    The greatest Character man in the History of Ventriloquism. I learned my fundamentals from him. There will never be another Ventriloquist as Great at developing the characters as him. He won a special Academy Award for the creation of Charlie McCarthy.

    And Edgar was Candice Bergen's dad. What a childhood she had. She used to tell her dad "but daddy, I can see your lips moving!". Since he was on radio, I suppose it didn't matter.

      Sometimes, Charlie would needle him by saying, "Your lips ARE moving, Bergen."

    I grew up watching Disney's "Fun and Fancy Free" on VHS in which Edgar and Charlie narrated the tale of Jack and the Bean Stalk, and they always made me laugh. I'm glad we've got TH-cam so I can see more of them.

    The things he makes Charlie say, man…. He may not have been the finest voice-thrower, but he had the BEST wisecracks and conversational skills. He really made his puppets living creatures. Jim Henson was much the same.

      Agreed, his material was the best. Paul Winchell was the most stunning operator though, view his takes with Jerry Mahoney and you can't even tell where they voice is coming from.

    I find it interesting that Edgar Bergen, one of the most famous ventriloquists in history, so obviously moves his lips while his dummy is talking. Was this show recorded before people figured out you could create auditory illusions of consonants which ordinarily require the lips?

      In a lot of puppetry the moving mouth isn't always a problem.
      Only very talented people can keep their mouths incredibly still, and that wasn't really the point or talent of classic ventriloquism.
      The point was the interaction, the talent was in the creation of a one man double act.
      But the way most ventriloquists keep your eyes off their mouths is by looking at the puppet when they're not speaking (as themselves) and have the puppet look outwards.

    • @13thcentury
      @13thcentury ปีที่แล้ว

      A good example, is Jim Henderson. He's not a ventriloquist... however, when you see his interviews with Kermit... Jim is so good with the puppet, people only notice the puppet.
      His lips move as he's not trying to hide it. But you get drawn into the puppetry.

    I believe not the greatest ventriloquist because you can see his lips move quite a bit but it was all in fun and the kids loved him.
