Loved the ASOIAF part. I felt the same with all the goods, slowly getting less interesting. Loved the review that Ariel read out. Did Brandon Sanderson mention if he would want to finish the series? I thought he would be the one to do it, since he has experience.
I got American Psycho right 😂🎉
Off topic, but Ariel's hair is extra gorgeous this episode!
For the book truck, will you be doing...I can't remember what the word for it is now, but you know, in bookstores, in the staff picks section, you'll have a little handwritten note on the shelf for a book that's like a little review or what the person who is recommending the book loved about it? I guess a blurb? Clearly, you are the staff, but would you have blurbs from customers or friends? Like say a customer spots a book on your truck they have read and loved maybe you can ask them if they want to write a little blurb for it? i think that would be cute.
Hey guys, thanks for another delightful episode as always! I just wanted to say thank you to Raeleen for the inspiration of using books for props. My monstrous plant fell down during the night off of its precarious prop after a whole fiasco with a bat in our house the evening before which disturbed my extremely large monstera that’s taking over the dining room. (Side note about the bat: I can relate with Ariel and all the critters in an old house. It’s quite alarming and disturbing and can cause one to need therapy!) The plant is fine, but I clearly needed a more stable system and I now have the branch resting on a beautiful stack of books. Thanks to you, I now have a happy and sturdy art installation situation in my dining room!!
I remember watching a movie about Terry Fox on cable when I was a kid in the 80’s and that was in Kentucky. I hadn’t thought about that in years!
I’m amy z and I was so excited when you said there were three amys today! 😂 I totally appreciate the advice and will definitely try to romanticize my life, lol. I also love movies and love the idea to prioritize those as well.
So excited for you to read Slow Dance. I read it start to finish in 9 hours yesterday because I am a Rainbow Rowell superfan and it was a slow day at work. It was everything I wanted and more.
This is one of my favourite episodes to rewatch, I love listening about the booktruck!
Great video, love the chickens. I really hope Arial will post your thrifting adventure and house updates. Rayleen sounds like your saturday was full of fun and discovery. You all got some interesting books.
I miss your house videos. Are any new ones coming?
I need to taste this tea now; it sounds delicious. We are a UK colony, so it might be in one of our major supermarkets, as we have many UK items.
Stienbeck's The Pearl was the first book with a tragic ending that made me angry and sad, which made me hate the ending. I still hate it now, thinking back on it. I read it as required reading for school as a teen.
2026, the total eclipse will be visible in parts of Europe. I want to go see it in Iceland.
That snippet of the music CG made was AWESOME. Please tell him it gave me shivers because it was so good!
I read Everything Everything years ago when it came out and yeah I liked it, super easy to read, fast plot, I was there for it. I told my husband about it and he was like "Oh, like the movie Bubble Boy? That sounds like a complete rip-off of Bubble Boy." So it's very interesting that this book also seems like a rip-off...
The way my pupils dilated when the theme song came on at 1:25:18 - incredible work CJ!!
So happy to know I'm not the only one with a Google alert on a writer they need to keep 24/7 tabs on 🤣(for me it's David Sedaris)
Hi guys! I have a suggestion for the audio-only episodes: during the book haul and reviews sections, could you keep pictures of the books you are discussing on the screen until you switch book / subject? Sometimes my ADHD brain loses track and I have to go back to see what you are talking about 😅
Whoo thanks for sharing my comment!
I read A Game of Thrones for the first time last month, and it is simultaneously the best thing that has ever happened to me, and also my biggest regret 😅 I told myself for years that I would never read the series unless it was finished because I didn't want to be one of the legion of upset fans, and yet I caved. And now I wait. Part of me wants to read the next four books all in a row, and part of me wants to try and spread the experience out across the next decade on the off chance the Winds of Winter is released...
hmm the nicola yoon rant reminded me of the criticism such a fun age received but I don’t even think you guys ever finished that book LOL…
Terry fox was well known in the Pacific Northwest as well. Since I spent a lot of time in BC I know what you mean when you say Toonie.
I cannot wait to hear the rest Raeleen's experience with Valley of the Dolls. There could be a whole rating "things at the end of the book," since there can also be an interview with the author at the end or book club questions or acknowledgements, or a sample chapter from the next book coming out from the author and who knows what else. Personally, I don't want any of that and would prefer they just leave it out.
the Series of Unfortunate Events book with the leeches is book 3, The Wide Window! Those parts of the book absolutely creeped me out when I was first reading them also, I randomly thought of American Psycho when Raeleen was talking about the other book she got, and I can't believe I actually guessed it! I recently read 84 Charing Cross Road and I loved it, so I'm glad Raeleen now has it too.
Hmmm the thumbnail makes it look like raeleens least favorite book of the year is “by grand central station I sat down and wept”
Leeches bring back childhood memories.🪱Growing up in a rural area, far from a lake or public swimming pool, we had to make do with the local pond. You were lucky if you made it out of there with no leeches attached to your body. Good times.🤣
@@MJ-in-Canada Love this story!
@@Weasleykins 😄
The comment from Jen 😍😍😍 we need her on the podcast.
PS. Could we get an Anne of Green Gables audiobook?????
Leeches in movie The African Queen. Watch it if you haven't. Amazingly fun.
When I read your comment, before watching the episode, I thought: flippinpages6550 misspelled 'lychees'... I used to be so innocent.🤧
The first twenty minutes of this video are decidedly humorous, some brilliant storytelling. In terms of Helen Hamff - Sarah of Hardcover Hearts hosts a read-along of 84 Charing Cross Road on New Year's Day every year; a few months away, but might be something to keep in mind if you want to avoid it becoming a mashed potato book. When I think of A Dance with Dragons, all I remember is ugh. 1,000+ pages where the characters end things in the same positions as they were in at the beginning of the book. Either way, fantastic pod as always.
They have a Terry Fox statue, Downtown Ottawa as well.
Yes! Vancouver and Toronto have statues too, as well as some other locations.
@@MJ-in-Canada Love that!
You talking about the Tove Jansson book reminded me of a story in Emily Carroll's graphic novel horror anthology Through the Woods, which is one of the rare anthologies I liked. So, if you are interested, there is a short read for your 100 books.
I went to an american school in switzerland and we also did a yearly Terry Fox run through the forrest, it was great for cancer awareness!
I just finished translating my second book and I have the worst book hangover, can't focus on anything. This should be the perfect remedy
Proud of you!
Well done! I’m reading a novel about translators, “The Extinction of Irena Rey” by Jennifer Croft (2024).
Is it for language learning or is it your job? That's so cool
@@tiffanymorningstar7008 it's my job.. thanks :)
@@tiffanymorningstar7008 it's my job. Thanks
I want to see the truck
Am i the only one that doesn't get stressed out by reading 10 books at a time? Im such a mood reader. If i forget a plot because its been too long i either re-read it or "receptions it." Totally agree with Raeleens pause idea!!!!
Just finished A magical girl retires... I'm crazy to see Ariel's opinion on it
The colour is so beautiful on both of you!
I randomly found the melancholy death of oyster boy by Tim burton at a used bookstore the other day(you talked about this a long time ago lol) It’s literally the best thing ever I’m loving it so much😍I would have never known it existed without y’all! Best podcast ever💜💜💜
For the t-shirts in the truck: roll them up and tie them with a ribbon, but colour-code the ribbon according to size. That way the pile will still be neat even when the sizes are all mixed up, and you'll be able to find the one you need more quickly.
Ariel you are looking so tan! Beach Bum life must be working out, or maybe all those days working the mini truck bookstore ☀️ 😊
Great points!
This is a problem I’ve never had.😂 Authors need to eat and pay their bills and we need bookstores, both used and new, to stay open, so I buy books. It also is a very simple thing that brings me a lot of joy. Exxon Mobile does more damage in a year than a publishing house would do in three. I find it interesting that people, mostly the “powers that be,” always manage to try to place environmental blame on regular, every day people, instead of on large companies that are more responsible BY FAR, than any singular person.
Hey A and R! Do I have the book recommendation for y'all!!! It's called, "The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows" by John Koenig. It is perhaps my favorite book of all time! The reason I bring it up is because of your "made up word/made up phrase" of mashed potato book. This book is a combination of made up words to describe the humanity of experiences you've felt deeply... But didn't quite have the word for it. Here is an example which reminded me of your mashed potato book shenanigans. "Proluctance: n. The paradoxical urge to avoid doing something you've been looking forward to-opening a decisive letter, meeting up with a friend who's finally back in town, reading a new book from your favorite author-perpetually waiting around for the right state of mind, stretching out the bliss of anticipation as long as you can." A more widely known word that originated from this book is Sonder. Y'all should totally check it out if you have the chance! Love the pod. Look forward to it every week. :)
This was such a great episode! I love hearing about the book truck! You all come up with great ideas for the callers, and doesn’t Leena have a beautiful accent? I could listen to her for hours!
Ariel your laugh is incredible! It reminds me to not take things too seriously lol
Ariel, I URGENTLY need the link to those Mary Jane’s!!! The people need it!!!
My "currently reading" list is more unhinged than it's ever been. There are 18 books in there. I love Ariel's comment that it's a lake, not a hole. So I'll just continue to splash around, dip my toes in here and there. The books currently on that unhinged pile are, in order of when I started them: Let The Land Speak (Jackie French) The Diary of Virginia Woolf: Volume One 1915-1919 A Booklover’s Companion (Matthew Reisz) My Wars are Laid Away in Books - The Life of Emily Dickinson (Alfred Habegger) Reading by Moonlight: how books saved a life (Brenda Walker) The Lonely City: Adventures in the art of being alone (Olivia Laing) The Collected Poems of Sylvia Plath The God of Small Things (Arundhati Roy) Under the Greenwood Tree (Thomas Hardy) Home at Grasmere: Extracts from Dorothy Wordsworth’s journal & William Wordsworth’s poems Some of Us Just Fall (Polly Atkin) Night Side of the River (Jeanette Winterson) Words are Eagles (Gregory Day) The Bell of the World (Gregory Day) The Old Ways (Robert Macfarlane) The Year of the Hare (Arto Paasilinna) Wild Geese (Nan Shepherd) Foster (Claire Keegan)
I feel like the only person that likes summer. I get intense seasonal depression in winter, so when summer is here….idk that heat???? It just makes me feel alive lol.
