    Doom has always been one of my favorite game series and Doom 64 has a special place amongst Doom games. Everyone I know back then thought that it would just be another console port of the original PC game but boy were we wrong! Doom 64 was a complete new game! Everything was redone from scratch : Textures, sprites, music and levels. The overall atmosphere of the game was now changed to spooky with dark rooms, new lightning effects and dark ambient soundtracks (done by the same guy who did the awesome soundtracks for the PS1/Saturn Doom port)
    A new weapon was added called the Unmaker which you could upgrade by collecting demon artifacts in the secret levels.
    There is a super secret level right after the first level, it’s called Hectic and its purpose is to unlock a secret options menu which was basicly a cheat menu. I unlocked it but didn’t use anything from it in the main game. There are 3 additional fun levels which can only be accessed through the secret menu. In two of those I activated the cheats.. just for fun :)
    If you want to play Doom64 by yourself there are fan ports for Windows of it like Doom64EX and also Brutal Doom 64 (which adds a lot of new effects and brutality)

      I recently started playing Brutal Doom 64 and initially my first impressions of Doom 64 was that it was awesome, then I encountered those "ghost imps" who can teleport from one side of a room to another, always able to get a cheap hit in on you, it was then that I realised that I don't like Doom 64. Don't get me wrong, I've been playing Doom since 1993 and am a huge fan of the game but those cheap ass, magical ghost imps who can disappear and then reappear in a different position totally ruined Doom 64 for me, they just seem so cheap and unfair.

      the game was not well regarded as it had a very different vibe to normal doom even though it looked more like Quake, the fact that there is no music and everything is dark makes this game very dark lol for that time, There's also the fact that after passing a few maps the rest of the maps start to get generic and boring. I believe that's why doom 64 was not respected

    Recently discovered this game thanks to it currently being on sale for $1.64 (whoever gave it that price deserves a raise) on the PSN store. Personally, I think this is my favourite Doom ever! The "Alien"-esque aesthetic is something I can't get enough of, and the music genuinely creeps me out. I found out when looking it up that this is a polarizing release in the Doom library, and I'm baffled as to why.

Also, the music on I think the 4th or fifth level of Doom 64 with the distorted sound effects of the infants crying is genuinely disturbing.

    Many years ago, I had this game. I barely got to enjoy it. One afternoon I was playing it and my childhood friend was visiting. My dad came home from work and asked if I had done my homework. I might have said something he didn't like, I was only 14. But seeing the game art I think is what set him off as he associated it with something demonic. He took the game to the kitchen and beat it with a hammer. I love my dad but I regret how he was at times. I guess sometimes my house was like the' Psycho Dad' character popular here on YT.

I was spoiled by Goldeneye so whenever I did play them I only had a brief but enjoyable hour long experience. Doom 64 might be the best classic doom experience today. Music and sound design is very creepy, and in tandem the animations and levels are memorably cryptic and hellish. I used to love this game, it was darker than the previous versions, literally dark af, i remember turning my brightness up on my tv 😂 but besides that this was my fav out of all the original versions because of its difficulty and look, the atmosphere while being lost was my favorite part, and the hell like corridors.

    This is a very good Doom - much better than the PlayStation- and Saturn-versions - and sometimes it's brutal difficult. But it's so dark - even when you adjust the brightness you have troubles with the contrast, so you have to play it in a really dark room but honestly, this game should be played in the darkness - with headphones - to make a well doomed atmosphere...

    • @ClassicDOOM
      @ClassicDOOM 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fortunately the 2020 retail ports of Doom 64 allow much more control over video options, including brightness. You _can_ make it as unplayably dark as the N64 original, or, now you have the option to actually see what's going on! ;)

    I set my monitor to max brightness, and yet I barely can see something here and there, too dark and blurry... Is the real thing just like that? I hope not the one included with Eternal, at least.

    • @longplayarchive
      @longplayarchive  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep, that’s exactly the real thing as that’s how we record our stuff. You’ll get better picture quality on emulation

    • @SaturnJap
      @SaturnJap 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@longplayarchive Oh, I see. Well, I prefer sharper and brighter visuals, but I bet this game will look definitely sharper and brighter as enhanced preorder bonus game version with Ps4/Xb1 Doom Eternal. 😉

    • @longplayarchive
      @longplayarchive  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      JustM.E. Totally, me too. With an UltraHDMI mod you can usually get games a little brighter. This is just a common problem with N64 games where some are almost unplayable due to how dark they are

    • @SaturnJap
      @SaturnJap 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@longplayarchive I know it right, especially with the composite output it's often all just a blacky messy pixels soup!
      In fact I bought an already RGB modded N64 some years ago and the visuals were very good with a decent number of games, they looked kind of sharp and bright for the console itself (either used with a generic scart to hdmi converter into a 4k Lindy upscaler to a 2016 4k tv (super-sharp) or rgb scart directly on a 20 years old crt tv (still a bit blurry)), but unfortunately last year all of a sudden it stopped to work. It still turned on, but only a black screen appeared with no audio... 😕
      The problem is that the little I know about hardware in general is only theoretical, I wouldn't actually know where to put my tiny hands to fix anything... 😊

    • @longplayarchive
      @longplayarchive  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahah I’m all the same! Appreciate the info. I’m definitely getting an upscaler for future N64 recordings. Some N64 games also have different refresh rates for the menu screens so whenever I pause some games, my recorder creates a new video file. Upscalers should fix that. Hopefully improve the quality a bit whilst at it
