That’s the High note in Heading out to the highway by Judas Priest! The 4th octave is like the rock octave in my opinion, unless your Axl Rose, then your hitting 5’s.

Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy You're welcome 😁👍 you're really an awesome guy, I also gave you a shout-out via instagram a little while ago
      instagram.com/p/BdtEX-bhETr/
I also have something to ask about belting, which I really want to learn. I can get pretty high with some vocals, which are E when it's pronounced like "met", O pronounced like "boss" or like "world", U pronounced like "bush", A pronounced like "puck" or like "cat". The others are much harder. Also I have a problem with my neck, because it's pretty long and I tend to lean it forward when I start yelling... I have usually managed to stay relaxed even though I might have times when I just want to scream because it's fun, ignoring my vocal chords totally🙄🙈... Any help? I have watched a lot of videos about this subject but they seem either pointless or I am just slow to learn to do it right...

Great stuff, Ken. I studied voice in university and my first teacher put special emphasis on anatomy. This helped my singing as I understood how the voice works. I could safely navigate my way through all styles of singing as I understood the physicality of what was happening in my body while I sang. I really appreciate you understanding and using the proper terminology so singers can begin to educate themselves on how the voice works. We have too many people blowing out their voices as they are trying to achieve a certain sound, but not doing it safely or effectively.
I am a rock singer too and all of my formal training helps me to not blow my voice and to maintain strength in the voice throughout a three hour live show. Keep doing what you do! As you say, the proof is in the singing and you are a great teacher and singer.

Within 3 days of practice and giving my voice enough time to rest after each practice and not doing anything else, I was able to hit G4 and A4 effortlessly today! Gosh it feels good to be able to do it finally. Thank you Sir!

      Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
here is my story of singing
at first i just wonted to play guitar... i wonted to be the best solo guitar player (something like slash)... and my father find me a teacher... my teacher is very good person and most patient man i ever seen.
because when i start going on his lessons he explain me everything and get me papers of chords and this stuff... in a week i could play a song fluently (without taking a secons to press another chord) and so on and on... it was about 10 lesson and he said to me "in my house we will sing to" and i begin singing with playing guitar at the same time...
the problem was i was so ANTItalent for singing ... i didnt hit a note for 4 months... i could hear.. i was thinking i sing perfect but i didnt.. Because i couldnt here...
so i build my hearing a little so i was hearing when someone hit the note and when i didnt hit it.. but it was still struggle for me sing whole song ( in my register and kids song like happy bithday and familiar) without not hiting and sounding terrible at some points..
so after i year of teaching guitar i was more and more interested in singing... my teacher made a group with his students... so i could sing with them (and play guitar) .. it was very helpfull because i could sing better with them i learn so much and progress better with them... but i was realy antiTalent for singing :( ... so it take time for me ... now i am singing for 6-7 years and i inproved in singing..
but when we sing songs we change chords that feel good for us and we can sing well with them.
but there is a problem i like ROCK and alot of rock song that i like are sing high (bon jovi , whitesnake, Guns and roses, .. )
i am low baritone i i expand my range just for 1 octave in this 6 years i am now at 3 octaves but still struggling with some notes.
so i realy wonna to expand my range and build head voice to (i didnt work on it at all :( .. )
my teacher is bass and he plays song and his song are all in low register... he once told me to sing in my own register that is given to me... all other is learned and not natural for him :/
i realy respect this man ... but i wont tu expand my range..
i think i can learn from videos because i sing for 6 years and i can hear and i know some things... if i were a beginner i probably would not even think about video learning... i heard alot of good things about ken tamplin .. and his student even sang on evrovision...
i realy wonna build my voice more and learn more about singing...

Ken is selling his online course actually free. That knowledge in the course itself is GOLDEN for your voice and understanding of singing itself! I got it for nearly 1 month actually. I will be uploading the results soon. Buy the course without any hesistation and see for your self, it's not some kind of bullshit "do like this", there is why you should do it and so great explained HOW to do it in the right way!
Totally worth every penny, even more XD I got all 3 full volumes + Pro packs - best choice.
Working on first one, bombastic boost for your voice and you will really like the course if you are into some technical part, want to understand why and how the voice and all the singing mechanism works ;)
      Cheers everyone \m/
      And many thanks to Ken!

Massive revelation for from this particular Tamplin clip: I'd never realized that there was a register crossover at the point where my standard speaking voice bridges to the 'call' register.. Very eye-opening and many years in coming! Thanks Ken!!! . I can't recall ever hearing that point before, and have been studying for a long time. I am one of those who through lack of use in that range, have a huge frustrating hole in my voice (from B below middle C, to F or F#). Well, this point you made in this clip is really taking me to task with something vital to work on.

Such a great video Ken. Growing the strength of chest voice is so important no matter the style or genre one wants to sing in. Without a strong chest voice there's absolutely nothing to work with. Some people say things like "Oh Ken only teaches belting" absolute flat out nonsense - these skills are necessary no matter what style you sing. Stretching chest voice correctly is a must EVEN if one wants to sing in a thinner or "light mix" tone.

Now listening to Ken's example in the first seconds of this video, I realized I wasn't siging with my chest voice at all, but indeed bringing my head voice all the way down to the lower notes. Now it's a whole new world for me! Gonna try building some TA muscle now to really belt! :P Thank you, Ken!

Hey Ken, I want to say thanks for all the free lessons, as frustrating as they are. I say that because without you and me talking directly I will never get the feedback i desire from you and, and to get that i need to fork out some dough. Yeah I'm a cheap ass so none of that. But i want to say thanks because even without your feedback I have been able to learn control over this instrument that is my vocal chords. Before watching these i was trying to push my chest voice into a high note and thought that my "Axl" voice was just a fun parlor trick but its not real music. Well i have relearned how singing works, and honestly in most songs sung by males there is so much head voice and mix its just insane. I thought these guys were gifted at first but now because of you and your videos i realize they are just restless and practiced. So thanks man, i think the understanding alone will help most people overcome the struggles of singing.

After watching couple of your videos yesterday, İ started belting out Starship's Wild Again. You made me realize the "correct" things that I was doing after many years of self-practice (like breathing fromy diaphragm, and controlling my breath). Since you "identified" these variables so clearly, I can now "control" them even better . Had I known you in 1993, when I quit singing out of frustration of vocal fatigue, I could have had a singing career. Before I discovered you my hero was Sammy Hagar, he seems so instinctively preserve his voice, while roaring like a lion. And I found out he's your cousin:)

I had a voice coach once but she was no where near as good as you are. Holy cow you put literally everything I have ever said to anyone who wants to sing into practice. Just like every muscle in our body that can be strengthened by stretching, the larynx is a powerful tool that when exercised can be amazing.
My grandmother was told her entire life that she couldn't sing, I simply told her that she was singing out of her range and because she had people negatively commenting, she never sang alone or to herself. She does have a good voice, it was just having to find her range. Anyone can sing. Thank you you awesome man! You are incredible!

This is one of the best exercises for me to break through my passagio and tie it all together. I find my speaking voice getting more expressive too as my head voice grows. I know that I tend to keep my vocal chords thick when speaking with my natural baritone range. It's exciting to feel things lighten up as I sing higher without feeling that straining, pulling, at times painful sensation.

You are an amazing teacher. I am at a point where I feel like I'm stagnating.
I took your warm-up videos today and have practiced with you.
    It works great
I have a very strong voice , very dynamic and sometimes I give too much than I have to
And I always made the mistake of pulling up my chest voice because I thought I have to be even stronger. I just want to sing. My mother was an opera singer and grew up with it. I sometimes think too much and my head is full of technick
Thanks for the video Ken !

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Nini, I teach you how to know all of those correct things like the back of your hand, so you don't have to think about it anymore, and you'll be able to just DO it! I bet your mother got to that point and beyond from years of hard work. I shorten those years for you, so that you can get to the good stuff! It still takes time, so you need to get started, but your voice will grow like never before!

Enjoyed the vid re the voice effect unit. As a struggling guitarist/singer (not the other way round) who has ended up fronting the band, I realise more and more how important it is to understand signing. Thanks to all the vocal coaches on line, people like me stand a fighting chance. Having discovered I have a chest voice, Mr Tamplin more so for me but crikey, he's got a higher range than I have. And about a 40 years head start:)

How does Elvis Presley drag his chest voice so damn high AND maintain that type of power ? it blows my mind, I wanna know if this is attainable through training or if it's due to vocal chord thickness.

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

Elvis had an exceptionally smooth sound that was very listenable, and still sounds remarkable on records. You can train to get closer to these qualities. Elvis was fortunate enough to have many of these qualities and to have developed them through his career. The rest of us have to work to get there, and we can get better tone, smoother sound, stability, range, and power. Cord thickness helps with the low tones. You'll also want to bring a little charisma to the table along with the vocal skills.

So do you recommend spending time on ONLY chest first? And only after however long it takes, weeks/months, to make it strong, then you can add head, and later mixed voice exercises into the routine? Or is it safe to do some head voice exercises while building chest voice? Any indication as to when chest is strong enough to start building head voice?
