Playthrough Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle*
3. No glitches or exploits*
4. No Double-Team TM before level 100*
Other rules:
-- *Pokeballs & Pokedolls are allowed in battle
-- *The badge-boost glitch is not restricted at all
-- *Skipping the Rocket Hideout & Marowak is allowed
-- I play the game at 4x game speed (238 frames per second)
-- My Pokemon has perfect DVs
-- The Trash-Can-Puzzle is automatically solved so times are not affected by RNG
-- The bike is allowed (the bike skip is not)
-- Skipping the bike is not allowed
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
*Double-Team:
-- Almost every Pokemon can learn Double-Team through TM
-- The TM can be purchased in Celadon
-- Using it would centralize the meta
-- Every Pokemon would use it to overcome tough battles at lower levels
-- It raises evasion
-- It triggers the badge boost
-- Banning the TM allows Pokemon who learn it through level up to use it
-- I believe evasion is part of Pokemon and shouldn't be banned entirely
-- I don't want the videos to all be double-team spam though, that's not fun or entertaining
-- Only two Pokemon learn Double-Team through level up: Pikachu & Scyther
-- Minimize is the other evasion raising move, these Pokemon learn it through level up:
-- Clefairy, Clefable, Grimer, Muk, Chansey, Staryu
Yellow Version changes from Red/Blue:
1. You cannot use Dig/Escape Ropes in Bill's House or the Pokefan Club
2. You cannot talk to the trainers in Blaine's gym to battle them
3. Surge, Sabrina, and Blaine do not have Good AI
4. The Elite Four have better movesets
5. Koga, Sabrina, Blaine, and Giovanni have higher level teams
6. Blaine doesn't use Super Potions are full HP
7. The rival picks his eeveelution based on the outcome of the first two battles.
-- Lose in the lab: Vaporeon
-- Win in the lab and skip route 22: Flareon*
-- Win in both locations: Jolteon
-- *You cannot lose on route 22 because you blackout
Terms:
-- STAB
-- Same-Type-Attack-Bonus - a 1.5x damage multiplier
-- Stat Experience
-- The Gen1&2 equivalent of effort values. You can invest in all stats until they max
out at 65535
-- DVs or Determinate Values
-- The Gen1&2 equivalent of IVs (individual values), these range from 0-15

When you hinted at this run on your other video, I had no idea you’d have it out so quick! It is so crazy the differences between Yellow and R/B. Do you feel like your optimizations you did in Yellow helped you in this run?
As a producer myself you film everything ahead of time and at the same time. The key is how you market it. Scott probably filmed them at the same time when he thought about using Gyrados the first time
Filmed the first Gyarados video and then started producing this right after. Then I looped back around and made yellow part 2 the day after the first one went live. Then it took like a month until I was satisfied with my routing to be able to a follow up playthrough and release the video.

Finally! Now this felt like the Gyarados I remember from my childhood. A minimum battle eldritch horror that destroys anything it encounters. I have such fond memories of my second Blue playthrough ever, where I bought the magikarp at Mt Moon, switchtrained it to a Gyarados on the SS Anne and just swept the entire game, which was a true accomplishment as a 10 year old with very limited knowledge of the english language.
This video felt like proper redemption for this incredible Leviathan.

It is interesting to me how Pokemon were nerfed in regards to these challenge runs between Red/Blue and Yellow because they removed some of the duplicate moves in their level-up learnsets.
I'm going to mention this because I'm sure this is something you put a lot of effort into and not everyone will notice right away: I really like your editing. Like in general it's good but in this video I really noticed some really clever editing moves. Like in the second run especially. First wild Pokémon encounter? Straight up shows the Brock battle. It's the little things but I really did notice it and really liked it.
I’ve switched up my workflow starting with this video so that the cuts are much better. I’m happy that someone noticed! Expect this to continue. I need to say thanks to VanMan because his editing inspired me to really level mine up.
Hey Scott, Great Vid as always although I think a more appropriate challenge/test is using pokemon Red's Gyarados moveset in pokemon Yellow. Kinda like how you used the Abra moveset from GSC Versions. Comparing RB to Y doesn't really make much sense they are completely different games. Maybe one for the future for pokemon with improved movesets in RB

I really liked how you've compered between the 2 runs, it was kind insightful, and it's an important aspect of a solo run in general, that I think that needs to be more explored more often. So thanks for doing this, and I wonder if you would continue with this format with onter pokemon as well🤔.

With that starting learnset it's no wonder Blue's Gyarados had Hydro Pump ridiculously early. I always thought it was a specified illegal set GF gave it, like Dragonite with Barrier in Gen 1 or Aerodactyl/Machoke/Machamp with Rock Slide with no TM to teach it/can't learn it in Gen 2, but no apparently not.

I don't know if anyone has commented on this, but the in game time for the first run is 47 minutes faster than Jrose11s gyarados attempt. Now, I know this is far more optimized, and has the benefit of 3 more yellow attempts, but that's impressive. Even your optimized yellow time was comparable. Crazy.

Gyarados joins Alakazam in the "loses out on critical early moves in Yellow" club. I'm suspecting they might have been nerfed because obtaining them through glitches could allow them to be OP early without having to put up with the useless early Abra/Magikarp phase. GF actually put some effort to fix or otherwise address the RB glitches. Funnily enough, both were pitted against each other in one of VanMan's recent videos.
It was awesome seeing VanMan use them in RB against each other! They are definitely the best candidates for most heavily nerfed starting moves.

honestly I rarely ever comment on TH-cam and it's rarely ever anything but trolling but these videos are just really really amazing everything from the narrating to the display and all the little explanations and inside jokes really makes you feel like you are going along for the journey. I really hate emerald for some reason now but I watch all the videos just to give you more views etc I'll try to comment on the videos more but i usually watch them when I'm on the road or something but you really do an incredible job I'd say keep up the good work but that would be undercutting the quality of the work you do really it's keep up the best work

I wouldn't say his moveset was nerfed between games. They never intended you to get a wild Gyarados in red and blue and as such his starting moves didn't mater for balance. .

Always found it interesting that Gyarados had those starting moves in Red/Blue only. I guess it's because the rival can use a Gyarados.
Also, Venomoth isn't Flying/Psychic, it's Flying/Poison, unless that is a joke you are making about Sabrina having it instead of Koga.
There was an interview with Sugimori where he said that the trainers themselves were originally going to fight during battles, and that's why so many gen 1 sprites include whips. This is just a personal theory, but I have a hunch that Bruno's team is so pathetic because Bruno himself was going to be a big threat.

23:15 oh, I disagree completely: RB (US) Rhydon looks far too chunky to actually be able to move, even though it looks like it's trying to tap-dance, and the proportions are all wrong; at least Y Rhydon looks more proportionate and more dynamic, which makes it look more menacing as well, imo. I think even RG Rhydon looks better than RB (US) Rhydon, tbh.

I also love how you can follow it's pokedex as its known to destroy cities with it's rage and just fun how you can just whip out the early trainers none stop. This is why Gyarados is my top favorite pokemon as how cool it is. :D
I swear, Agatha's 2nd Gengar having Dream Eater is the stupidest thing the devs did in this game (except maybe Machoke's sprite, come on ya'll a little effort goes a long way lol). I mean it has no way of putting your Pokémon to sleep, so the move is completely useless unless your pokemon uses Rest or is already asleep when Gengar comes into battle but that's not likely. I also agree about Haunters sprite, it is my favorite Pokémon and that sprite is one of the best imo.
Hmm... I wonder how well Gyarados would do in Yellow again if it had the moveset from Red. Probably less bad? But still Gyarados is a beast. No wonder you can't get a legit Level 1 Gyarados in Gen 1.

God I hate gyrados after gen 1 until the physical special split. Before I knew much of how the games worked I played fire red and got a gyrados with lower then average special attack. I couldn’t figure out why it was so terrible. I did more with tackle than with surf unless it was super effective. Even then it was close.

Red feels like an easy difficulty setting of Yellow - all the terrible AI and movesets mean the only consistently scary thing is the occasional Alakazam

To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the end of one of Scott’s videos until this one. I always watch while I’m in bed ready to sleep LOL
I think you could have been slightly faster against Koga, and any battles involving Alakazam.
Against Koga, you used Blizzard and Thunderbolt against the Koffing. Not only does Blizzard have a 10% chance to miss, but after applying STAB, Surf is more damage and should knock the Koffing out in one hit much earlier than Blizzard or TBolt will.
Against Alakazam, in all cases, it used Reflect. While Alakazam does have migh higher special than it does DEF, once Reflect has been used, it may end up being more damage (and therefore less hits) to once again use Surf and hit the other defensive stat instead. This will not only save time, but it will conserve PP because you have to use less moves over time, meaning you lose time healing at the Pokemon Center less frequently too.
Koffing are a two hit regardless of the move selected. Thunderbolt can paralyze so it’s better than surf in that case.
