Totally the kind of project I'd blindly walk into (and at some point ask myself if I really know what I'm doing!) You made it very approachable. Also, nice guns, Lefty.
where did you purchase your pvc vinyl to make this repair? we need 5" and none of the major hardware stores will cut the standard 5.5" boards down to a 5" width despite having the tools to rip it down in seconds. I am hoping you have the name of somewhere we can get these boards - thanks
Excellent video in all aspects! Learned a lot from the video! Very educational! Watched it from the start to the end! I became your subscriber today (September 8, 2024). I am in Maryland. Thanks for such a great video!

TH-cam is blocking the "Comment Bar" on cell phones! PVC is great stuff for trim. I have 2 stationary windows that are slanted at the tops. $1,450 each, W/O labor is discouraging! PVC has come down in price and some are using regular PVC glue with the plug caps over screws. The sill and brick molding is rotting after 34 years. I can't tell where it stops but butts up to the glass. A vibratory cutter would make short work by installing a temp narrow filler strip the remove the old. It has a good cap but the bottom of the brick molding was never sealed wicking water up the fibers of the wood. Just looking for support as I am living here until my boots leave first. Thoughts? Thanks for the informative video. ASE Master retire / decent wood worker. Thanks!!!
I was wondering if you would be able to answer a question....can you remove capping to view the condition of a wood frame without completely removing the window? Thanks.
Where did you get the right size pvc vinyl? Seems that the standard is 5.5" wide - Ours are 5" wide so it will be a bear to cut just a half inch off each board. Neither Home Depot, Lowes or Menards will cut anything along the length although they clearly have the tools to do it quickly. We have a smaller too but it will be a tedious process for us to cut it bit by bit. Where did you or anyone else reading this purchase their PVC vinyl for this job?
Most builders will use nominal width boards that you can get from places like Lowes and Home Depot. If it doesn’t match what I need I just rip with my table saw.
Great video, thanks! Would you recommend only replacing boards that are rotted and mismatching wood/vinyl? I have a couple windows where 3 of the 4 trim boards are good and just need new paint. Thanks
Thank you. If money isn't as much of a concern, I would definitely do as much as you can at the same time. You'll already have your tools out and the work will go much faster. With that being said, I have noticed that the white of the vinyl generally matches white trim really well, so it isn't that noticeable. So you may not end up with much obvious mismatch if you decide to do later.
The J Moulding is pried up at the beginning and the piece of PVC is placed underneath to replace the wood board. It’s still there, I just pushed out of the way to replace the wood.
I do not know as I am not familiar with Smartsiding. I assume the resin and wax in it is pretty darn durable though. It seems that it’s more resistant to impact even if it may not last as long.
My LP smartside trim is rotting and distorting after 7 or 8 years. I'm replacing it all with pvc. The LP trim face seems durable but the ends are apparently raw rips from a large sheet so its all open.
You are amazing. You can make anything and now you’re teaching home repairs. Thanks for this amazing video. Make sure Andrew sees this one.

LOL, brother. Hadn't heard from you in a while and was wondering where you went! Yeah, trim work is no fun...

Great video !! You answered a lot of my questions ! Thank you 🎉
You bet, Brendan. Glad it helped and thanks for watching!

I'm going to be building a house soon and I'm going to use this from the get-go so I never have to replace them. :)
Smart move, Darold! Wish I had done that…

Very good 👍
appreciate that, Chi. Thanks for watching!
Do you think I should consider adding any extra tape flashing before putting the PVC trim board up?
Hi Joe, it can never hurt, especially if you think the vapor barrier beneath may have been compromised.
I was wondering if you would be able to answer a question....can you remove capping to view the condition of a wood frame without completely removing the window? Thanks.
I personally do not know the answer to that. On older windows I would think so but not so sure about newer ones. Sorry!

@@asdf-jv8iv Thank you for your support!
flashing should be folded at the corner to provide more water resistance, but yeah that's more work...
agreed. it would have been nice had the building done that so i had more to work with! a lot of caulking works too :)
Great job
Appreciate that, Elmer. Thank you for watching!
With the drip cap and everything I wonder why the trim had rotted to begin with.
The first issue was cheap finger joint boards. It is also on a very shady side of the house that doesn’t get sun 😢
Maybe that OG wood wouldn’t have rotted out if the drip cap was installed correctly to begin with
Please do tell how you think this was installed incorrectly?
What? This can't be the correct way to trim out a window. If it is I apologize but where's the j mouldings? How can this be a watertight seal?
The J Moulding is pried up at the beginning and the piece of PVC is placed underneath to replace the wood board. It’s still there, I just pushed out of the way to replace the wood.
You think pvc trim is better then lol smart siding
