Beside his voice and style of singing, what really amazes me about Elvis is how good he sang so many different songs. I have never heard another singer that could sing every style as great as him.

Me, too. The way Elvis goes from a major scale to a minor is unexpected, and nails the transition. He’s only gotten out a handful of La’s, but he’s already drawn us in with the emotional depth he’s conveying.

Elvis's vocals are indescribable, no word is good enough to define it. This is a much different song for him, so soulful, sad and haunting. To me this song defines part of his life in how he felt......the emptiness and loneliness.

I like how Elvis conveys vulnerability, mental tiredness and perhaps even depression in this rendering. The version you're hearing is less cluttered than the mixed version, which added to commercial appeal but lacked the simplicity of the stripped-back mix. About Roy Orbison - the Big O was one singer Elvis avoided covering. Elvis did not think his covers of Roy could do justice. In 1976, from the Las Vegas stage, Elvis introduced Roy Orbison, who was in the audience. Elvis, who often spoke of singers he admired, described Orbison to the audience in the best way possible: "the greatest singer in the world." Elvis was a big fan!

He and Roy were friends, who knows. But he surpasses Roy , in voice quality. Roy was part of the million dollar quartet from sun records. It was Johnny Cash, jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, maybe Roy came later. They all knew each other well. I know they did a tribute when Elvis died and Roy was part of that. "This Train is Bound for Glory" this one is seldom played, A shame that people don't explore the whole catalogue like my man Seph does. Thanks my friend,. 😀. mary

Undoubtedly one of the greatest tracks in the Presley cannon, have a listen to the originally released version with orchestral overdubs, takes it to a whole new level, either way both versions are ethereal in sounding, ahead of its time, belongs in the new romantics period of the early 80s IMHO!

Listening to the session out-takes for this song, it is evident how hard Elvis worked on it, and it certainly shows in this amazing master take. No-one can shift gears so easily and convincingly as The King. He makes you feel it alright, like no-one else can. He was a genius. You are quite right to rank it high Seph. 4th comment: Songwriter Info (2): Sonny Charles (born Charles Hemphill, September 4, 1940) is an American soul singer.
Charles Hemphill born to a sharecropping family at Blytheville, Arkansas. At the age of 10. he moved with his parents and six sisters to Fort Wayne, Indiana.
He was the lead singer of the Checkmates, Ltd. in the 1960s and 1970s, and it is his vocals that are heard out front on their 1969 Phil Spector-produced hit, "Black Pearl". Charles launched a solo career in the early 1970s, and had a brief reunion with the Checkmates during the 1980s. Thereafter, from the mid- to late 1990s, he toured with another member of the Checkmates, Ltd., Marvin "Sweet Louie" Smith, under the Checkmates name.
Charles's 1982 album, The Sun Still Shines, recorded on Highrise Records, hit #136 on the Billboard album chart and #14 on U.S. Black Albums on the strength of the single "Put It in a Magazine". Written by Charles with producer Bobby Paris, the song went to #2 on the R&B Singles chart and reached #40 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1983. The follow-up single, "Always on My Mind", peaked at #53, but Charles quickly fell from view.
Charles toured with the Steve Miller Band in 2008 to 2012.
And that is finally all I've got for this one Seph & everybody!

3rd comment: Songwriter Info (1): Michael Garrett (17 June 1944-23 August 2023) was a British composer, born in Leicestershire. He was active in composing and performing for more than fifty years. His many works extend across a wide range of styles.
He wrote many symphonic, chamber and instrumental works as well as vocal music and wrote extensively for the piano. During the 1960s his early compositions incorporated experiments with serial techniques; and in the years since then composed music in a more melodic vein. He began studying the piano and composing in 1956 and studied at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London where he won a scholarship to study with Edmund Rubbra (1961-1964). He also studied piano with Frank Merrick who was himself a pupil of Theodor Leschetizky. He composed music for two Ken Russell films Women in Love (1969) and Savage Messiah (1972). He worked as composer and pianist in the theatre, gave piano recitals of jazz and experimental music, and also composed a jingle for the Scottish Gas Board.
He gave the first performances in the UK of John Cage's "Concert for Piano and Orchestra", which was conducted by John Cale before he moved to the US and joined The Velvet Underground with Lou Reed.
Garrett was musical director for Lindsay Kemp's mime company, which included David Bowie and toured Britain and Europe. He was music director on Lindsey Kemp's film 'Pierrot In Turquoise' during which he plays piano. He composed music for television documentaries and was bandleader on the liner Canberra on a world cruise. He recorded in Paris with jazz trumpeter Bill Coleman and drummer Art Taylor. The album 'Bill Coleman Plus Four' (JCD196) remains available as a download.
Born in Leicester, he studied at the Guildhall School of Music and lived and worked in London for the early part of his musical career. He taught music and piano. He married Jane Brogan who was from Edinburgh and with whom he had a daughter, Clare born 2.10.1968. In 1974 he married Anne Maitland Hunter ( now Robertson ) Both these marriages ended in divorce. He lived in Edinburgh for two main periods and in London from 1975 until 2001 London. On returning to Edinburgh in 2001,he created and regularly performed and directed The Michael Garrett Ensemble in concerts of his own and other music. His recent works include a setting of Robert Burns' "Braw lads o' Gala Water" for soprano and piano. His "Refrain de danse oriental" for wordless soprano is often accompanied by the composer wearing a fez. In his late sixties he met Ishbel Maltman whom he married in 2014 when he was 70. Ishbel survives him.

@@SephPlays Yes, it was released as a single and it reached #36 in the hot 100 in the US and 23 in the UK in August 1971. It should have charted higher. I doubt there were 35 songs better than that one. Sometimes, the masses are just idiots. Biggest example being Chuck Berry keeping Elvis from another #1 in 1972 with the dumbest novelty song ever played, My Ding A Ling. It kept Burning Love out of the top spot. Fast forward even just a few years and no one cared for Berry’s song. Burning Love is a classic and one of Elvis’ most recognizable songs. 🤷‍♂️

Take 2: Long False Start 2:26 (followed by rehearsal)
    Take 3: Complete
Take# Not Available: (Master) 3:54 Undubbed Master
Overdub (Master) 4:06 Brass & Strings overdubs on May 25, 1971 unedited Master
    Faded Master: 3:50 Master Faded
Note: I think what you reacted to Seph was the Undubbed Master. In my humble opinion, concerning some songs the Undubbed Masters are actually better, some even WAY better. I don't think this song needs brass & strings (violins, ugh, those violins sometimes get on my last nerve I tell you).
The version you reacted to had no "Fade" at the end.
It has been a while since I listened to this one, I'll be honest.
It's just that I go through Elvis phases.
I've been stuck on certain 1950's and 1960's ballads recently.
Sometimes life calls for a ballad being sung to you by a 🎶Big Ol' Hunk O' Love🎶😂
Oh, and between Takes 3 & 4 Elvis expressed his fondness for "I'm Leavin" saying, "Phew, man, it's tough but the thing is worth workin' on."
It seemed important to Elvis he did proper justice to this song and its message.
I'll try to leave songwriter info in separate comments 😀👍
    TCB ⚡ & TLC ❤ & peace ✌& blessings 🙏 to you & yours & to one & all here as well 💕

@@SephPlays In all honesty I have not listened to all these songs in quite a while.
I do think when it comes to the majority of country music it's better without the orchestral arrangements.
With Gospel music the orchestral arrangements can highten the "Heavenly" sound experience.
It just really depends on your personal preference.
I'll give the Masters a re- listen and let you know as soon as I am able Seph 😊👍
I'm just hesitant to give an honest opinion when I really couldn't tell you.

"Oh, no! Don't leave! I don't want you to leave. This is gonna be sad, man. I don't like people leavin' on me." (0:04) I'm not going anywhere.
That whistle. It may be the first I've heard you make. Pretty. (2:40)
"That feeling when you got no one there... especially if you've been in like a long-term relationship, that you just expect somebody to be there. And then you reach out and no one's there. For that split second it's almost like a panic. It's like 'Oh, where is she or where is he?' And then it dawns on you and it's like, 'Oh, yeah.'" (8:25) Oh, man. You just keep hitting me with memories of my ex-bf. For the longest time after we broke up I had these phantom feelings of him lying next to me in bed. For years I assumed a sleeping position as if he was still there.
Oh, this gesture you make with your arm and fingers as Elvis hit that high note when he's singing, "I'm leavin''". (3:52) (9:35) (11:44) (12:25)
"You're gonna hate me." (12:17) Never.
"My heart. I can't take it. I'm melting, man." (12:30) Me too.
"Please... actually, I don't know. If it's not sang live, just lie to me. Say, 'Yes, sang live.'" (13:58) "Come on and lay with me. Come on and lie to me. Tell me you love me. Say I'm the only one."
Hauntingly beautiful folk/country/pop tune and completely atypical of what Elvis usually sings. It reminds me of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" by The Band. Particularly the choruses where the band sings, "They went, 'Na, na, la, na, na, la'. This one's going on my playlists.

@@SephPlays Super cool you checked out "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." I love Levons' vocals, those chorus harmonies, and that piano. It's The Band's best tune, in my opinion.
"I'm Leavin'" continues to rattle around in my head. Elvis sounds so heartbroken. "Who will I have to lie beside me?"
I have such fond memories of that ex-bf. Still so much love for him. Such a good man. We continue to keep in touch even though he's been married for years now. I was so lucky to have met him, and I knew it at the time. So your inadvertent reminders are sweet and emotionally charged and allow me to relive some of my fondest memories of our time together.
