I was raised in Marina, moved to Silicon Valley as an adult, and came back to care for my mom when the time came. I've now moved half way across the country for reasons I don't regret, but I miss Marina every day. I miss the smell, I miss the fog, and I miss running into neighbors and friends at the grocery store or post office. It's such an awesome town! I love that you're doing these videos!

One thing I love about the Brits… You do not need captions! I can understand every word

I think Saltwood Kitchen and Oysterette classifies as high end. I also want to highlight the diversity of ethnic restaurants in Marina because of the diversity of our population. We have the best Korean restaurants on the Peninsula as well as high quality sushi, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, Philippino and Hawaiian options in addition to Mexican and even a pupuseria. We have great local diners to. The options for eating out are fantastic. Under amenities, we have the pump track, skate park and great local parks. We are an official tree city, with strong support to keep it that way. And we really do have amazing community. Finally, we are relatively tourist free. Marina is truly a great place to live. Thanks for highlighting that.

Hey Alastair. I did film a little bit where I mentioned Saltwood and shot a scenesetter but the sound was pretty bad so I just cut that for the sake of the video. I agree it is a really nice place!

I was a refugee from LA who found Marina in 2017 and instantly fell in love. I ended up living there for nearly 3 years (before circumstances forced me back home, although I still go back twice a year to chill) and for a while thought I was in paradise; I lived right across the street from a charming pond, and another big park with a marsh (Locke-Paddon) and hiking trails was just a few blocks away. The town is as beautiful as Monterey but more down to earth, affordable, very safe, and has a great mellow vibe overall. I think you pretty much nailed it here, although I'd say two things--yes, there is a smell on occasion but it's very mild and never really bothered me, and also I would consider the fog that rolls in the summer to be a pro, not a con (I love fog--there's a dreamy, mysterious quality to it, especially as it rolls in just as the sun is setting). Also, I wouldn't consider the lack of high-end dining to be an issue either, since Monterey is literally less than 10 minutes away, plus the food in Marina is incredible--it has practically every cuisine for being such a small town (although you're right--no Indian), and the fact that it is so cheap at such high quality is a definite plus, not a negative. Anyways, watching your video I got a strong urge to move right back!

Ive lived in marina since 2021 . I’ve never heard of the Marina smell - much less smelled it. I live 2 1/2 miles from the ocean . I love this little town . I will be staying long term . Lucky me 🎉

Another comment: you speak of The Dunes area and the Target shopping center as “out of town.” It’s within the City of Marina (ending at Divarty St.) The area you walked through (under construction) is termed The Promenade.

I lived there from 96 to 98. I was a bartender at The Gold Rush. Crazy times!! The smell he’s talking comes from Gilroy Garlic Factorys when the winds come down from the the north and to to ocean. I can’t believe this guy doesn’t know that. Maybe he should take a trip to Gilroy. He’ll find the same smell there.

Don't forget Castroville in regards to fog, they have it just as bad as Marina.

Fog for me is not a downside! If you don’t like fog, you should seriously reconsider another area

The smell is a phenomenon called "red tide". The same thing happens on the Pacific side of Costa Rica.

I lived in Monterey Co. for about 20 years beginning in 1992... I'm now out of state, but the Central Coast was my one fond memory of a life in California in general. Love your videos, it's like being back.

@@movingtomontereycalifornia I lived in Salinas 2 years, then moved to Monterey proper, to the Apt. complex on 501 Ocean Ave. I worked at The Monterey Herald. I was able to walk downtown for coffee... Hung out at all the various coffee places, and at Dennys often. Also loved Pacific Grove. I was part of the Theatre community in my spare time.

Concerned about the lack of transit. I hate driving, & having to use a car to go anywhere. Its great that there is plenty of new construction, & low income housing, but all it does is add more traffic congestion, which increases travel times. It looks like it could be bike friendly.
