since I started collecting way back in the late 90's/early 00's a lot of the games in my collection were picked up cheaply but have since skyrocketed in value. One quick example would be Terminator for the Mega CD. Back in 2003 I paid £10 for a near mint condition copy, these days on Ebay you'd be lucky to buy a copy in similar condition for under £180! Last year I bought a SNES and added a couple of SNES games that I'd always wanted to my collection. Let's just say that getting my hands on very good condition copies of Super Castlevania IV and TMNT IV:Turtles in Time, complete with boxes and manuals, cost me more than I like to think about. As a result my collecting has really slowed down over the last year!

  • @DavetheNESGuy

Another great discussion topic. I actually own a small video game store. What I’ve learned over the years is that in order to get in the popular and high-end games, you have to pay a lot for them. The way I look at it is this. Collectors want certain titles, and they want them at a relatively good price. However, in order to get those titles you typically have to buy them off of other collectors (usually in large collections), who also want fair value for their games. Odds are if you see a game that is expensive in a game store, it’s because the owner had to pay good value just to get that game in. In terms of paying a lot for a game, for me it’s all about value. If you think you’re going to play a game for tens of hours then it’s well worth paying the going rate for the game.

I think it is fair that a game far out of print would sell for more than original price, especially with inflation. There is no more being printed, and if there are few available, it is what it is. That being said, I would of course like them to be more reasonably priced, but it does make me appreciate what I have even more. The bigger issue for me is deciding if I should sell a game I already own because it sky rocketed in price. You know what they say, "A Retro Bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" :)

A lot of Hype for older games has inflated prices to be more than I would like to pay. There is no way I could repurchase my current collection. Honestly anything over $100 seems a bit much for older games. The real problem are not the gamers or collectors. It is the Investors. The value in sealed RETRO games is the unlikely miracle that it exists at all - a small piece of one's history that somehow survived the test of time without being opened or damaged. I'm partial to Mega Man, as it was my favorite franchise growing up, and being able to hold a sealed copy of Mega Man 3 is more of a nostalgia trip than playing it. Remembering the joy of getting a new game back then, of holding this little box of worlds to explore, abilities to experience, challenges to overcome, robot masters to defeat... Even before you opened the box you KNEW how much fun you were about to have. That long car ride home, holding the box, BEGGING your mom to let you open it in the car, pouring over the instructions imagining what it would be like to play it.
Getting a new game was the best moment in any kid's life back then, and consequently that's why SOOO few of them remain sealed. We tore in to those puppies faster than a piñata. Getting to own one as an adult is an incredibly rare joy and I absolutely believe it's worth the cost.
That said, keeping modern games sealed for the express purpose of speculation - expecting them to go up over time with the intention of selling them later for profit - is lame. There's no history, nostalgia, or attachment. Just a flipper playing the long con. Because of this there'll be TONS of today's sealed games 30 years from now, and I personally doubt prices will climb as high.

I’m glad some people keep Games sealed because I love opening them when I buy them. Plus I know I can keep them in pristine condition so starting with a new game helps with that. I just wish they weren’t so expensive. Obviously I can’t get every game sealed. Usually about as far back as I can afford sealed games for is the PS1. It's definitely a moving target in terms of what we "think" it's worth as the price changes, and that can go both ways.
I remember buying a complete copy of both Castlevania Bloodlines and Contra Hard Corps in 2017 for about 50-60$ each. At the time that was a lot to pay for singular Genesis games, and I wondered if it was "worth" spending that much on a Genesis games, because the Sega stuff had stayed cheaper for longer. Fast forward to today and those prices have at least quadrupled for mint complete copies, and so retroactively I look at those prices as "deals" I scored.

It is intereting watching value of video games over time. Remember games basically had the same or similar value once they were released on a system and as time wears on, its amazing how about 90% are worthless and the remining 10% are as expensive as a second mortgage.
My advise is, to get the games you really want when a system is winding down (like a PS4). That way you can get a deal and you can keep it in your collection.
Note I said 'want'. I suggest to buy games you will enjoy playing, not games for hope of profit, where's the fun in that?

It usually comes down to how much you want a particular game and can you afford it? If you can't, don't sweat it, you can always look for a similar alternative which might only be cheaper but better. That has happened to me once or twice, and gamers in the main are pretty helpful if you are looking for something. As always, Game ON One & All :-))

Ideas for future videos I'd love to hear your opinion on as follows (I watch your discussions but love the videos due to the comedic skits in them!!). 1) Games that aged well or will age well (genres, platforms, series). 2) The opposite, games that aged badly (same as before in terms of types of games, platform or series like Sonic, Mario, GTA etc...).

I used to collect older console games but seeing as how I will never have all the ones I want due to their rarity and price or that I will never have room to keep them all in, I settled for just being able to play the games in one way or another even if I have to resort to emulation.

People being upset about market prices isn't just restricted to video games. In this case though it's easy enough to just emulate. And if that's not good enough then maybe money isn't the real issue.

My plan is to use Everdrives on original hardware and buy the odd original here and there as a treat. While I’d love a mint collect of Mega Drive games in their boxes, the reality is I just want to enjoy games. Having said that, it’s Still pretty expensive if you’ve got to source the console, upscaler and then the Everdrive, but I think that’d a good place to start.

Lol The shield also does all the tv/movie streaming, google play store, pandora stuff.

Surface Pro is the dream though. Been wanting one of those things for awhile now. I have trouble justifying the price tag when I already have tablets around the house, a computer, the shield already doing emulation and an xbox one (getting ready to dev kit that as well)

Yeah, Money shaming is a thing that I see often on facebook groups, like " you spend money for sealed games? Youre scrub, youre that" and so on. Youre right with the purpose is to play them but its cool too that people care about having games in there original form if you bought them originally. I mean, if you want to play Yoshis story on the N64 you have plenty of options to buy them, so that couple of copys that stay sealed dont hurt the market. I find it still stupid what people pay but hey, not my problem, each there own. Other think that goes on my nerves is people that want the collectors and rare stuff but wouldnt pay much. I mean there is a reason that stuff like Castlevania Symphony of the night in the PAL version costs like 200€ + (its quite uncommon and every collector that have it keeps it and castlevania) and that you have people that want to pay 100€ max. I understand that you want to pay as less as possible but be realistic man. Is its just insulting when you sell stuff and you get questions like "20€?" for stuff that you put in there for 50€, thats the reason I prefer ebay, just put your stuff on there and when your price is good it will sell.

I am willing to do whatever if I really want to play a game. And honestly most of the games I emulate I bought at some point so I figure I own it. Or it was something that never came out here. I technically have 5 ish consoles because the Genesis mini, Pi, and Wii is my Gamecube. I do plan on getting a TG Mini soon. Point being, where am I gonna put all that stuff? Space is a consideration. I don't want thousands of carts in my apartment. And while I certainly wouldn't mind having back my 2600, NES Game Gear, Sega CD games and Genesis games back... I'm not buying them again. I love Punch Out! It's probably my second favorite game.
But I bought it around five times now.

I never really understand people who collect just for the sake of having things (in general). This whole trend of locking your games behind a VGA rating in a plastic hardshell case seems contrary to what games are; popculture (and I would argue, art. But that's a whole other discussion I will leave be for now).
When I bought Radiant Silvergun for the Saturn (my most expensive game purchase) the first thing I did was read the cool manual and absorbed all of the artwork and instructions inside of it. Then I popped it into my Saturn and gave it a whirl (for hours on end). As a work of artistic merit, a game is primarily an experience to be, well experienced (played). It starts with the physical, the admiring of a box art, the screenshots on the back, the goodies contained in the manual, the disc artwork, and cumulates with the act of playing the actual game.
Just buying Alien Soldier VGA rated 90+ to let it sit on your shelf is denying the essence of gaming as a cultural phenomenon itself. Ofcourse this happens to pretty much everything humans create (or even nature itself), and comes to some very philosophical questions regarding the nature of collecting. What is the purpose of collecting? Are there ethical considerations to collecting a thing? Why do people collect in the first place? All of these questions have interesting an various answers and will lead to more questions undoubtedly (most interesting questions do).
I would at least say that it is a shame that people with less means (monetary) are being priced out of the market. However this isn't (as the video says) the fault of any specific individual, that's just how a free market based on supply and demand works. So even though for most (sane, lol) people a physical copy of Alien Soldier isn't a real option, they are able to experience the actual act of playing the game through various means. These days we have so many options of playing games (FPGA, emulation, rereleases via digital services).
Oh and for anyone wondering why I mentioned Alien Soldier more than once; I had that game sitting in my Ebay cart with my finger on buy now more times than I can count these past few days! It's a sickness I swear :(

  • @megamix5403
    @megamix5403 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Regarding the argument of supplies. I'd like to present a rebuttal. Sure, we have a finite amount of copies produced from back in the day, but with the technology we have now. It isn't out of the realm of possibility. There have been repros done in the past, and while that's frowned upon because it's "not the original" companies like Retro-Bit and Limited Run have worked with the original IP holders to rerelease official new copied of old games, and in my opinion, that's as authentic as you can get, without breaking the bank from purchasing the original version.
Also, it's important to note that markups are dependant on nostalgia. You could easily find a GBA for cheap a few years ago, but nowadays they're almost $100.
Other than that, this was a good video. Keep up the good work, Retro Bird. :)

      @RetroBirdGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว

There's two main categories retro gaming can truly fall into, playing and collecting.
If you just want to PLAY retro games then a pre-setup raspberry pi 3 and above will play 95% of everything from the fifth gen and down for like $200 including storage and controllers. That alone is more potential game time that a human lifespan.
If you want the original physical storage medium of the games then you're in the same boat as art collectors (could have cheap prints instead of originals) and vinyl enthusiasts (mp3s are still the same songs). Supply and demand and the supply is never going to go up.
Personally, I emulate the expensive games and keep original hardware for when there are physical restrictions, i.e. lightguns or disc trickery (see vib ribbon et al).

I try not to spend too much more than the $60/70 mrsp of new games on retro titles. I have a couple of games that are in the $80 range but nothing over $90. For me, if it gets to $85 and above I’ll look for alternate ways to play the game, either digitally or official rereleases.
Sealed games is something I don’t really agree with. Games are meant to be played and I wouldn’t value a sealed game much more, if any, than a well taken care of copy. Sometimes I like buying games that are a little beat up with a decent label to save money and it adds some charm to the it.

IMO games should cost whatever they normally sell for. What I get really tired of is ebayers trying to charge two or three times the normal going rate for a game. If a game is worth $100 according to price tracking sites like pricecharting.com so be it. If a game sells at auction for $300 on ebay so be it. But if some doofus wants to list their copy of Splatterhouse 2 on ebay for $300 despite heavy cosmetic damage? Lol screw that! (Splatterhouse 2 CIB in good shape goes for $275 on ebay normally).

I think some time in the past decade, a lot of super popular games hit the "nostalgia threshold" in age, and a bunch of people who hadn't touched a game in decades entered the market with the assumption that retro games were far more valuable than they were. Now, because there were suddenly a bunch of people willing to pay a lot more, that drove the price up. Now games that are common enough to pave roads out of sell for double or triple their original price. IMO, if a game is common enough that you can hop on eBay and consistently find multiple copies for sale at any given time, it should not be worth more than it's original price.
