Ventriloquism isn’t just about the movements of the mouth it’s also about distancing the voice of your dummy from your own. Some people might be really good with the mouth movements but if there dummies voice sounds to close to there’s it’s not really that good. That’s why people like Edgar Bergen and Jimmy Nelson are considered some of the best ventriloquists of all time.

While I'm not saying modern ventriloquism isn't funny, I really wish this sort of family friendly humor was still implemented Mr. Bergen and his crew. It'll be a while until I can introduce the likes of Jeff Dunham to my kid...
Bergen was one of the least skillful ventriloquists in my lifetime. Even at his peak, like in this clip, they were very careful how they shot him. The angles, the peculiar shadows cast by the dummy on his mouth, and Bergen's awkward head movement at crucial moments can't be accidental. On the other hand, he was a great comedian, creating unique characters delivering funny banter to his straight man lines, the best of which still is Charlie McCarthy, the naughty alter ego to Bergen's straitlaced character, both of them dressed to the nines. On radio, where you didn't care if his lips moved or not, he kept audiences in stitches. It's interesting that we still love to hear the dummies deliver their putdowns of the person who's controlling them, like Bergen always did through Charlie McCarthy. It's one of the shticks that every ventriloquist uses. I can think of one exception: Shari Lewis, who died so young and was very skillful in her craft.
