- David Grunwald was a teen living in Palmer, Alaska. When he failed to return home one night, a major search began. Weeks later a discovery would be made, and it turned out that four teenagers he had been with that night, made a horrific decision over nothing at all.

It’s refreshing to see family demanding their child take accountability, and feel outraged by the evil act.
Agreed, never seen anything like it before. They know their son and that, yes, he could have been responsible for this crime.
I can’t imagine how devastating that must have been for them. And the saying is true, it’s always the wrong people who feel guilty. They’ll carry this with them forever.

In my opinion, as a parent, I see this as good parenting. Being held accountable for ones own action= love without contempt.
As a good parent you would have never brought the boy in without a lawyer, the lawyer would have worked out a deal for him to plead guilty & give the other s names for a better deal. 16 year old high boys , hopefully can be reformed. This was a dumb thing, high boys did as a dog pile fight. They may have never been killers without the drugs. Ofcourse they all need very long jail terms.

I grew up here, still live here. Super sad case, but Alaska is a pretty dangerous place. It's always so weird to hear people talking about where you live, especially in this context. Renfro was just given 75+ years.

any age but the police are required to actually have guardians/parents present in some states to look after the rights of the juvenile, police aren't required to have them actually do it though so it worked out in this case.

I grew up here and moved away in 2017. It was because these kids thought they were hard and in a gang. A lot of us believe they killed Frank Woodford for this reason too as some sort of status or initiation. A lot of crime happens in Alaska. Specifically in anchorage, wasilla and Palmer. It’s sad. I’m glad I got away.
Anchorage is so bad. My childhood friend Charlie Albright was murdered over a backpack. idk too many people here who don't know someone who is, or haven't been victims of violent crime here.

The other three men sentenced in the murder of Grunwald are Erick Almandinger and Dominic Johnson, who were each sentenced to serve 99 years in prison. Austin Barrett pleaded guilty and received a 45-year sentence. Bradley Renfro, now age 21, was sentenced on Wednesday to 105 years in prison, with 30 years suspended. His convictions include murder, kidnapping and arson.

I knew the Peterson boys since Damein was 5 and Devin was 4 or so. They lived out in Whittier with their mom and older brother Dakota. Their mom was wild, into drugs and anything illegal. The boys had a revolving door of men in their lives and no stability. She would actually tell them that she didn’t give them up for foster care because she needed the child support from their 3 dads and food stamps to survive. Not condoning any of what those boys did, but I still remember when they were little, sitting with me and my girls at the playground, eating ice cream in the sun and them being so happy. Sad to see that they went down the same road their mom went down. She absolutely knew what was going on after it happened. Her house in Palmer was a postage stamp and her chair was right by the front door. She heard everything when those boys went to her house to get Devin and Damein. She knew where David Grunwald was since the night they shot him and never said a word. Ugh. Can’t believe I knew that family from 2002 - 2012… life is unpredictable

by the timeline of events he was there for maybe 10 minutes before they turned on him. so unless "all the weed" was like half a joint, I doubt that was the motive.

Father in prison, "mother" a crackhead, raised in any number of houses with a carousel of her "new boyfriends". He is a thug and a bully and the only ones who liked him were the junior thuggies. He never knew David Grunwald outside of a "How ya doin'?" in the school hallway. Renfro and Barrett didn't know him at all. Only Almandinger did, casually. Thuggy Dominic was already in a rage when he showed up at the trailer because his "mother" pissed him off. He had said to his junior thuggies earlier that day that he wanted to "hit somebody in the head as hard as he could, just to hurt them". That was actually recorded, and played in court.
Along comes David, who none of them knew was coming. It wasn't planned, Dominic just wanted to prove his "thuggy" to the other thuggies, and David was the perfect victim. It had nothing to do with weed or anything other than thuggy Dominic's childish rage. He was the instigator, he initiated the beatdown, and Austin Barrett was the actual murderer, as he finally admitted after his plea deal. Almandinger was the facilitator, providing the hangout trailer and the Ruger pistol used the bash David's head in. Renfro was the one who suggested the location where the murder occurred.
Even if my good friends smoked all my weed I doubt I'd feel a gram of violence in my bones. especially if if I've already smoked.

( 18:25 ) and that they probably disregarded his deathbed claim that someone shot him and ruled it self-inflicted because he's native. It's insane how much the system ignores the indigenous. So I looked into it to see if there was more info and found that these guys have been very busy...
No chatges were brought even though the boy told paramedics multiple times that he did not shoot himself. He also had questionable wounds that may have been defensive. The pathologist noted recent wounds to Woodford's left hand, left index and middle fingers, and a fresh wound where a piece of flesh was missing above his right wrist, though the report doesn't indicate when those injuries were sustained or whether they were shooting-related. His mother says he ways right-handed. The other teens had fled before cops arrived. They said they didn't bring any charges because there was no conclusive proof that a crime had been committed. Apparently they missed the day at the academy where you actually have to investigate and interview to figure the rest out. Those kids fell apart when lightly squeezed, they don't seem to have even been questioned about this death. And that's not all they'd been up to. When police started digging, they realized they had a few crimes solved now.
Two new criminal cases were opened recently stemming from the investigation into the Grunwald case: child pornography charges against Devin Peterson in late December, and a sexual assault case involving a Fairbanks resident.
Two days after that, on June 29, Barrett and both Peterson brothers were arrested in a bizarre kidnapping and assault case that began in Eagle River and ended at a North Jasper Drive address in Wasilla.
Damien Peterson is serving 18 months of felony probation for his role in that case, but charges were never filed against Devin Peterson or Barrett because the victim wasn't entirely credible and couldn't identify them, Kalytiak said in a separate email.

The grandma asked "then who was in that trailer?" and the guy shut it down before giving the kid a chance to lie, because that's a police tactic. And I think he did a pretty good job of making the kid feel like a loser for thinking his friends would have his back.

I was in the same mod as Erick in Anchorage Jail 2 years ago. He was a mod worker for the mod I was in, but never heard him say a word while I was there. Another inmate told me they had him on medication that made him basically like a zombie. He had that thousand yard stare/checked out look on his face like he just wasn't there mentally anymore. I imagine throwing your life away at that age will do that to ya though.

I'm re-binging Mike's videos. After my 2nd watch of this one I have a new opinion of the motive; since the motive given seems so trivial. Someone in this group had homicidal tendencies and this weed argument gave an "excuse" for a brutal murder. Peer manipulation caused the others to aid in the event. Someone is this friend group has some deep psychological problems; maybe 2 of them do. The others joined out of fear of being caught and helped trying to cover it up.
I got to give to Erick's parents. How heartbreaking it is to know your child did something horrendous but how brave they are to face their son and let him know they're not playing with him regardless of Erick bring their son. This is tragic.
And to that kid that said 'do something' biiiiiiiiiii.......try me! I would have no problem lounging over those tables in the courtroom to ring his little turd neck. I thought the same thing in regards to the parents...good on them for making him own up to what he did. I've seen/heard of too many cases where the parents either try to cover up their kids crime, refuse to believe they did it, or tell them to keep quiet/lie. If more parents raised their children to be accountable for their actions, we'd probably have a lot fewer cases like this. A lot of lives destroyed over nothing!!!!

Being a mother to a teenage boy, it’s every parent’s worst nightmare. You always worry about who they’re hanging around, but you always try to give them a little bit of credit as your child that they’ll be able to pick good people to be around that will hopefully influence them positively. Unfortunately for this boy, these kids harbored some sort of jealously towards him (in my opinion), because what they did to him went far beyond just “being upset he smoked all the weed” - I don’t buy it. Here's a massive tip for any teenagers coming from a 27 year old: don't worry about partying that much in high school, or curfews or anything like that.
