Sitting in my man cave watching this and just realized, after all these years I have Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead dummies sitting on shelf right behind me.This clip brought back a lot of memories and a smile to my face.
Paul got me into vent in the 50s.I started with the Jerry doll with only a string in the back then upted to the one with the headstock with the moving eyes. Later I got a more professional one made, which I still have, but these days I just make them.Hope to perform again sometime in the future but I am a little rusty now. As to Paul, he was magnificent, and ahead of his time.
Paul Winchell, was one of the best of the modern ventriloquists as well as in the history of the art form. Paul as an artist utilized his art as metaphor for man's God given gift of invention. Each of us in our own way understands the plurality of the self. As we did as children with our toys we learned as we grew to partition parts of our consciousness to create distances in our minds with which to build our castles and from these imagined sanctuaries to reflect upon our spiritual journey. Through his puppetry, with Jerry Mahoney, Paul Winchell brought humor to a staged speech act, a theatrical amusement. Ventriloquism, with its multiple 'personalities,'actually a form of self intervention, has a rich cultural history that denotes a 'complex logic' of its own. JFK said; "In life, there are but three things that are real...God, human folly and laughter. The first two are beyond our comprehension and so we are left with the third." As an artist inventor Paul generated ideas and shared his phenomenon of illusion as a way to illuminate hope by way of fun and by igniting the smile factor in the hearts of others.
Such an amazing performer!! I remember well Winchell Mahoney Time. I think I was "too cool" as a 6th grader to officially like the show. As an adult I can appreciate how seamless and inspired his presentations were. Did you know he invented the artificial heart? Yeah, he was a medical hypnotist, acupuncturist, and inventor in his spare time.
P Heresy, he invented an artificial heart; it was never successfully used. I do not know what relationship, if any it had to the the Jarvick-7, which was the first one to be successfully implanted about 20 years later.
Paul Winchell came up with different characters not just knucklehead Smith and Jerry Mahoney. Who remembers his characters "Mr. Tortilla" or Mr. Willuberry, who used to award prices and then cheat to win them back? or the adlibs like when you hear brakes loudly squealing and the driver shows up to speak before the big crash sound , he said: " I just couldn't wait until the car stopped!!!" lol
Winchell had to be the best ventriloquist of all time. This bit is pretty "clean' but I've seen others (I think maybe off Ed Sullivan or another variety show) where he used Jerry to inject some of most suggestive, risque material allowed on TV in the 50s. The way he could use Jerry's eyes and head movements were amazing. I miss this kind of talent as it's all been plowed under by the most un-subtle, overtly crude junk. See Bob Newhart for a later example of humor that managed to be funny without being crude and degrading. This stuff is demoralizing our youth.
I NEVER MISSED WINCHELL MAHONEY TIME WHEN I WAS A KID & WAS FOND TO MR. GOODY-GOODY WHO RESEMBLED LOUIE, A BOOKIE WHO OWNED THE BARAGIN CENTER; A LITTLE STORE NEXT TO THE McCOY'S MARKET. WINCHELL WAS BOTH BRILLIANT & TALENTED; A TRUE GENIUS, BUT HE COULD BE RATHER STRANGE ACCORDING TO SOME OF THE STORIES HIS DAUGHTER, APRIL, USED TO TELL WHEN SHE WAS ON KFI RADIO ON THE WEEKENDS DURING THE 1990s. ONE OF THE STORIES WAS QUITE BIZARRE. ANYWAY, PW WON A LAWSUIT AMOUNTING TO ABOUT $17 MILLION FOR THE DISTRUCTION OF HIS SHOW TAPES, BUT I THINK THE PERSON(S) BEHIND IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN SENT TO PRISON. A PIECE OF HUMANITY WAS DESTROYED FOR REVENGE AGAINST A TOTALLY INNOCENT MAN.
I’ll put the disclaimer of how it’s corny and old before I say how amazingly talented this dude was. I’m waiting for the replies from the ventriloquist community to tell me how wrong I am.
Hello Swan2612, Quick question, on these videos it says Creative Commons Licence, where did you get these videos and are you sure they are CC licence? Best, Nicol
Those arms along with his ability to throw his voice makes the mechanics all come together of a real person. Great Scott... Great Job. Why don't they do that today?
When I was a kid this whole show scared the bejeeezus out of me. My mother would put it in the TV because it was supposed to be a children's show. This stuff is right out of some astral nightmare!
Wow! That Winchell can control even the movements of the Jerry Mahoney dummy by limbs and head movements (aside from the mouth) while Edgar Bergen, the man who's talent on Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd outranked Winchell's, actually didn't often put movement on his dummies' limbs.
Adored these three, very happy memories. I am a child of the sixties, watched them every afternoon.
Saturday mornings in Detroit

Man that’s pretty cool! Paul winchell was truly gifted indeed
Paul Winchell was the greatest ventriloquist of all time! The funniest, most creative, and technically brilliant! No one since has even come close!
Jeff Dunham would like to have a word with you...
About being a spiritual successor.
Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy were hilarious.
@@TPDManiacXC626 nope. Not even close
Loved him. I was always watching Paul Winchell’s Clubhouse as a child.

without Paul Winchell, we'd not have the artificial heart. He had patented a control device that was used for the valves.
GENIUS. HILARIOUS too.
A great routine. I miss dese guys.
He was my friend and mentor!
I know Paul Winchell best as the original voice of Tigger, but his ventriloquist act is hilarious! I hope to see more videos of it

Russo Lewis OH My!!!!!!!!!, Russo... You need to stand for election and get it out of your system, perhaps.
If you're ever in London, go to Hyde Park and hold a speech! You are great!
Ditto.

Glorious memories!
Paul's laugh was in canned laughter on so many sit coms
Damn this dude's incredible.
What an amazing performance: arms in the sleeves technique of course. I haven't seen anything from him since the sixties, except Homer Winch.
Paul Winchell was the voice of Gargamel in the Smurfs.
I heard he also voiced Dick Dastardly and Tigger from Winnie the Pooh.
No modern vents even come close.
1:19 "Just call me Jaja" 😂😂😂
It is reference to Gabor Zsa-zsa - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zsa_Zsa_Gabor
From their appearance on "THE PERRY COMO SHOW" [February 18, 1956].
this is so cool!

The man was a genius! End of Report!!
Paul Winchell was great as Tigger.
2:02 - Somewhere, Patrick Stewart is saying "Hey, I can do that too!"
I love this because it’s funny

How do I get permission to use this clip in a video?
1956 comedy was actually really funny

Jerry's family still holds a patent
Jerry's family...now that's funny!
2:02 Does anybody know the name of this song?
Bye bye Blues. Here is Der Bingle and Satchmo with a more relaxed rendition: th-cam.com/video/hyjsyBs0unU/w-d-xo.html
the prior song, A you're adorable, with re written lyrics. here is mr. Sing (Perry Como) th-cam.com/video/Rkk_LhYPk8c/w-d-xo.html
How does Paul control the Jerry's arms? That is one advanced dummy!
+Captain Comics
That is someone else hidden behind them.
Charlie Moskowitz Oh,ok. still pretty cool, though.
just what I need
Some Muppeteers started out as "the left arm." Figure that one out...then wonder how THEY saw themselves "in real-time" on CCTV during the act.
Those arms along with his ability to throw his voice makes the mechanics all come together of a real person. Great Scott... Great Job. Why don't they do that today?
Paul Winchell did ventriloquism to pay for medical school.
I always liked knucklehead best much to my parents dismay
don't be smiff rules
Who's smiff rules?
1:39 so scary
When I was a kid this whole show scared the bejeeezus out of me. My mother would put it in the TV because it was supposed to be a children's show. This stuff is right out of some astral nightmare!
I LOVE this show! Although Knuchlehead is the dumbest thing I ever saw.
Jim Cornette Sent me here
Also the voice of Dick Dastardly.

pause at 4:51
the GOOPER what about it
+Joe Johnson maybe it's just me, his face looked really funny
He couldn't pronounce the letter "M", without sounding like an "N" , so he hid it in by saying "mnop" together.
Oh the good old dayx, EVIL WAS EVIL GOOD WAS GOOD NOW UGH ITS EVIL IS GOOD AND GOOD IS EVIL, STUPID HUMANITY.
Dummy entailments with a human.!
