So for anyone on a mac the way to add numbering on headings is to go to your heading styles. Click format style. IN the bottom left corner of the pop up you will see a drop down list that says 'font', change that to 'numbering' IT will bring up a new pop up that allows you to format your heading numbers.
Really helpful

tnx but I want my H2 follow my H1 numbering, in the video that was not explained. now under my H5 it starts from 7.1 but it should be 5.1. do you have any tutorial for this section? thanks
Thank you so much for for watching! If you select Home > Multilevel List > Define New Multilevel List, you can then customize how each level should appear.
I've had heck with the automatic numbering on a 1000+ pg. project. The problem is that Word is now geared toward professionals, I guess, who have all the time in the world to write code. The numbering scheme I used went into my template, and THEN kept reappearing even after I tried all different ways to stop it. If I changed the documents, the template would "reinfect" them; and vice-versa. I finally had to go into developer and STOP the automatic updating. That automatic updating is helpful, but it can REALLY cause a problem, and no one seemed to be able to answer why it happened. Word REALLY has many bugs and issues. A person should be able to turn on the numbering and then turn it off again with the click of a button, not have to go through so many steps.
Good info. Lol at the New Jersey accent and Indian vocabulary.
Thank you!
✨But I want to know how to restore the automation number if I'd delete it. Does anyone know how to restore it?
Thank you for watching! If you accidentally delete the heading number, you should be able to select that heading and then select the number format from the Styles menu in the Home tab. I wish you all the best with your Word project!
@@erinwrightwriting oh thank you! I'll give it a try
@@erinwrightwriting I tried to figure it out but unfortunately I didn't get it. I also tried some syntaxes like {listnum} but it didn't work. once deleted they cannot be restored 🤷♂
