Parinirvana 2017 video, Talk 9 from "The Yogic Songs of Milarepa" . Naropa University, 12 Aug 1976. Boulder, Colorado. Shambhala Archives. fundshambhalaarchives.org . Kalapa Media www.kalapamedia.org
Mahamudra means "great symbol". “And when we talk about symbol in this case, we're not talking about something representing something else, but we are talking about actual, direct contact. Fire burns: that is a symbol of fire. Sun shines: that is the symbol of sun.” (1.07)
“So the idea of symbolism in this case of mahamudra experience is what we experience in our ordinary, everyday life situation, quite simply, directly, [our] ordinary, everyday life situation: our hot dogs and our toilet seats. Peanut butter jelly sandwich,…”
He discusses the experience of Simplicity, One-Taste, One-pointedness, and Nonmeditation. He also says “I could say that: that there's no such thing as sudden enlightenment” (20.15) and discusses that.

Chögyam Trungpa explains the reality of Tantric thought and practice with piercing clarity. After 40 years of practice, I have still never found a more direct, authentic and challenging teacher. Warning, this teaching may be damaging to your ego :o)

it is funny what you say. I am only 24 years old and began attending to Trungpa about 3 years ago.. it hasn't been necessarily beneficial for my ego

I hear that. My ego fought tooth and nail for a while there, now it’s crying doesn’t seem to bother me. May you know great bliss in emptiness.

    Milarepa
    Response to a Logician
The best seeing is the way of "nonseeing"
the radiance of the mind itself.
The best prize is what cannot be looked for
the priceless treasure of the mind itself.
The most nourishing food is "noneating"
    the transcendent food of samadhi.
The most thirst-quenching drink is "nondrinking"
    the nectar of heartfelt compassion.
    Oh, this self-realizing awareness
    is beyond words and description!
The mind is not the world of children,
nor is it that of logicians.
    Attaining the truth of "nonattainment,"
    you receive the highest initiation.
Perceiving the void of high and low,
    you reach the sublime stage.
    Approaching the truth of "nonmovement,"
    you follow the supreme path.
Knowing the end of birth and death,
    the ultimate purpose is fulfilled.
    Seeing the emptiness of reason,
    supreme logic is perfected.
When you know that great and small are groundless,
you have entered the highest gateway.
    Comprehending beyond good and evil
opens the way to perfect skill.
    Experiencing the dissolution of duality,
    you embrace the highest view.
    Observing the truth of "nonobservation"
    opens the way to meditating.
    Comprehending beyond "ought" and "oughtn't"
opens the way to perfect action.
When you realize the truth of "noneffort,"
you are approaching the highest fruition.
Ignorant are those who lack this truth:
    arrogant teachers inflated by learning,
    scholars bewitched by mere words,
    and yogis seduced by prejudice.
For though they yearn for freedom,
    they find only enslavement.

The cause of all suffering is the mistaken view that we are separate from our experience and from 'other experiencers'. The experience of separation is the root cause of all misery.

Is he really saying that satori is a myth? Or is he trying to steer us away from the "sudden enlightenment" approach because we aren't capable?

    • @ezraepstein6933
      @ezraepstein6933 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Danny Pound good question.
My own take is more the latter: but not so much that we're incapable per se, rather that it becomes also an unfolding discovery. A living of it, as it were. That's what I take from it. Both: cool our jets on outcome (remove the idea of gaining) and still inspire to engage with the journey. Also: start with experience and our immediate experience is valid.
That's what I get at least. Happy to hear your or other's perspectives here.
