The Story Of Elvis & His NFL Fandom
"Elvis loved football far more than most people realize," Angie Marchese, VP of archives and exhibits at Graceland, told me via telephone. "He was truly passionate about it. His mom never let him play in high school but the game interested him his entire life.
"He would go over game tape as if he was the coach, he would draw up his own plays. He would watch as many games as he possibly could and we have archived all kinds of incredible memorabilia."
Marchese is the architect of a popular Graceland display that features an extraordinary array of football-themed Elvis artifacts, including a vintage Browns bobblehead that he collected, plays drawn up for sandlot games, jerseys, photographs and even a rhinestone suit he wore to the opening game of the World Football League’s Memphis Southmen (he was a season ticket holder).
His most beloved team was the Browns through the 60s - more on that later - but by the time the 1970s rolled around, Presley was a devout follower of the Steelers and their star quarterback, Bradshaw, who takes up the story.
"I was in Vegas giving a corporate presentation, because that’s how I made money in the offseason," Bradshaw, who first saw Presley play when he was 5 at the Louisiana Hayride, owns copies of several Presley documentaries and is a particular fan of his gospel music, said. "Elvis called, told me he liked the way I played and invited me to see him, but I had to catch a flight to another city so I had to turn him down.
"It would have been the story of a lifetime, playing backyard football with Elvis. It showed how much of a fan he was, that he wanted an NFL player to come and play with him and his buddies."
    TO BE CONTINUED....

One of his most emotive vocals & I adore this song! Elvis sounds so intimate here, it's definitely a superior version with the overdubs removed.
Kris Kristofferson said that he got the inspiration for the song from an Esquire magazine interview with Frank Sinatra. When asked what he believed in, Frank replied "Booze, broads, or the bible.... whatever helps me make it through the night". Super reaction Seph! Loved it! 💯 ❤

Spliced (Master) 2:44 (Spliced from Take 11 & ending from Take 16 Undubbed Master)
Overdub Master 2:45 String Overdubs on June 22, 1971.
Okay so: This is the Undubbed Master you reacted to Seph. No strings, no backing vocals. And while I TOTALLY respect The Imperials and Mary and Ginger Holladay and have the UTMOST respect for Miss Millie Kirkham, I have to admit I prefer the version without the strings and backing vocals.
If I said it once I've said it a million times I don't like orchestral elements in country music. I don't think it fits.
The Undubbed Master is superior in my opinion.

2nd comment: Songwriter Info (Bio short only because there is no way I can fit it all here):
Kristoffer Kristofferson (born June 22, 1936) is an American retired country singer, songwriter, and actor. Among his songwriting credits are "Me and Bobby McGee", "For the Good Times", "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down", and "Help Me Make It Through the Night", all of which were hits for other artists.
In 1985, Kristofferson joined fellow country artists Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash in the country music supergroup The Highwaymen, which was a key creative force in the outlaw country music movement that eschewed the traditional Nashville country music machine in favor of independent songwriting and producing.
As an actor, Kristofferson is known for his roles in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973), Blume in Love (1973), Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), A Star Is Born (1976) (which earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor), Convoy (1978), Heaven's Gate (1980), Stagecoach (1986), Lone Star (1996), and the Blade film trilogy (1998-2004).
In 2004, Kristofferson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Link here for anyone interested in reading (really interesting in my opinion by the way): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kris_Kristofferson
    🚨SEPH: "A STAR IS BORN" SPOILER ALERT"🚨
Elvis was offered the male lead by Barbara Streisand.
Elvis fans will tell you this once they read the above.
Everyone has their own theory on why it never came to pass.
Since this all happened in 1974 this is ahead of where you are now so I shall refrain myself from talking about it here.

I just listened to the original version of this song next to this alternate, stripped-down mix. This alternate version is far superior. It really showcases the nuances you pointed out in Elvis' vocals. And it also brings out the richly performed instrumentation - the guitar, bass, and piano. If i kept the adverts on from my end you would see an advert every 60 seconds "Surprisingly a LOT of TH-camrs opt to do this!!" Personally if i see 8 adverts on an 8 minute video i'm clicking off! Freakin hate TH-cam when it comes to adverts....

The song has been covered by a lot of top artists over the years. Kris Kristofferson wrote it and sang it first, he had a major worldwide hit with it. Other artists also had great success with it.
I don't feel this one and the lyrics don't speak to me, it's ok D-.

This song is oooooolala. First of all the lyrics alone coming from Elvis is too much to handle. And then the way he sings them are awesome. I'm so glad that he makes these songs his own.

@@jennyjorgensen9935 Jenny, idk if it's a girl vs guy take on it or what, but I wonder how Rob would rate the song if it was coming from a female artist that he loves as much as Elvis singing the song.

Ohhh Barbara! You have a good point here! And not just about this song but *All* songs in general?
Would people enjoy certain songs more or less if a female singer was singing the male songs. Or vice versa. Very interesting subject!
