This story happened in Detroit 90 years ago. On the stage, there was a doll of the famous ventriloquist, the Great Lester - Frank Byron Junior. How did it come about? Harry Lester was born in 1878 in Poland as Marian Czajkowski. He gained fame as a vaudeville ventriloquist under the stage name Great Lester. Great Lester has mastered his profession to perfection. He is not considered "the grandfather of modern ventriloquism" for nothing. While he was drinking water, for example, his doll was talking. As Lester silently strolled through the rows of spectators, the wooden Frank was booing popular tunes. In 1924, Lester's performance in Detroit took place and Frank made the audience split their sides with laughter once again. This time, however, no one congratulated the artist after the performance. For three ladies died of laughter. The case went to court. It was Frank Byron who was accused of causing the deaths of women, because during the performance he spoke and made the women laugh. Lester was silent the whole time, as many witnesses have testified ...
What a TREAT! This is a dream come true for me to see him captured here. Judging from the telephone stunt (hilarious!), I can see where Bergen got the inspiration for the "Joe in the basement" routine. By the way, if Lester's voice sounded kind of loud and monotone it's because that was the on-stage style before microphones came into theaters, an "oration" type delivery. He definitely was a product of the late 19th-early 20th century. And definitely a class act. Thanks for this!
Thank you for uploading this video of Lester the Great! It is amazing to see him perform, since there are very little videos and pictures of him earlier in his career. I love ventriloquism and Edger Bergen is one of my favorites. So it is so cool to see the man who taught him! I love the fact that you can see his lips move. It makes it that much more awesome, because most people pay more attention to the Dummies.
