I resonate so hard with how Adam said he was as a Mormon, I was so similar. The whole changing my whole personality for my mission disturbed me greatly and started my major doubting. I also only ever told 1 joke on my mission, and I freaking got in trouble for it because my mission president was a freaking fascist who believed that humor was irreverent and improper for "believers of Christ."
I mean, in the temple we covenanted to “avoid loud laughter”. I, too, lost my personality on my mission.
Comedian Elaine Boozler has an old joke about topless Mormons. The punch line is "No bonnets." This did not go over well with the priesthood group I shared it with. 😅
Loved this ep. Especially towards the end when you were talking about not being prepared to apply for college, I went through that too. I was prepared to be a wife and mother, not a graduate 😅 it still bothers me decades later.

Excellent guest and conversation, blending both serious issues with lots of humor. Also, Carah, for what it's worth (take it, or leave it), there have been so many times that I have missed what you're trying to say when you go into a very high-pitched voice at the same time as you are talking too fast for the listener to hear and process what you are saying. In this episode, you were very conversational in your delivery; so I wasn't missing things and getting frustrated by it. 👏🎊

Fun to hear about your Ohio connections! I grew up in northeast Ohio about 10 miles away from the Mormon Temple in Kirtland. As a kid, I had no exposures at all to Mormons, totally off my radar. Really didn't know anything about them until the Osmond brothers became popular! LOL1 I did go on a school field trip to the Mormon temple in Kirtland when I was in fourth grade, but all I really got out of it was that this was some kind of church from pioneer days. My own hometown had two lighthouses, which I thought was way cooler.

@@CarahBurrellCarah, that so-called “praise music” the most. I strongly recommend that you go to a main service there in SLC at either the Catholic or Episcopal Cathedral. Just sit, listen, and watch. If you haven’t been in such a service, you are missing the worship practices of the majority of people who believe that Jesus is the son of God, he died so that we can live forever in his presence, and that he came alive again and while still alive ascended to heaven to live with God and all the saints. The fundamental beliefs of the great majority of Christians are contained in a statement that is repeated during every service, sometimes called mass, called the Nicene Creed. It has that name because it was arrived at, agreed upon, at an organizational meeting held among the leaders of the early Christian churches after Christianity became legal throughout the Roman empire. The meeting was held in a town called Nicea. I hope you go to such a service at least once and especially listen to the music, the instrumental music, the singing and the hymns that are sung. I would be curious to here your reactions to such an experience.
