I grew up in a 4-season climate (northeast USA) and now live in a very mild year round climate (southwest USA) and I've learned to pick up on new cues of seasons changing! It may not be as dramatic as leaves changing and snow falling but I really do notice the difference in seasons. Plants blooming/dying, rainy seasons, gloomy months, nights getting cold even if the days are hot, etc. IMO it's about tuning into your specific ecosystem instead of getting frustrated that September doesn't feel like gilmore girls, LOL.
I read The Wind up bird chronicle this year, it was my first Haruki Murakami and OH MY GOOOOOD it absolutely blew my mind!! I fell in complete love with Murakami's writing style, and the story was so weird and I had no idea what was going on or how was it going to end and the ending was perfect and didn't disappoint me at all. I can't believe Raeleen hasn't read it yet! I just can't recommend that book enough, it is really really great! ❤
Regarding the gamer/reader discussion, I agree hardcore gamers don't generally gravitate towards books, but they make for great romantic partners for people who are hardcore readers! Just picture it: Staying up late snuggling on the couch together, but one person is reading and the other gaming. You both have creative/imaginative minds, but are just accessing it through different mediums!
This summer in Ireland we got like a week of proper summer, except those 7 days were dispersed. I've come to learn that picnics and camping can still be fun in the rain
So cool to hear Raleen mention Una Mannion. She lived near me and gave a friend and I an amazing Hamlet deep dive before our leaving cert (final exam in high school in Ireland). (Justice for Ophelia) Her 2nd novel Tell Me What I Am is even better! Although I am biased
As a gamer who also reads, I can attest that either I'm using my relax/free time to read or to play.. the only time both worlds merge is when I'm hearing audio books while driving my truck around in American Truck simulator HAHAHHAHAAHAHA love the pod, hugs from Brazil!!
I wonder if the low sales at the event was related to it not being a commercial context 🤔At a farmers market, people go expecting to spend money. At a video game competition, spending may not be top of mind
Speaking of reading only one author… I did that accidentally when I decided to start reading Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series and couldn’t put it down and then just decided to keep going and I have read the whole thing. All 15 books and now eagerly awaiting the new ones 😂 basically from November 2023 to June 2024 I only read her books. It was thrilling!
'I don't think I could live somewhere where it's sunny all year' * Giggles in Australian * 😅 To be fair, it depends where you live in Australia... some places definitely have more a four-season cycle. I live in South East Queensland where the seasons go: hot, REALLY HOT, slightly less hot, actually really nice, one-to-two genuinely chilly snaps then repeat! Also: I would say 'Fried Green Tomatoes' the book is more of a late summer read? Can I also HIGHLY recommend the movie, which I think is one of the rare cases where the film is better :)
I'm definitively vibing with you about the plans for next year. This year I tried to follow a TBR and even put dates to each book... it completely failed. Next year I'll at most make a short list of "Books that I feel I could try next". Also, I have the goal (with no due date) of reading all of Jane Austen's novels. I have at least collected all of them already and in matching editions.
OMG Ariel, I’m doing the read and author thing, but in a soft way so I don’t get fed up. My author is Gabriel García Márquez. I haven’t read any of his since he died, so some are rereads and other are new for me.
I completely agree about not making specific tbrs, because I had my reading goals for this year split between vague prompts like, read 12 classics, mixed with more specific ones (read xyz book) and i've really found it easier to complete the prompts that are more vague. All the goals with specific books to complete just end up stressing me out when i dont have the motivation to pick them up. omg the idea of a reading holiday sounds like such a good idea!! it gives the option of not having to go /that/ far for a trip and have it spent mainly relaxing instead of trying to see new places. hmm i have many ideas of where to go now, maybe to the beach or the mountains... planning this for 2025 >u
Even out of gamers who do read, I think the majority tend to have a really different reading taste to you, Ariel. Epic fantasy/sci-fi and manga would be the most popular in that group from what I’ve seen personally. They also would be more likely to read e-books than physical books given they are already into tech stuff with gaming, making them not the most likely to buy books in person even if they find them interesting. That reading nook you set up sounds so nice to hang out in though! I would love it if that were at any events I went to
Would you say your body is used to it? I get so hot in 35°C but I'd imagine it's not that bad if the temperature is nearly always the same? (I'm trying to get mentally ready for the ever rising temperatures 🥲)
@@AbKhaosI’m someone who moved from a mild climate to a tropical climate and I did get pretty used to the heat (to the point I now cannot stand being even slightly cold). To be honest, I feel like summer in seasonal weather feels worse than year around summer because your body isn’t used to the change as much so it’s more jarring.
@@AbKhaos everywhere has air con, even the tiniest of the street stores, its a basic necessity here, but it can be pretty hard for those who are from a lower income to stay inside the house on hotter days (this week we are expected to have a 45°C day and mind you its "winter" time hahaha 💀). So especially on weekends, places like malls are packed. Just wanted to add that not all of brazil is like this, its mostly in the region where i live 🥲
@@Emelia39 thats true, here if it gets bellow like 12°C (around 50°F), its rare, but every few ears we have one cold day like this, people die on the streets because no one is used or prepared for climates like this :/
@@TheBibiortI think that’s the reason that British people couldn’t handle the 78f weather…if you’re used to the cold and have poor insulation and cooling methods, the heat can come as a shock.
I have a simular goal to ariel's biography goal where i wanted to read one nonfiction book in each quarter instead of doing four nonfiction books in the year bc i knew my brain would fail with such a long deadline lol. Also ive gotten pretty into them so ive read six but i still gotta read another in the next three months to achieve my goal lol

Ariel, do you advertise for the pod in any way on your mini truck? I was thinking that you could have a QR code somewhere next to Raeleen’s shelf or something like this 😊
Book Tag: 1/Meh, no pressure. But actually Tales of the Risen Tide. 2/Maybe Anne of Avonlea? I go with my mood, not the season. 3/Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson!! 4/The Lost World, The Genius of Judy, Klara and the Sun 5/Wind and Truth 6/Try to read only on my Kobo?(!) and buddy read more with my husband.
Ariel, if you ever do another ✨video game vibes✨ event, I highly recommend having some of Jason Schreier’s books, he’s a really respected video game journalist who writes non-fiction about the video game industry and they’re SO INTERESTING (I am not a gamer but I love getting the tea about how games are made and they’re really approachable even if you don’t know much about video games generally)
1/ Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish? I started Middlemarch… in March and I just wasn’t in the mood for a slow meandering classic but I do want to read it, maybe it will be in my winter/holiday reading list (not an actual list more of a vibe) 2/ Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year? Yes! I’m reading “Red Rabbit” by Alex Grecian to transition me into a spooky mood, it’s about a ragtag group of cowboy types trying to collect a bounty on a witch. It’s very fun and fast paced so far. 3/ Is there a new release you're still waiting for? Not really, since I work at the library I find I’ve been reading TOO many new releases since they look so exciting when they come in on the new cart! Trying to read from my own bookshelves for now. 4/ What are three books you want to read before the end of the year? I want to read “IT” by Stephen King, “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott, and “”Anna Karenina” by Leo Tolstoy 5/ Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favourite book of the year? Right now, I’m not sure, do I even have a favorite book of the year??? I feel like I’ve been reading a lot of good books and it’s hard to pick a favorite. 6/ Have you already started making reading plans for next year? I think I’m going to set an actual reading goal next year of 100 books, I had set my goal at 1 this year to just see how many I would read and so far I’m at 91. That does include some manga series and graphic novels though, so those were obviously faster reads. But if I start feeling too much pressure I’ll change it back to 1. I probably won’t make any specific TBRs, but I do want to really explore science fiction series and fantasy series next year. I read a lot of stand alone fiction and I think it might be fun to try some series!
The End of the Year Book Tag: 1/ Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish? I have mash-potatoed The Rings of Saturn by WG Sebald and I am worried I have over-hyped it for myself. It is sitting on my shelf begging to be read but I'm scared to dive in. 2/ Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year? Although The Snow Geese by William Fiennes is about the Spring migration of these birds, I am enjoying reading this book at the beginning of autumn as the seasonal transition hits similar vibes. Plus, there is a lot of snow scenes to enjoy! 3/ Is there a new release you're still waiting for? not for THIS year but I am waiting for Leena Norm's Half-Arsed Human 4/ What are three books you want to read before the end of the year? Overstory by Richard Powers; Sightlines by Kathleen Jamie; Earthed by Rebecca Schiller 5/ Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favourite book of the year? I don't think anything can top my faves this year (The Outrun by Amy Liptrot and A Flat Place by Noreen Masud) 6/ Have you already started making reading plans for next year? I want try to borrow, not buy, all of my books. My bank balance needs a break!
