- River Dee, Scotland Fantastic little micro Canoe adventure on the Scottish Dee . we had a decision to make whether to satay on or get off as levels rose . Hard Decision.

Live to see another day, like you said at the start of the video memories with the kids is precious, a good decision, also shows others watching that a sensible decision is always the right decision. Fantastic example set with a good learning for the reasons why.

Haha yeh, cheers Tinus , luckily I had a light weight bivi bag so I got in that as well and it kept my feet n sleeping bag dry 😀. Yeh, better safe than sorry n was a great first day 🙂.

Amazing how heavy a swamped boat is, not much chance of making an eddy to bail. Glad you didn't die, its hard to find good instructors😂😂

Aye there's some serious weight in a flooded canoe and in those flows it'd be like trying to stop a double decker bus 😆.

Time for a new tent maybe , but knowing you a slosh with some hammerite an it'll be reet . Take it easy pal .

Yeh the colours are bloody amazing. The action cam doesn't do em justice. Aye Jack did a good job with thumbing lifts and to top it off my car battery was flat when he got there lol. He had to flag someone down for a jump start lol 😆 ( He weren't impressed) 😆😆.

Too right Paul, gotta make the most of the time with the kids when they want to adventure with us. My lad Jack's back up there now in his kayak making the most of the high flows.

In a canoe their are right decisions and daft decisions, from what you said about the river level on the second day, and seeing the amount of water you shipped on the first day you made the right decision. The river will still be there, and so will you and your boat.

Definitely Simon, I might get up there early next year if there's a steady forecast and flows are looking good. I've run it at lower levels so be good to do it at a high medium 👍. It was on a high our first day which was good but upto a Huge the next day . Its just hard to self rescue safely n pick up the pieces in those flows .

Enjoyed the video, It is a shame you didn't get to complete your trip, still looked good though and the autumn colours lining the banks were stunning. Right decision I think, the water levels went crazy and still haven't recovered!
Yeh cheers Paul, we'll have to nip up again in the New Year and have another run. It's a great river as you know yourself 🙂👍. Plenty of entertainment and route finding .

Seemed like a very sensible decision to me. We all like a bit of risk, but its life or death with water. All about risk/reward. Any road up, I'd have bugger all to watch if something happened to you. The 1st day was a banger anyway. Glad you both lived to fight another day. Bummer about the leaking tent too. Thanks again for sharing your adventures Rick. 👍🏼

Definitely wasn't great conditions for a fully loaded open canoe that second day but hey, the river ain't going nowhere. I'll have to get up there again in the New Year 🙂.

Lovely place is Braemar, little cafe there does venison or wild boar burger both very tasty.Better safe than sorry mate river be there for another adventure,can be very unforgiving them rivers up Scotland specially when been alot of rain.Food looked good pal and another great video.

Hey cheers,cyeh it was great up there but it's always hard deciding to get off the river. Temptation is always there to just get on n carry on but I reckon it could have got messy and the rivers not going anywhere. It'll still be there in the New Year for another visit 🙂🙂. Cheers for watching 👍

Live to paddle another day! Was the right decision Rick, even if it feels crap in the moment.
You weren’t joking about it needing constant attention either, deffo no gentle meander down 😂 still looks a good paddle.
Oh aye John, it's an ace paddle. Catch it between 0.6 and 0.8 and it's bang on for the open canoe. Pretty spicy at the 0.8 end of the scale but pretty perfect. I'll be going back at some stage if ya fancy it mate 👍.

It must have been bad if you decided to call it mate. There's river and there's RIVER! I could tell that wasn't for the faint hearted. You definitely made the right decision.
What a run though, 30 bloody KM's in a day, that's half of the Caledonian mate, wow!! Loved it pal
Aye it was flowing fast, if it wasn't dark so early, we'd have smashed 50 km easy I reckon. Was a good trip Ants. Plenty of rapids to keep your concentration up 🙂🙂.

Eh Rik that was ace,that was a call made from experience so definitely the right thing.
I did a solo round trip of 18 hrs driving 3 weeks ago as had to abort loch shiel circuit due to weather 😢...gutted but im alive.

Yeh David, its hard making the call sometimes ain't it but we know what we're doing and the rest of the river ain't going nowhere 🙂. Yeh the Loch Sheil circuit is remote ain't it. Not much help out there if you get in trouble. Fantastic trip though and it'll still be there when the weathers better. We were lucky last time we were over there n greater with perfect conditions.

percentage of being the right call and going for a swim were both the same: 100%. The Dee is relentless and in high water, there's just no margin. I think like 60-70km of the 100km total distance is whitewater!
Yeh, it would have been a long swim in cold weather and very fast water. We would have been swamped for sure. We gad a good little adventure though 🙂. Cheers Eze 👍
Pecking your own head - love it. Best to run away and live to fight another day. Still 25 degrees here at the end of October, but the UK has had one sh*t storm after another it seems. Can you seam seal the Vango or is it a gonner?
Not sure about the seam seal Robert, but I'll try it. I've had it a long time that tent, so shame to scrap it.
Aye we've had some wet weather for sure. My lads back up there with his jayak now, making the most of the high flows.
