  • Rough morning, but the end result was worth it. I weight the Cummins and the 50ft trailer and cover the MPG we are getting out of this Deleted and tuned 6.7 Cummins powered 2017 Dodge Ram 3500HD with the 68RFE transmission.

    I started my own concrete business this year, I bought a 3rd gen ram 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins to do all the towing. I had that boy loaded down with my dump trailer and a load of 21AA limestone. 21,140 lbs on the scale and it pulled like a dream. Compared to the v10 f350 my old boss had, night and day difference. We would be screaming that v10 all the time, light work for the diesel. Great trucks!

    We run GM Duramax trucks, and have had amazing, trouble free service out of them. IMHO the Allison is much better transmission than the other offerings. Y'all should spray foam the roof of the shop. It would make a HUGE difference keeping it warm in the winter!

    • @Dave_9547
      @Dave_9547 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the Cummins engine is a very dependable workhorse, but the transmission (48RE I think) is basically a light duty unit beefed up internally with a bigger pump and more clutches for diesel applications. The Allison trans in the GM vehicles was designed for that kind of service. I was very impressed with what they have done to improve the valve body function and reliability.

    • @cargotoolshop5319

      The Dodge trucks behind the Cummins use an Aisin as69rc in 2013 up ho Cummins engine and is rated for 1200ft torque, and is made by Toyota, on the other hand the 68rfe in the 2007.5 newer trucks and light duty Cummins is made by dodge and is rated at 800ft torque, dodge doesn't use the Allison transmission but we all wish they did

      @@Dave_9547 the 48RE was a good tranny behind the 5.9 Cummins, easy to build, the newer 6.7 Cummins all had 6speed tranny's made by dodge or by Toyota under the name of AISIN

    • @Dave_9547
      @Dave_9547 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cargotoolshop5319 I think the Aisin transmission is an option because a friend has a 2019 Ram one ton with the Cummins and he did not want to pay the extra for the upgrade. He has not had any trouble but he only tows a 32 ft travel trailer, nothing like what the SRC folks are hauling. Basically no matter what you do, heavy weight can cause problems. I watched a video where the owner of a Ram/Cummins one ton dually twisted off a billet input shaft inside of the converter. They had to cut the converter apart to disassemble the transmission.

    Bill, I too love the Dodge (Ram) trucks, when I purchased mine I had tested the others and felt the Dodge/Cummins combo was the best out there. It's main purpose was to pull a trailer also, the engine was always the bulit proof item, but the trans went out (started slipping) at 22K. We put a ATS trans W/triple disk converter in it and never had another issue. The 46,47 & 48 trans are just not up to the task in stock form, but you should not have to spend another 7500.00 to fix the trans. Recently we we wanted to replace the old Dodge, so again we shopped the competetion and while they all had nice fetures, nothing out there pulled like the new Ford 6.7 with it's 10 speed trany. We tryed the gas and deiesel version of allmakes and settled on the F450 6.7 w/10 speed. I recently built a new shop and had to move the trailers and equipment from the old spot to the new one, and it pulled the old trailers so much easier, everyone noticed. Our race trailer is about the same weight as yours, but we just got a new 36' deck over (PJ) and we used that to move the steel to the new shop, we had almost 29,000 Lbs on the trailer alone, total weight was close to 38,000lbs total. I had no issues and the trip was much easier then the Dodge puling the race trailer, the truck just moves out and hits 10th gear and will only down shift if you slow way down or hit a huge hill. 7th gear is 1:1 so 8, 9 & 10 and all overdrive. I will alwasy love the cummins, thruth is I miss the old truck. it had charactor and with the larger injectors and trubo, it would talk too you, and nothing can take the sound of the ticking away. But for sure power, ease of towing and ride comfort, I have to say the Ford is much better. I really do not have a favorite brand, I think I liked the Cummins more then the Dodge brand, I alwasy felt the engine was king in that combo. We just try to find the best truck for the money, when it comes time to purchase a replacement. I hope yours last a long, long time. I found the week link is the lack of cooling to the trany, and weak internals, on mine. Once that was fixed, we never had an issue with it, and yes it ws fun walking up gerico mountain passing people in the fast lane, we did it often.
    My mileage was not great, the truck got on average 13.5 to 14.5 empty and about 9-10 pulling. Best run was to New Mexico, there and back over the weekend! Also, thanks for the info on Firepunk, I did not know they were into the fabrication side, will keep them in mind.
    We live in Independence, KY about 14 miles out of Cincinnati, off 75 (florence Mt Zion exit). I use Heads Up Cylinder Heads for my head work, have you ever used or heard of them? They do mostly NHRA stuff, and just moved to a new location in Dayton, OH. I have been going there for about 12 years and have been very happy with the work. I have 4 sets of heads to pick-up in hopefully the next 3-4 weeks. Sorry for the poor performance last weekend, but I think Billy would have gone rounds if he had gotten my the first. Happy holidays to you and your family, and if your ever in the area (you stopped and had supper at Texas Roadhouse use a exit from us ) and need anything, your always welcome to use our shop. I put a Oil filter relocation kit on mine. It makes it so much better to change the oil. I would lighten up that trailer some, I know when I was towing my I did not fill the water tank and made sure the crap tank was empty. The fuel mileage is pretty close to mine I get about 11gpm when pulling my 40' trailer in the hills and about 14gpm on the flat, and I also don't pull in overdrive unless the trailer is empty. I have run my share of overdrive clutches out of transmissions over the years. But I found that about 67 mph you will get the best fuel mileage at least on my truck so I set the cruse and let her eat. One of these days I will have to get over to your place once things get back to normal and swap war stories. Be safe and have a good holiday.

    Just clicked on the video knowing it was just a matter of time that dodge trans freaked out.
    It's not a bad trans design, problem is the oem manufacturer cuts cost on clutch packs and soft shifts. What the aftermarket does with additional frictions and steels and with valvebody mods is what the factory should have done in first place. These corners cut always end with your beloved ram on a flatbed aimed toward your favorite aftermarket trans shop when towing these huge loads at or above maximum towing capacity.
    To me it's kinda crazy (and impressive at same time) that this 68re and all the others before it such as 47re and 48re all based on the original 727 design. It's actually quite simple and lightweight in it's basic layout. These modern cases and internals mimic that old design going back to the early 1960s.
    It's kinda like having a muscle car era built 727 with a big ole overdrive tail section hung off the back. Slap a computer nearby to control solenoids electronically and there you have it!

    Bill, got a 2017 Laramie 3500 dually. I pull a 41 ft RV. Weight of my RV is listed as 14,200 dry. I agree with your statements about the power and comfort of this truck. Got a fuel tip for you. Check out a company called TSD Logistics. They offer a fuel card for folks that have RVs and big trucks. No cost for the card. They charge you 10 percent of what you save. I usually purchase 70-75 gallons at my fuel stops. Got a sixty gallon aux tank in the bed. Last fuel stop I made I got a $0.38 per gallon discount. Don’t take long for savings to add up.

    Bill, I had a 2007 Ram pulling my 5th wheel I got 10 or 11 MPG my combined weight was 24500 and I really liked my Dodge. I sold it to buy another Ram but could not find a Ram with the AISIN trans. So bought a Chev 3500 Duramax LML and the best Ive got off that rig id 9.5 MPG. I loved my Ram and would have had another if I could have found one with the HD trans,

      @@CleaversVids I wanted to have Firepunk do mine but they are 200 miles from me. Ended up and had the local Aamco shop do it. Can’t recommend them at all. They said they would have it done in a week, it took 3 weeks and wasn’t right when I picked it up.

    I love my RAM 3500 6.7 Cummins also, but Ignored a few skipping shifts and other things, and one day I was pulling my trailer and it didn't want to take off from a red light, and I was only about a mile from the house so I stuck it in 4-low and forced it back to the house and had the Dodge dealer send their towtruck to pick it up the next morning, and 4 days and $6849 later I got my truck back. lol. Glad to hear y'all got it tended to before it cost you an arm and a leg.

    It’s pretty impressive that that truck gets 11 mpg towing around 20,000 lbs. (27,600 gross weight - 8,000 vehicle weight). What’s even more impressive is that 454 towed that same weight

      The 454 in my 2000 Chevy 3500 cclb hated my open trailer and 3500lb street car in sw Pa mountains. The truck only ever got about 10 mpg empty and 4 towing 6000 lbs.

    When I finally cut the oil burners loose , I started towing with my 454 suburban, my normal tow to my home in another state, it cost me 20 bucks more in gasoline costs. Yes less mpg but not much more in $$. Then upon returning home , done the regular oil change, how nice to only buy 1 gallon of oil instead of 3 gallons of it. There was a time when diesel was worth it but at the pump it’s not worth it anymore

    Tell us how you like the engine brake/ transmission coordination on the Dodge. That’s my favorite part about the truck is how effortlessly it is when coming off of a steep grade.
