    No need to say which games I was playing in this video as I talk about each of them. That said, the game I am playing at (0:55) is Soul Calibur for Dreamcast.

      That's the real #1. The first time consoles were better than arcades.

    • @jackofallgamesTV
      @jackofallgamesTV ปีที่แล้ว

      @@valrond I would say Super Mario Brothers was the first time that home games were equal to arcade games. Getting arcade perfect Super Mario Brothers was a dream come true.
      ColecoVision was really close, but there's a couple fine details you can nitpick over , like the stationery Halo and wings when you die in the ColecoVision version of it ladybug versus the arcade when it flies up to heaven.

    • @valrond

      @@jackofallgamesTV Dude, SMB was never an arcade game. Mario Bros was.
      SMB was an NES game, the only way you saw that game on arcades was in Nintendo VS, which was basically an NES.
      And we had arcade perfect games with the X68000 and the Neo Geo and Neo Geo CD.
      But I'm talking about games that were BETTER than arcade games, that one was Soul Calibur.

    I can’t agree enough about just how special Mario 64 was at launch. I got the n64 and Mario x-mas of 1996 at age 9. We had 4 feet of snow and got snowed in. All I did was eat Christmas treats and play Mario 64 ( and pilotwings). Best Christmas of my life.

    Wii sports.
    I can safely throw aside my "hardcore gamer" persona to say that my Wii Sports experience with my family on Christmass was one of my most charming moments ever with my family in my life.
    No game could ever keep us playing and having so much fun together from 1am to 5am, thanks you so much Nintendo, i will never forget those moments.

    Super mario 64. Never had I interacted with a screen in such an immersive way before in my life. I could not believe the same TV that's been in my boring house was capable of this insane magic, seriously. That's the type of leap it was. Just jaw dropping. 2:14 even though it’s short several buttons, the GC controller is one of my absolute favourite-feeling controllers. It fits perfectly in my giant hands and the triggers are so meaty and satisfying to press. Sometimes I just sit there with the console off just spamming the triggers and then letting the springs rattle.
    One other thing about it is the layout of the 4 buttons: having the main button in the centre surrounded by the other three is genius because it gives equal, easy access to the other three buttons, and I don’t know why it hasn’t been copied since.

    Retrobird, you spoke to me during this video. I was almost born on 8/2/82 (but was born full-term in June instead) and I have a family of five. The Wii U provided five-player local gaming when practically no other console did. And Nintendoland is a game that my family has incredible memories with, memories spanning from 2013 to 2023. In fact, we just kind of rediscovered this game this summer and we've put in a solid 20 or so hours as a family of five running around in Mario Chase, Luigi's Mansion, and Animal Crossing. The laughter that happens when one of us has a huge head in Animal Crossing and has to dump all our candies in order to evade the cutlery police is truly remarkable. I whole heartedly approve your choice for favorite launch game of all time and I do believe I'm going to copy you now and use it as mine favorite as well.

    For me, the big game-changer was Tomb Raider. I remember going to the store and an N64 was setup and you could play Mario 64... first time I ever saw it. Blown away! Played the demo model for a few minutes and was amazed. But then... nearby, Tomb Raider was running on a Sega Saturn and that was also the first time I ever saw that game. I was ALSO blown away... and was more drawn to Tomb Raider. I think I bought a Saturn within the week and Tomb Raider with it. No regrets.

    So true about Mario 64. You just had to be there. It blew my mind. Kids today get exposed to video games even without playing them, like on TH-cam, twitch, etc. So they see what they can be. But as a kid, before the internet, everyone was used to 8-bit and 16-bit games that could only do so much. To pop in Mario 64 and walk around was easily the biggest leap in video game graphics. It will never happen again. The only time I was really blown away besides Mario 64 was seeing Gears of Wars on the Xbox 360 on an HDTV via component cables for the first time. That blew me away because I was so used to playing the original Xbox an old CRT TV. To see HD video games crystal clear on a 50 inch tv was surreal. Great video

    It's nice to see Nintendo Land get some love! While I didn't do any of the multiplayer, I had a blast in the early days of the Wii U playing a variety of its single player games. Great video! Most of my console releases were similar to yours but one that was different was Star Wars Rouge Squadron 2 for the GameCube. That game showed off the system soo well! I played the HECK out of it and then like a month later when I had a choice between Luigi’s Mansion and Super Smash Bros Melee, I went with Melee. And even though I was skeptical at first because although the first smash was fun, it doesn’t have a whole lot of content. OH baby did Melee ever fix that! Bigger start roster, hidden characters, trophies, homerun contest, all star mode, challenges and so so so much more I was satisfied with that game for easily 6 months 😂😊 Best and most memorable launch with those two games for almost a year. 😊😊

    Got my N64 my freshman year of High School, and although I played it a bunch, I never really played Mario 64 from start to finish. Just some random levels here and there on my friends saved games on their carts when I was over. So I got to see where my different friends were during their games. I now own the cartridge (one of those friends gave me their old copy), but didn’t start the game until 2 days ago on my Switch (3D Allstar collection). It still is crazy to me how the game holds up (even with some frustrating camera action going on). Looking forward to finally playing the game from start to finish, finding all the stars and seeing these levels as part of a whole rather then little snippets. Oh, and no guides….. Born in 81’ and haven’t lost my old school gaming mentality which is probably the reason why some 8 hour games take me 15…….

    First, I just wanna say I love your content, very entertaining! My favourite launch games are: Breath of the Wild, Wii Sports, Super Mario Bros (though, that depended where you lived), and Final Fantasy 4 (import+converter for PAL). Soul Caliber is probably 5th, I loved that game.
    The experience you had with Nintendo Land was basically Mario Kart (particularly original, 64, Wii, 7, and 8 Deluxe), Wii Sports, Rock Band, Guitar Hero, WarioWare Smooth Moves, Just Dance for me.
    The first few Just Dance came out at a time when guys and girls weren’t ashamed to be publicly horny for each other, and often, it was basically the ~2010 version of Twister in terms of flirtation party gaming. Good times. WarioWare was less common, but also a game that played a similar role.

    I love the diversity in your Top x Videos. A good mixture of must haves and surprising titles.
    Mario 64 is indeed a good example for a great launch title. I remember watching previews, where journalists played the first level.
    F-Zero on the SNES is one of my favorite launch titles. I have to admit that I was a little bit disappointed, that it was a single player racing game, but the soundtrack was awesome.
    On the GameCube, as Star Wars fan and addicted Player of X-Wing and Tie-Fighter games on PC, Rogue Squadron II, was a game I couldn't wait playing for.
    One quick note, I am watching my launch games from a European perspective, that's why it may differ from US releases. Keep in mid that back then I the 80 and 90 Europe was sometimes way behind the Japanese and US launches. SNES e. g. almost 2 years later compared to the Japanese launch.
    What I found odd though, after running back and forth in my memories, the newer the console generation, the less interesting launch titles have become. Especially Sony and Microsoft often gave me no particular reason to buy their consoles at launch. I even sold my PS4 after I bought it day one because I felt like there hasn't been any game I was interested. From that money I then bought a Wii U with some Zelda games and a PS3 instead😂.

    Similar to your experience, Super Mario 64 was a jaw dropping new console experience. However, my number one top “launch” experience was Ultima Online. It was one of the first MMORPG and the first game I played online. The idea of sharing a persistent world together with other people was just mind bending at the time.
    I remember walking up to even NPC’s thinking they were real people. But just the idea that each new experience when logging in was going to be different than the last time and that the world still lives on even when I log out, was a moment I’ll never forget.

    Good video! I agree Nintendo Land was a gem! I remember fondly playing with a few friends and it was a blast! Some attractions were better than others, but the package as a whole was traditional Nintendo fun! I just wish we got a Nintendo Land 2 on the Switch!
    When I was a kid, both Super Mario World and Super Mario 64 blew me away when they launched. I never was able to play (or own them) until much later, but when I eventually played them, they were both just amazing games packed with secrets! Mario 64 was especially revolutionary as I had never played a 3D game before. Also, if Mario 64 didn't exist to basically define 3D platformers we would never have received Banjo-Kazooie (amongst other great 3D platformers). ☺

    Well, here's my five:
    Super Mario Bros. - A seminal experience for anyone who never had any contact with videogames and a true classic that is still as playable and fun today as it was back then;
    Everybody’s Golf Portable - Couldn't put it down and was a staple of my PSP for a long time. Liked it so much that I kept chasing another similar game for a while, after Portable 2. It's just so fun and makes you want to try "just one more" every time;
    Sonic Adventure - I don't know how they pulled it off but I was hooked from start to finish. So much so that I was running, jumping and dashing all across levels finishing everything with all characters! Except for Big the Cat. Sorry Big;
    Super Monkey Ball - Incredibly simple and tight controls and a blast to play and replay! And Monkey Target! Oh my, what a treat to play with friends.
    Konami Krazy Racers - Mario Kart, Shmario Kart! Konami Krazy Racers was the true portable kart racer for me!

    I’m one of those people who found Breath of the Wild to be impenetrable and Nintendo must have too, because the elements and oddness that checks your progress in the (alleged) open environment of Breath of the Wild are totally absent in Tears of the Kingdom (as of this writing). What is a square bomb even for? Nintendo didn’t know either. Breath of the Wild was like a developer version of a game. Not even experimental, just unfinished with broken enemy encounters thoughtlessly scattered about to keep you busy amongst the hype. The emperor was never more naked when it came to Breath of the Wild. Backlash against questioning internet conformity made Breath of the Wild the biggest stinker I’ve ever had the displeasure of buying, let alone playing.
    Great Stuff, as always!
    My favorite gaming gathering moments revolve around N64 shooters (Turok 2 and it’s cerebral bore and of course Perfect Dark) and 16-bit sports and wrestling titles.

    My 1st Nintendo that I bought was a Game Boy, so my top pick would be Tetris for the GB. I played it so much I'd dream about it. Sometimes I wake up at 3am from an intense dream of Tetris & have to play it right then & there. Which by the way is a bad idea on work nights. Done it more than once too! Tetris in the Main Brain!

    I remember 3 bug launch game you forgot. Well actually you didn't forget, but you probably weren't around/old enough for the first 2 and the third might have got your attention in 89.
    First Donkey Kong for the Colecovision. When your neighbor had a "boxy" 2600 on their tv, you wanted the more realistic arcade-like machine like Colecovision.
    Also three years later, after seeing seeing Super Mario Bros in the arcade, to hear an "arcade perfect" version was coming to the NES, since Toys R Us didn't exist in Cleveland at the time (we had Children's Palace, Lionel Kiddie City, and Kay Bees) we traveled to Cincinnatti to buy an NES and a separate copy of Super Mario Bros. (Not a pack-in title. Gyromite and Duck Hunt were the pack ins)
    Finally the Game that had us get Genesis was Ghouls N Ghosts.
    I would actually argue the Colecovision had the best lineup ever, as well as the largest number of quality launch titles until the Dreamcast beat it.
    The Saturn Launch was Meh because it was a surprise launch.
    The 32X launch was the largest launch up until that point, and then 24 hours later, Sega announced the Saturn and the sales went down the toilet.
    Nintendo seems to have the best launch titles, and Dreamcast and Colecovision had the biggest and best launch libraries.
    No talk about Coleco?

    When I first heard the name Nintendo Land, I thought it was going to be a Nintendo version of Kingdom Hearts. Where you play as a character and visit the different Nintendo universes. A part of me wishes they went with that. I think it would have made a better first impression.

      It was absolutely jaw dropping. I mean, we are talking about the first 3D experience for most people. Not just first time playing one, but first time ever even seeing one or even conceptualizing that it was even possible. We couldn't believe our TVs at home were capable to work with it. It could have been just a tiny square space made in the game demoing the movement and we would have been blown away, but no, they had entire fricken worlds.

    Nintendoland is awesome with friends. Mario Chase and Luigi's Ghost Mansion are a riot, and the Animal Crossing game is fun as well. It's not much as a single player experience, but is outstanding with company!
    It's hard to narrow down a top 5. The Dreamcast launch has to be the best overall, but there were several games that hooked me, making it hard to narrow down. Power Stone, NFL 2K, Blue Stinger... I don't know.
    I can say for sure that Super Mario World captivated me for sure, and Keith Courage won me over as a Turbografx fan. Nintendoland won me over on Wii U. Mario 64 didn't get me at its launch, as it took me awhile to embrace the move to 3D, but it's my favorite N64 game now. If I had to pick just one Dreamcast game for launch, it has to be Power Stone. That game just lived in my brain to the point that it was the first game I brought home when I imported a Dreamcast before the US launch, followed shortly after by Blue Stinger and Sonic Adventure, then Langrisser Millennium and Espion-Age-Nts. So, I guess:
    Power Stone
    Nintendoland
    Mario 64
    Keith Courage
    Super Mario World

    Wii sports has to be up there. It had 3 major accomplishments. 1) it proved modern games could still be fun even with simple graphics. 2) it turned a hardware gimmick into a core part of a consoles identity. 3) it convinced so many non-traditional gamers to play videogames. Bonus: it tricked us into exercising. That's worse than Tetris making us use our brains.

    Super Mario 64 and Halo are my easy top choices, Soul Caliber and Tetris are behind them but not too far. It is one of those "You had to be there back then" moments of first playing a 3D game (Mario at that) that set the standard for 3D games. Then Xbox comes out and Halo sets the standards for FPS games and to this day is still my favorite Halo.

    Mario Kart 64, Block Fort. If you werent there for it you just cant understand what it was like. I think that was the first game where my entire friend group would be together taking turns 4 player battling until dawn. Never before would we have been up playing, and just one game the whole time mind you, for such a marathon of hours. And we did it numerous times.

    I still think the Dreamcast launch lineup is the best of all-time. I bought 7 launch games: Mortal Kombat Gold, NFL2K, NFL Blitz 2000, Power Stone, Ready 2 Rumble Boxing, Sonic Adventure, & Soul Calibur. I loved them all. With most systems I've owned, I'm not even at 7 games a year after launch.
    Also, I still play the original Monkey Ball with my kids to this day. Surprisingly amazing launch game & I don't think any other game in the series has topped it, although Monkey Ball 2 comes very close.
