So just my own humble thoughts on this one: Not every song Elvis recorded was deeply felt. We all know this.
But I will say here I think Elvis chose this one because he felt the lyrics on a more personal level.
There was a part of Elvis that struggled with feelings of loneliness. I think this was partly because he MAY have suffered from what we know as today as "Twin Survivor Guilt".
Elvis did not like being alone all that much. This is why he always had people or at least someone with him.
I think it is important to bear in mind also that men in general are not always encouraged to show certain emotions or to always talk about things that are heavier on their minds.
And most especially the generation of men that Elvis was a part of.
I think he dealt with more deeply personal thoughts and feelings in his own way and I think that too might have contributed to feelings of loneliness at times.
You know how sometimes you can be in a crowd and still feel like you don't quite belong?
I think there were times Elvis felt like that.
And according to more than one guy that knew Elvis personally, back in those days a guy didn't talk about feelings to his guy friends. He talked about that stuff to a lady friend or his girlfriend or his wife.
Elvis, according to some, was the same way. He was one of the guys, sure. But Elvis also liked to spend time with women, sometimes to just talk about things he thought he couldn't with other guys.
Judy Spreckles for instance was one such lady. She was a friend, never a lover. Elvis and her were very close friends and for decades after his passing away people hounded her to "reveal" stuff about Elvis, stuff he told her in confidence, and she always turned them down flat, saying that, "Elvis was my friend. What he told me he trusted me with to keep strictly between us. And that's exactly what I am going to do. What Elvis told me in our years of friendship I'll take my grave."
And she did too. She never did betray their friendship or his trust in her as a friend.
That's one thing I can say for Judy Spreckles that I cannot say for a lot of other people in Elvis's life.
She was a true friend, a loyal friend to him.
I'm glad he had her in his life.
    Anyway... Onwards & Upwards!
    Recording Session Info Below:
"We Can Make The Morning" written by Jay Ramsey.
    Recorded at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee on May 20/21 1971 Hours: May 20th: 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m./ May 20th & 21st: 9:00 p.m.- 12:00 a.m./ May 21st: 1:00 a.m.- 4:00 a.m.
    Producer: Felton Jarvis
    Engineer: Al Pachucki
    Musicians:
    Guitar: James Burton
    Guitar: Chip Young
    Guitar: Charlie Hodge
    Guitar: Joe Esposito
    Drums: Kenneth Buttrey
    Piano: David Briggs
    Bass: Norbert Putnam
    Organ: Charlie McCoy
    Back Up Vocals: The Imperials:
    Jimmie Murray
    Terry Blackwood
    Greg Gordon
    Joe Moscheo
    Armond Morales
    Ladies:
    Mary Holladay
    Ginger Holladay
    Millie Kirkham
Take # Unavailable: (Master) 4:06 Undubbed Master
Overdub (Master) Brass & String Overdubs on May 25, 1971
Overdub (Master) 4:11 Additional Brass & String Overdubs on June 21, 1971
    Faded Master: 3:54 Master faded
Final Note: Again this is just my own humble opinion but I am torn on which version of this song I prefer.
Elvis Undubbed Master or the Dubbed Master (the one you reacted to Seph).
If the Undubbed Master had been recorded with *JUST* the backing vocals I think for me that would have been Chef's 💋👌
But with all additional string overdubs... The strings were unnecessary. They're too loud for my liking. This is why I am not always impressed with Felton Jarvis as the producer. Yes I know he was Elvis's guy. But I also know that at times Felton made last minute decisions on the recordings without asking Elvis first which then ticked Elvis off.
Elvis REALLY did not like having his recordings messed with. But it did happen. "Suspicious Minds" being one prime example.
So I have no idea if all of these strings overdubs was Elvis's decision or a decision made by Felton Jarvis or perhaps it was a decision that was made during a talk/ consult between the two men.
    I really have no clue.
If anyone DOES know more on that I would LOVE for you to share.
    Thank you in advance 🙏
    TCB ⚡ & TLC ❤ & peace ✌& blessings 🙏 to you & yours & to one & all here as well 💕

Edit: Forgot to add: "We Can Make The Morning" was first recorded by Elvis Presley and would be released as a single on the B- side of "Until It's Time For You To Go" in 1972.

I agree with you, Sammy. The Undubbed Master is superior sounding, but I too miss that wall of backing vocals in the chorus .
In general, I'm finding that I prefer these Undubbed Master versions over the excessively produced versions that were originally released.

@@balovett Me too! I think Felton Jarvis missed the mark at times. I think it's Felton Jarvis anyway. He IS the producer and according to what I read Elvis trusted him and he was known as "Elvis's guy" when it came to anything and everything having to do with production.

This song fits Elvis like a glove.
He was afraid of the long, dark, and lonely nights.
Most of his nights were a fight against silence, sadness, and depression.
When the long-awaited morning broke, and the Sun began to rise, he could finally rest and sleep.

Seph: One of my favorite session drummers Larrie London, (underrated and under appreciated) came in for the overdubbed percussion parts on this track. He later toured with Elvis in place of Ronnie Tutt. He related some very, very privileged information regarding that time. You should seek him out on some old videos of his drum “clinics” where he discusses death threats Elvis received, the FBI warnings, security etc. It’s out on TH-cam.

2nd comment: Gerald Hugh Ramsey (a.k.a. Jay Ramsey) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and performer. As a recording artist in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, Ramsey had releases on several record labels including United Artist Records, Reprise Records, Casablanca Records, ABC Records and Hanover Records. His songs have been recorded by popular artists including Elvis Presley, Conway Twitty, Roy Clark, Johnny Tillotson, and Billy Mize. His song "We Can Make the Morning" was included on Presley's 1972 Gold award-winning album Elvis Now on RCA Records.
Ramsey grew up in Sanger, Texas and attended Sanger High School. When he was 14 years old his parents took him to donate used clothing to an orphanage and while there he noticed his father's previously donated guitar sitting against a wall in the director's office. He asked the director about the guitar and was told he could take it home. After one lesson from his father, he taught himself to play. Ramsey began writing songs at the age of 16 and began performing in a band while in high school. He attended college at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. In 1962 he married Joan Speck of Celina, Texas and together they have two daughters. Ramsey and Speck have since divorced.[failed verification]
In high school, Ramsey was a member of the Denton, Texas group Kids from Texas. The band was signed to New York City label Hanover Records in 1958 and released the single, "Long Legged Linda" b/w the Gerald H. Ramsey song "I'm So Lonely" (Hanover Records release #4500).[better source needed]
In the early 1960s, Ramsey met WRR Dallas disc jockey Bob Kelly at Kelly's Dallas recording studio, Top Ten Recording Studio. Kelly was a well known disc jockey at Dallas radio station WRR, a record producer, and recording engineer. In 1962 Ramsey's first single "Smooth Talking Woman" b/w "Look Away Love" was released on Kelly's record label, Libra Records, under the name Jay Ramsey & The Contempos (Libra release #B.K-1001)
In 1963, Ramsey, Bob Kelly, Frank Cole, and Jerry Brown formed the band, The Expressions. The group released a single with Chicago-based Smash Records, a subsidiary of Mercury Records
[better source needed] Ramsey's song "Thrill" was the A-side b/w "Come Back Karen" which was written by the band (Smash Records release #S-1848). The single had no chart success.
In 1965, The Expressions were signed by Reprise Records. Reprise released a single with two of Ramsey's songs "One Plus One" b/w "Playboy" (Reprise Records #0360). In 1965, they became a 5 piece self contained band by adding Kirby St. Romain. The five members then performed and recorded together with no personnel changes for over 10 years.
By 1968 the band had changed its name to Expression and in 1971 they recorded an album for Mediarts Records entitled "Texas/Nevada Border" (Mediarts Records release #41-9). The label released the single "California is Just Mississippi" b/w "Let Us Pray" (Mediarts Records release #ME-104). The song made it to the top ten in several major markets, but never charted nationally. This single was also released in Germany by United Artists Records (United Artists #35 250).
In the 1970s, Jay signed with Surety Songs and Blue Crest Music (both Nashville publishing companies) and worked for a while as a full-time songwriter.
In 1971, Kenny Price recorded Ramsey's song "Tonopah Highway" on his RCA Records album The Sheriff of Boone County (LSP-4527).
In 1972, Ramsey's song "We Can Make The Morning" was included in Elvis Presley's famed album Elvis Now. Ramsey's song "We Can Make the Morning" was also included on the only single from the album, "Until It's Time for You to Go" / "We Can Make The Morning" (RCA release #2188). The album Elvis Now achieved Gold status from the Recording Industry's Association of America (RIAA). The single "Until It's Time for You to Go"/"We Can Make the Morning" reached number 9 on the Adult Contemporary Chart in the US and number 5 on the UK Singles Chart.
Also in 1972, Ramsey's song "Lord, Let It Rain" was recorded by Roy Clark and released on Dot Records album Roy Clark Country! (DOS-#25997) Clark's album peaked at number 10 on the US Country charts and number 112 on the US charts.
In 1973, Billy Mize released a single of Ramsey's song "California is Just Mississippi" with United Artists Records (UA-XW265-W) which reached number 99 on the Country Music charts.
In 1973, Ramsey released the single, "Draggin' Chains' b/w "The Saddest Song" (both Ramsey compositions) on ABC Records (ABC-#11385). In 1979, Conway Twitty recorded "Draggin' Chains" and another of Ramsey's songs, "If You Can't Write the Music," for his MCA Records album Cross Winds (MCA-3086). Cross Winds peaked at number 11 and spent 26 weeks on the Top Country Albums chart. "Draggin' Chains" was also released on Conway Twitty's single "Don't Take it Away" b/w "Draggin Chains" (MCA-41002). This single peaked at number 12 on the US Country Music charts and number 15 on the Canada Country Music charts.
In 1974, Billy Mize also recorded Ramsey's "Lord Let It Rain" for United Artists (UA-XW503-X).
In 1975, Ramsey recorded his songs on the single "Smokey Mountain Cowboy" b/w "Sunshine In My Morning" (NB-820) with Casablanca Records. "Smokey Mountain Cowboy" charted at number one on WKDA radio in Nashville. In 1977, Johnny Tillotson recorded Ramsey's song "Sunshine in My Morning" for his album Johnny Tillotson released by United Artists Records (UA-LA758-G).
    *Fingers crossed this goes through*

    @balovett 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

This bit with Kingsley is super cute. He's been with you almost from the start. What was the inspiration for his creation? Did you design his image and each of his expressions?
"I don't know why he ever decides to put them in the front. " (3:58) Regarding the mix of the songs, I'd be surprised if Elvis had input into that part of the recording process, but maybe he did. If anyone would know, I bet it would be Sammy.
But I agree with the point you are making. The vocal mix is particularly good here. To my ears the backing singers' vocals are at about the same level as Elvis' vocals. It's a really powerful effect. The combination really makes this song soar.
I love the start of your post-song reaction. (6:16) You're so pleased with this discovery that you almost say "shit" followed by an incredible happy dance.

In an effort to cut back on cussing I try to think of acceptable alternatives to say.
"Holy Cannoli" is one of my "Sammy Originals" 😉
      Others:
"Holy Schnikes" (I just started saying this when I was a kid. Whether I came up with it or heard it somewhere I cannot for the life of me remember)
      "Snowballs" (replacement for 💩balls)
"Fudge" & "Fiddlesticks" (replacements for the F- word. This one comes to me from my Grandma. She was Polish- Catholic, and therefore never cussed)
"Bloomin' heck" (Seph- ism I have decided to add to my daily vernacular)
      Then there others like:
      "Holy Snowballs Batman!"
      Or:
"What in the snowglobes is going on here?"
You can get Seasonally/ Holiday creative with it.
      For Halloween:
      "Screeching heck"
      "Last one's a rotten pumpkin!"

Hope you & yours are doing well Brad 🙏

@@sammy_the_uncool2702 Those swearing alternatives are cute. I particularly like your original, "Holy Cannoli." Your examples are really fun. But I have a bit of a foul mouth, so I don't have any alternatives to add.
I just googled "bloomin'" because I hear Seph say that a lot and it's unfamiliar to me. One explanation says, "blooming is kinda is the "happy" counterpart of bloody." Which then requires a definition for "bloody," which is given as more of an emphasizing word than, so to say, very. It's also specially used to express anger. Seph, do you think those definitions are correct?

@@balovett Yes I am trying to cut down on cussing. New job and all that. Cussing is greatly frowned upon where I shall be working.
So. Creative Alternatives it is for those moments when say I stub my toe or something 😅
I do notice in a handful of his reactions Seph also says "reckon" as in "I reckon that this is a love song and not a Gospel song."
As far as I know no one here in America says the word "I reckon" and I drove through cowboy country, more than once.
Admittedly, before discovering and watching Seph's reactions, I have never heard anyone use the word "reckon" in the nowadays.
Now for the REAL million dollar question: Do we call them Seph- isms or British- isms?
      😉

@@sammy_the_uncool2702 Huh, reckon Seph has picked up the word while listening to Elvis interviews and the like. I have a hard time imagining that it's a word that has a history of use in the UK.
      I vote for Seph-isms.

@@balovett Actually the word has Dutch, German, & Old English roots.
      Info here: reckon (v.)
      c. 1200, recenen, rekenen, "enumerate, count up; name one by one; relate, recount; make calculations," from Old English gerecenian "to explain, relate, recount; arrange in order," from Proto-Germanic *(ga)rakinaz "ready, straightforward" (source also of Old Frisian rekenia, Middle Dutch and Dutch rekenen, Old High German rehhanon, German rechnen, Gothic rahnjan "to count, reckon"), from PIE root *reg- "move in a straight line," with derivatives meaning "to direct in a straight line," thus "to lead, rule."
The intransitive sense of "make a computation, cast up an account" is from c. 1300. From 1550s as "take into account." In I reckon the sense is "hold as a supposition or opinion, regard, consider as being," and the expression, used parenthetically, dates from c. 1600 and formerly was in literary use (Richardson, Swift, Jowett, etc.), but came to be associated with U.S. Southern dialect and thereafter was regarded by Anglophiles as provincial or vulgar. Related: Reckoned; reckoning.
I knew it had English roots due to some books I'd read.
I also knew the word "reckon" here in the U.S. was thought of as one if those words only the uneducated used such as poor Southerners and cow hands/ ranch hands and the like.
And yes I vote Sephisms too 👍
