Saskia, this is exactly what happened to one of our pigs this spring. The vet’s scraping came back negative, but I took your advice and treated with ivermectin on the ear, shampoo, and anti fungal cream. The problem was solved, and he’s back to normal thanks to your advice!

I know fur pigs can be bathed every three months . But what about skinny pigs as bathing can dry their skin.

When I rescued my guinea pig he was very itchy. I took him to the vet the vet looked at him and said he's fine. And then it got to the point where he was scratching and screaming and I took him to another vet she actually did a scraping test and found that he had sarcoptic mange. And by this time it was so bad that it was deep inside of him and they were tormenting him and he would have seizures and I thought he was going to die. It took a long time to get him healed he was hairless and bloody. Now he has long healthy locs and he is my baby and he is my soulmate. Always get a second opinion if you just don't feel right about it

I apologize if you've seen any uptick in bathing haters recently! We did a guinea pig bathing video that has been mildly popular and drawn out the anti-bath crowd. I've been using your channel as a reference for those comments. One of the commenters even claimed to know you! You are a great resource both for our own pigs and for running our channel. I send a lot of people to your videos for advice. Thanks!

Fun fact, horse in spanish is "caballo" and some spanish speaking countries say "cobayo" for guinea pigs.
Sometimes I too confuse "cobayo" by "caballo" and vice versa because pronunciation is almost the same!
Fortunatly, depending on the country people will call guinea pigs different. Sometimes it will depend in which part of the country you live!
Guinea pigs are called "chanchitos de la india" as direct translation, but also called cobaya/cobayo (edit: the difference is not by gender, this also depends on where you live!). Thanks to the squeek they make, they are also reffered as "cui" or "cuyo".
In my city, the commercial piggies are chanchitos de la india, but the wild ones that are generally grey colored and bigger are just called cuis!
Anyway, lot's of love from a south american fan!

I thought Cobaya was only in Spain. And it's used accordingly to gender. Cobayo is male guinea pig and cobaya is female guinea pig but also the plural form when there are both genders. Maybe because I'm a native speaker, it's not that hard to distinguish.

Sec Girl I agree. My kids ended up with the class pet from one of my former teacher colleagues and I wasn’t at all interested in a Guinea pig, but after a while, CoCo has totally grown on me. She has the best personality and she has her favorites in our family. She also teases the dogs because one of them really doesn’t like her but that dog is blind and it’s as though CoCo knows this and takes advantage of that fact. It’s hilarious to watch.

Hay in the UK tip.. I found decent Timothy hay that looks the same as in the video, it’s expensive compared to most other hays, but greener than any other Timothy hays sold here. It’s a 4lb bag for £9.99, by “Alfalfa King”.. Runs dusty as you near the end of the bag, but the boys love it. Totally worth it! It just seems fresher than the meadow hays and other Timothy hays, & firmer, so they’re really keeping their teeth down.
The meadow/Timothy hay mix I use for play times, make a maze of hay walls and they go nuts for it, following the path having a munch, before ramming through the hay, popcorning, burrowing under and leaping out in excitement. One of my favourite times with them!

I know this video was posted 2 years ago, but I just wanted to throw you some appreciation.
I got introduced to your channel from scotty and I'm not going to lie.
I did not expect to watch your channel every moment I get time to myself.
    Binge watch more like. Lolol.
But anyways- I want to express how grateful I am that you put this information(and more) out there for people to see.
I have 9 guinea pigs (all rescues) and I have yet to have a fungal or mite issue, but because of you. I am taking the precautions and have learned so much to ensure that my pigs have the best life possible. Especually since some of them come from extremely neglectful conditions.
You make guinea pig awareness a thing and I couldn't be more grateful to have found your channel.
Ps. You always look beautiful and i look forward to seeing what you have done for your makeup or what your nail color is each video.
    Thank you again for everything!

Back in the 90s when I was a child my Nan used to breed and keep Guinea Pigs and she lived in a flat so she used to go outside with her scissors and cut grass for them all every day (I'm British). The guinea pigs ended up losing their hair and getting skin issues and my Nan used to bathe them in a disinfectant shampoo (she was a horsey lover so she had all kinds of treatments for everything). As soon as she saw it she recognised it as sarcoptic mange mite, it was coming from the foxes travelling over the grass she cut. We know that because all of the foxes in the area had mange. This only happened like 3 times over 5 years I think. As for worms, well, even spiders can be infected with nematodes, of the tiny parasite is on the grass or hay... Well... It's just nature isn't it.
Love what you do. Thanks for sharing. I'm very tempted to re-live my childhood and adopt a guinea pig that needs a home. I just worry about how much care they need like the toe nails and stuff... Or maybe my Nan just went over the top (Probably. She lived for those little fluffy ovals).

I prefer the green fresh smelling hay like you have there, I buy the slightly more expensive stuff. Burgess hay, hop to forage and I’m just about to try hay box. I have four rabbits of my own and I foster as well, we have two guinea pigs so hay is a must in this house lol….vet recommended a mix of hay 😀 I will never feed the brown dry yuck.

We rescued a piggy years ago who was covered with "running lice". She's still with us, and is almost 7 years old. Incredible. Anyway... the remedy was Revolution for dogs, measured very carefully and precisely in a minute amount with a syringe by our vet from a regular dog sized dose.
I've never needed to give my pigs a bath except for one fella who had kind of soft poos, and would step in them a lot. Then they would dry and he would have these awful dried clumps on his feet that if I tried to pick them off would pull at his hair. So, I'd put some warm water in the sink , just an inch or two, let him stand in for a couple minutes, and then massage them off his feet.
    Great reference video!!! Thanks!

My Vet agreed that was the best way to do it, not just because I have 26, but also because I have dogs and cats as well as wallabies and possums around my piggies. My Vet thought it is a good idea to treat them every 2 weeks, as I've had 2 piggies have Sarcoptic Mites in 1 month, they were in 2 different pens.

Ivomec for horses is a stronger strength & has to be diluted to a precise percentage for oral treatment (like I do). I will try the ear method. You have to repeat the Ivomec in ten days bc the eggs hatch. Even go for 3 treatments. I order a paste from a horse supply in the midwest and it's only about 3 dollars for a measured, "gun" syringe that has about 8 doses that are huge after dilution that you could treat 25 pigs in each round!

Baths really are a good idea. We may hate it at the time, but when humans aren't looking we are secretly relieved to have the help staying clean. Especially those of us with white fur. Think about it. White fur, short legs, playing in hay, and we are suppose to keep ourselves tidy from all that just by licking? Seriously??? Have you ever even tried to just lick a sticky spot off your hand, humans? Doesn't work that well, does it? Also, you have to be a true contortionist to get all that white fur in the middle of your back. And if you accidentally land a boink on a juicy piece of watermelon, well, that takes forever to clean up without help. Trust me, I know. One of the perils of happy feet! Boink boink boink boink. JuHuuu!!!

I got a ringworm infection on my face last year. What was weird was that none of my pets had any signs of ringworm. I don't have the best helth, so maybe I was more subseptible to it?

Exactly - your guinea pigs may have been carrying the spores. This exactly why I recommend using the Davis Miconazole shampoo.

Could I use the same ivermectin drops on my rabbit’s ear every 3 months as a preventative?
I really appreciate your videos! I wouldn’t have been able to solve the ringworm issue my guinea pigs had last year without your advice! We got a negative skin scraping and were told not to treat our piggy, Maple. When her skin kept getting worse, your videos were the guidance me and my piggies needed!

Good to see farm meds being put to good use on the pet front. They are animals too. Sometimes I feel like my stock animals wind up in better shape than the neighbors' dogs and cats because pet owners wait for a vet (doing your own fecals, on hand parasite control, and feed analysis/supplementation goes a long way). You seem knowledgeable. So our family just picked up a couple of middle aged guinea pigs off CL for a $1 from a family who got dogs and wanted to move their GP's on. One of them appears to have a soft fluid lump on its rump. In your opinion, is that a vet visit or can I treat it myself/wait to see if it resolves or worsens? Location does not seem to be painful or hot. Guinea pig is acting fine, eating and being plucky with the other. We have not had them long enough to be able to tell if it is growing yet, but I am watching now.

Hi Rachel! That sounds like a sebaceous cyst, harmless and best left alone unless it grows. I have done some videos on lumps and bumps as well. Good luck!!

Good to know, thanks! Provided it doesn't grow I won't stress her out with a vet trip then.

Hi Saskia! Super appreciate your videos and advice, you’ve been a life saver for me and my pigs! How long do you keep your pigs separated after you treat them with external ivermectin, if at all? Thank You!

I use the pour on Ivermectin for cattle, one drop on each ear. Our feed store sells it in smaller amounts for the small animals. I have been told that the oral ivermectin paste, does not treat the mites or lice, just internal worms in horses. Assuming same would be true for guinea pigs? Where as the pour on or inject-able Ivermectin treats the external parasites too. I use Piperozone oral small animal wormer if I'm not doing the pour on ivermectin, but again, it doesn't treat or prevent the lice or mites.

every three months as a preventative and for treatment I believe every 7-10 days?
