As I continue my series on songs and artists that have inspired me, I wanted to share another amazing band, Three Dog Night.
This was a band with 3 incredibly talented vocalists and one of my favorite songs was "Never Been To Spain."

For me, I was all over the map Ken, Lou Gramm, Steve Walsh, Tom Jones, Jackie Wilson, Levi Stubbs, David Ruffin, Brad Delp, Bobby Kimball, Little Richard, Jimi Jamison, Mike Reno, Michael Bolton, John Farnham, Burton Cummings, Elvis, Robert Plant, Paul Rodgers, Rob Grill, Gary Puckett, and I'm sure I left a bunch out...LOL!!
Yes, Bob. You and I share a lot of vocal heroes from the Golden Age of Rock. These are some of the classic vocalists you've just named. I'd have to say that most of these have had an impact on my style and direction, and from all of that comes each of our own unique combinations of styles. Each one of these artists had similar influences that affected them and helped to mold their styles.
For me, vocals Phil Taylor (Future Leaders Of The World) his hysterical screams, sometimes sonorous nasal singing or hoarse sound, disruptions in the falsetto it is great.
That last chorus was outrageous! I glad you put your own mark on the song.

this song was actually sung by one of the most under rated rock and roll singers of all time - Cory Wells.

Hey Ken, just found this little gem. If I wasn’t already following you, this certainly would have grabbed my attention. I really loved your version.
This song brings tears to my eyes … My Dad LOVED Three Dog Night … He was born in Oklahoma … loved Spanish black velvet paintings (LOL). I remember one Christmas, when we were children in St. Louis, my step brother had a light that would turn on when you lifted it from some thing. We three walked into our parents’ bedroom at 5 o’clock in the morning, lifted the light, proceeded to sing joy to the world three dog night style! I’ll never forget it they made us go back to bed ha ha ha ha ha ha. I realize you are showcasing musicians on instruments…. I think you should do this acoustically! That would really showcase one’s voice.✌️🤟🤘💕🙏👍🎶🎤
He did this song well. Great band. Cory Wells was actually the lead singer on this one, but "What does it matter?"

Actually, I couldn't sing at all when I first started out trying. I had no range. My tone was bad. I had no idea what I was doing. I learned. I trained. Now I know what it takes to train somebody to sing. It took me a LONG time to get it all figured out.

I grew up on 3 Dog Night and the other groups you have mentioned, and WOW! you ABSOLUTELY KILL THIS!!! Thanks for posting this!!! Mmmmh! I love the way you cover this! And the bluesy guitar throughout (especially starting at 2:00, that's, you, right?). The singing starting at 1:27, 3:04 and 3:37 especially nailed me to the wall! Really, your singing of the whole song is way past awesome!! Whoa! .... Words are useless.... Utterly useless. 100/10.
3 Dog Night put out some AWESOME hits in their heyday! They are an important part of our musical history.
I sing the beginning of it down to a T. I sound exactly like the lead singer, but only at the opening of it. I know I can get the whole song with time and lots of practice. But even I get goose bumps when I sing the opening. Always loved three dog night. By the way ken.Tampelten . You really sound super great, and your an excellent singing teacher, no more like a professor . 👏👏👏🌟🌟🌟👍😁
mind blown! that was amazing this song should be covered by more people and made into a harder rock version similar to this. when I listen to the original I just feel like something is missing like there's not enough power vocals and emotion. great job man!

Funny story love this group.....when I was younger....... me and my sister mind you we could never sing....... just not in the blood the genes etc..... we used a jump rope each holding one end to use as a microphone.. and preformed for the family a three dog night song...... needless to say.......good thing we never quit our day jobs....... but we had fun and it's a found memory we share....... I think we were probably 5 & 7 years...I can't remember the name of it but it started out Jeremiah was a bulldog..... Wow down memory lane...... I forgot they even sang this song....... " Never Been To Spain".......You do pick really good classic rock songs....... and have a great strong vocal sound......Thanks brought me back to my childhood days.......Have a blessed day.......

Wow, that was amazing! I just stumbled onto your "You can sing any song" video today and was intrigued because of the Styx reference. I really love to karaoke classic Grand Funk (Some Kind Of Wonderful) and The Guess Who (No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature) as well as Three Dog Night. I love those soulful, bluesy voices like Don Brewer, Mark Farner, Burton Cummings, Chuck Negron, and Danny Hutton. I can sing the lower register parts pretty good, but I can't do those higher parts without cracking. I was blown away by your last chorus, you just rocked it bro! Thanks for the insight, tips, and inspiration.

You're SO talented! I always thought this was an Elvis original until I heard Three Dog Night's original. Still prefer Elvis' because I felt more of the story from him.
I was inspired to become a singer (not that I am one yet) in the corniest way: when I watched Grease for the first time at about 7 years old. Then I watched Elvis perform and was hooked. I simply fell in love, and the desire to sing has only gotten stronger ever since.

Wow Ken I know this will sound corny but I was a member of the Three Dog Night fan club. Being a Heavy Metal die hard but this group is what you are saying total inspiring. "Chest Fever" from 'Live at the Forum' turned me into Fan for Life. Jimmy Greenspoon's Organ solo has to be the Ultimate of All Time along Michael Allsup fuzz voodoo on it is killer. Cory, Chuck, and Danny had a unbelievable harmonies and vocals. I have worked out some of my own extra lyrics to get more cities included plus a very heavy metallic quality for it. But the vocals remain the star because that is what makes this song shine as they accelerate. Thanks man.

Ken, That was the best rendition of that song that I ever heard!!! Way to go brother!!! I think "Golden Biscuits" was one of the first five albums I ever owned. The only Three Dog Night song I think is better than Never Been To Spain is Eli's Coming.

Awesome, Ken! I love Three Dog Night. Still listen to the old stuff. RIP Cory Wells. There's so many great songs by Three Dog Night. Going in Circles, Pieces of April, One Man Band, Eli's Coming, etc. One of my fav (pls listen to it if you haven't heard it) is Midnight Runaway.

Not used to hearing a mid and head voice with so much depth/power, and doing a cover song, so its eye opening .
Yes, Richard. Developing the upper mid voice is something most other vocal methods skip out on entirely, because it requires skill and practice. But it ties in with a powerful transition into a stronger head voice, as well! But then those other methods also skip out on breath support, so they wouldn't be able to do this anyway. These are important aspects of the singing voice. Thanks for noticing!
