Meditation Instruction -How to meditate. Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Shambhala

  • Chögyam Trungpa gives a general orientation to meditation in the Buddhist tradition and gives meditation instruction. This is essentially the same basic instruction that he gave throughout the time he was in the United States. It is also virtually identical with the meditation instruction that was the basis of Shambhala Training and is still used extensively, along with other approaches.
This approach is meditation as a way of life rather than purely as a practice.
We can't reject ourselves before we know what we are. Meditation allows us to realize and understand ourselves, without either chickening out-rejecting ourselves-or congratulating ourselves. This requires a sort of heroism.
This approach to meditation is based on bhavana, a Sanskrit term that means exertion or discipline. Unless you are willing to discipline yourself through practice, you are in a hopeless situation.
Through practice, you see the colours of your own existence in a very down to earth way.
Chögyam Trungpa speaks about how he has personally gained wisdom and clarity from practicing meditation in this way.

I studied at the Shambhala NYC center years ago, but once I found out more about his personal life and his actions - I grew disillusioned with him, the sub-culture and his followers., who would not acknowledge it. I wish he practiced what he taught. He was an alcoholic, a womanizer, among other things. However, these teachings make so much more sense to me than anything else I’ve learned in my lifetime and I keep coming back to the books, notes and practice on my own. Pema Chodron is one of his most famous students.

That book, & "Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism" started me on the never-ending Buddhist Path in 1982, ended up with him at Naropa. Luckily, the Institute was closed, during his Cremation, as i went into 10 days of Ecstasy during his Mahasamadhi. I was the Receptionist then, & volunteered to take care of the Dean-Peter Hurst's son while he & wife went to Vermont for the Ceremony.

@@hologramhouse729 It's been 6 years, but I can answer your question, at least for the tradition I was raised in. Here in America, the "classic" method of meditation they teach, that they tried to teach me as a kid, is to "breathe in what's good, and breathe out the bad". I'm not kidding. I know a local American karate/Tai chi instructor who still teaches kids exactly that. We teach to pollute with every single breath. Instead of basic goodness, we teach the exact opposite - "original sin". That's why people think they can't transform bad into good, only the other way around. We teach to breathe out shit, so I call it bullshit. We also teach to focus more on the in-breath, rather than the dissolution. So this leads to self-obsession and pollution. Luckily there was a priest (Fr. Lavin, ostensibly the "art" teacher) who taught us more fruitful meditation techniques. Not the most profound techniques, but good for our situation. Even though he was a catholic priest, it was obvious he'd been to some "interfaith" retreats. IOW, we were lucky to have a weirdo teacher, because the classic New York American technique was to be full of ourselves and pollute. But even a brief, regular switcheroo, of real meditation, was enough to keep the door open.

I appreciate Chogyam Trungpa’s effort to instruct us on how to meditate. Studying various opinions, including that of Krishnamurti’s and from Buddhist traditions, I have come to my own conclusion, that meditation is a state, not an act. Therefore, to repeat Jiddu Krishnamurti, there is no method. It is the state in which just the observation of disorder in our mind happens. Trungpa says the same. In other words, you don’t need someone to lead you, for this. Which also means, We are the ones who create gurus, due to our need for a stimulating narrative. We should blame ourselves, if we must.

We did need a Teacher, up until the Seal of the Era of Prophets. During the GMO'ing of Humanity, Moses represented The Father of Humanity, with the 10 Commandments, as People in that sector of Creation didn't even know yet, "Thou Shalt Not Kill" Then Jesus taught Love, saying He would "Met us in The Temple" (the body). During the time of Mohammed (PBOH), the Tent of Abrahamic Seeding supposedly caught up to Buddhic civilizations. Now (& always), the Teacher (The Awakened One) is Within. I Remember CTR telling us that we'd probably live to see the "degeneration of the Human Species", that we needed to continue Meditation Practice in groups, to hold the Awake Vibration. What shocked me into remembering this is that he said, even Monks & Nuns would fall prey to this degeneration. Been looking for my Sangha ever since he passed, not in a big city.

I would like to add an alternative view. Since the mind is nothing but noise empty of value its content already a reflection of/on nothing what possible value can there be in such a ‘state’ of mind. if what you are “IS” prior to mind and remains after the body mind association dissolves, as it seems, then waking to your Self can happen and does apparently happen regardless of practice of any mindfull or temporal states.
Pure being is an ever present reality not a state or condition and is immediately noticed irregardless of length of practice or experienced level achieved in minfullness training. A greater appreciation and simultaneously and paradoxically liberation from seeking what is Not is the only practice that can be fruitful. The fruit is already on the ground one needs only to stop shaking the trees.

Because of ignorance, stupid people only sees negativity in a genuine Guru. Because of this, Tantrayana (a swift method to reach enlightenment) is given only to the most able and wise students. They see only his drinking, but they don't know His drinking never affect His wisdom because He can control intoxication.
Whether He is a Boddhisattva or not was proved during His funeral. The signs of highest spritual realization were seen by everyone. The rainbow around the sun. The Devine orange flame like cloud.

He was a true Bodhisattva. We learn from all cultures. His path was to help people achieve self-realization. Some humans are unable to on their own. The rainbows that appeared in the sky about three of them and around the sun as he was cremated was an affirmation of his humble presence and his reason for being here. . read Ānāpānasati Sutta. There’s thousands of “meditations”, but “meditation on breath” is what historical Buddha used to actually achieve enlightenment.
Breath is nice and neutral in emotional content, is always conveniently with you, and can be automatic or conscious…. you can just observe it or relax it or intensify it……

It's funny... in the west (where I'm from) we associate wisdom with thinking things through, making advantageous decisions, and so on. We're taught to rely on our thoughts to provide wisdom. Our religious text (bible) tells us that wisdom is a king who offers to cut a baby in half, in a story with so many holes it could've been the holy of holies. So, when Buddhists (Anerican practitioners, at first) told me about wisdom, it took me a hot minute to figure out it was almost the opposite to the usual aphorisms I'd associated with "wisdom", conventional wisdom if you will.
I'd never considered that there could be a gap between thoughts, because my mind was thoughts, and that's what I was using to search with, like using a telescope to look for dark matter. The Dobbists scripture says "You can't see your own eyes, because what are you going to look at them with?" And the answer is you're supposed to see them in J.R. Bob Dobbs' glasses, but a clear mirror would be better, for sure.
It's weird. I use nouns all day and night, but intellectually I know they don't exist, except as a practical linguistic conceptual shortcut when dealing with the world on a human time scale, dealing with mundane situations. But I don't think I can abide in the nouns of meditation and wisdom. I'm certain that compassion isn't a noun, except when thinking about it. And I'm pretty sure compassion training and wisdom training lead to the same reality, just from a different angle. The thing I'm unsure about is what, if any, is helpful language with which to think and write about this stuff. Helpful, as in, doesn't lead the reader and/or writer further into samsara, right? This wasn't meant to refute Albert's point (or the Platform Sutra!). I'm not sure why I wrote it. That's what made me worry - who else will be reading this, and what effect will it have on them? It was a good faith attempt, to share a tiny, hopefully relevant, bit of what little knowledge I've experienced in this life.

Heavy-lidded and defocused is my recommendation. Like in the sculptures!
read Ānāpānasati Sutta. There’s thousands of “meditations”, but “meditation on breath” is what historical Buddha used. Breath is nice and neutral in emotional content, is always conveniently with you, and can be automatic or conscious…. you can just observe it or relax it or intensify it……
One thing I would point out that might be helpful. When you “fall off” your meditation, it’s not the “falling off”, but the getting back on that is the thing. Actually, that’s not very helpful at all!
Good luck and just do it! Conduct your own experiments and be a light unto yourself.

Have a few lines , several bottles of whiskey, and a few shags. That may do the trick.

Alone this expression AVATAR is the nose keeping too high!
And SHAMBALA is a spiritual world and not from this world.
So, to name a course-system after that is too much!

Sadly yes, a greatly aware, awake teacher, who was also an alcoholic and who, much of the time, seems to have wanted anyone who was even a little aware themselves, to call him on some of his bullshit.

And all the people sitting there and paying for this!
So, of course, they "see and feel something" in Trungpa and his "teachings"!
The original is Buddha, and he never asked for money!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, don’t care too much about homeboy’s drink, but this is a crap meditation instruction.
Just read Ānāpānasati Sutta for a good lesson direct from the Buddha.

Not even in the same country. There is a long history of people sitting in the far east. Many people finding enlightenment. A lot of Buddha's. Gautama knew everyone had a different path, urged people to find their own way, and to extend or discard his teachings.
This guy and pema helped me through my addiction, and I will be forever grateful for that. They helped me with a lot of things, through these videos and their books. So did a lot of Gautama Buddha's discourses, but these characters more so. Thanks to the Bodhisattva.

Why do you keep doing this, wandering all around TH-cam, displaying the fact that you have no real training, no insight and no idea much of the time what you are even talking about? That is so sad and so pathetic.
