  • Even though Bergen wasn't a master at not moving his lips when his dummy was talking, he was a master comic. This clip is quite humorous.

I didn't know Candice Bergen was Edgar Bergen's Daughter! You learn something new every day ! Great nostalgia ! Remember my dad telling me he used to watch them and Mortimer Snerd---remember him?

Great memories, a little before my time even though I was around when this happened but Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smith were the guys of my time. Loved Charlie and Edgar though too.

Charlie never tired of reminding Bergen that his lips moved.....in fact, Edgar told a story of how concerned he was when Candy was a little girl; he'd have Charlie on one knee, and her on the other, and they'd talk to each other......and he wondered if she KNEW Charlie was just a "dummy". So, he asked her one evening, "Isn't it wonderful how Charlie can talk?". She answered, "Yes it is, Daddy- but you DO move your lips a little."

Re lips: he performed from a distant stage and radio. Lip control became more important for tv and film

I just heard that Charlie McCarthy was discarded after Edgar Bergen past how sad is that.
Edgar Bergen was a great inspiration to Jim Henson the maker of our beloved Muppet Show

Steven - You heard that Charlie McCarthy was discarded...??? That's the stupidest thing I can imagine someone believing. You should stop listening to whoever said that and do some checking for yourself... There's an inter-web thing and a wiki-something available, you know...

Candice said in her autobiography, Knock On Wood, that Edgar showed her he has three Charlie McCarthy heads; the regular Charlie face, another head makes him look mean, and the 3rd has him as an old man. But she doesn't mention Charlie's birthday. I saw a piece of paper years ago that had his horoscope on it - it was misplaced. I only remember that his Sun sign is Cancer.

He moved his lips to much he was overrated. The ventriloquist now like 12 yo darci lynne not just do comedy but also sing with way less lip movement.

Edgar developed his act in the glory days of radio..in the 30's... it was pretty much ALL about the interaction between Edgar and Charlie..the reparte..the jokes...the witty one liners....the double entendres, which due to the atmosphere of the day, could Never have been said by a live actor but coming from the dummy was perfectly acceptable. Charlies back and forth insults with WC Fields are classic . Edgar Bergen continually made fun of his own lack of skill using Charlie as the medium. When Edgar and Charlie broke into TV and movies people were So endeared to the comedic team the fact that Bergen was a mediocre ventriloquist didn't matter at all...

@@samgamgee42 Right. Ventriloquists in the modern day HAVE to be good. They can’t hide their lip movement as easily with the technology we use in media now.
