  • Playthrough Rules:
    1. Only my starter in battle
    2. No items in battle*
    3. No glitches or exploits*
    4. No Double-Team TM before level 100*
    Other rules:
-- *Pokeballs & Pokedolls are allowed in battle
-- *The badge-boost glitch is not restricted at all
-- *Skipping the Rocket Hideout & Marowak is allowed
-- I play the game at 4x game speed (238 frames per second)
-- My Pokemon has perfect DVs
-- The Trash-Can-Puzzle is automatically solved so times are not affected by RNG
-- The bike is allowed (the bike skip is not)
-- Skipping the bike is not allowed
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
    *Double-Team:
-- Almost every Pokemon can learn Double-Team through TM
-- The TM can be purchased in Celadon
-- Using it would centralize the meta
-- Every Pokemon would use it to overcome tough battles at lower levels
    -- It raises evasion
-- It triggers the badge boost
-- Banning the TM allows Pokemon who learn it through level up to use it
-- I believe evasion is part of Pokemon and shouldn't be banned entirely
-- I don't want the videos to all be double-team spam though, that's not fun or entertaining
-- Only two Pokemon learn Double-Team through level up: Pikachu & Scyther
-- Minimize is the other evasion raising move, these Pokemon learn it through level up:
-- Clefairy, Clefable, Grimer, Muk, Chansey, Staryu

    3. Surge, Sabrina, and Blaine do not have Good AI
    4. The Elite Four have better movesets
    5. Koga, Sabrina, Blaine, and Giovanni have higher level teams
    6. Blaine doesn't use Super Potions are full HP
    7. The rival picks his eeveelution based on the outcome of the first two battles.
-- Lose in the lab: Vaporeon
-- Win in the lab and skip route 22: Flareon*
-- Win in both locations: Jolteon
-- *You cannot lose on route 22 because you blackout
    Terms:
    -- STAB
    -- Same-Type-Attack-Bonus - a 1.5x damage multiplier

    out at 65535
    -- DVs or Determinate Values
-- The Gen1&2 equivalent of IVs (individual values), these range from 0-15
    Resources:
    -- Gen 1 Stat Calculator: pycosites.com/pkmn/stat_gen1.php
-- All Trainer Pokemon have IVs (DVs) of 89888 (hp, atk, def, spd, spc)
-- All Trainer Pokemon have EVs of 0
    -- Gen 1 Crit Rates: www.smogon.com/rb/articles/cr...
-- Crit rate is determined by dividing base speed by 512
-- High crit rate moves determine their rate by dividing base speed by 64
-- All crits have a 1/256 to fail, even if the rate is 100%
-- Crits don't multiple damage by 2, it's a formula based on level

A brain fart, I guess. He was using special moves for so much of the run I have to wonder if he thought he was using a physically weak Pokemon or something. Or if he misrembered Hyper Beam as having STAB (it doesn't, with how close HB came to OHKOing Magneton, Earthquake would've easily done it) or something...?

Scott talking about Gyarados not getting Earthquake was extra ironic when he forgot it can mimic it off Sandslash and make the champ a cakewalk. So just dock 5-6 minutes off the time Scott took if he figured that out.

I’m going to do another run with a completely different route. There was a bigger misconception I had when filming and writing this one. Too late in production to add it in. So both Earthquake and this other improvement will get a chance to out perform this result.

I am glad you highlighted the continual presence of the Rival's Sandslash. I think Sandslash is supposed to be his secondary Ace. A Pokemon that counters Pikachu in nearly every way, You want to use Double Team? Swift. You want to use Agility? Go ahead, enjoy the sand in your eyes for the rest of the match. Thunder Wave? Not on this Ground-type. Slash can cut through Pikachu's paper thin defenses in two or three turns and Earthquake will take out Pikachu almost immediately. If you have been relying on Pikachu (and haven't been too overleveled) that is where this comes to an end and you will be forced to adapt.

    • @TheWispGuy

If you watch at 35:15 Hyperbeam almost KOs it as is too, so going from effective 150 power to 200 should guarantee an OHKO, and with the flying typing Sandslash can't hit an Earthquake during the mimic. Nice video as always, keep going with the good work!, a couple of weeks ago I got an ez flash and tried this run in real hardware just as I got it(gba with a rom-using your guide for the universal pkm randomizer :D), so no perfect ivs and no 4 times speed, and im quite sure that i have not even close your game knowledge and optimizations, but i want to tell you some differences with my playtrought,
1 - i beat brook a level earlier because i tried to get some crits (lv 13-14 not sure)
2- i got the jolteon team for rival battles (extra exp early so less grind)
3 - i prioritize claciums over carbos to get better rolls vs some pkm
4 - i use the pokedoll glitch (my bad, i will try not to use it again, i wanted to go fast xD)
5 - i didnt use mimic at all, my final moveset was tbolt, ice beam, hyper beam and surf.
Things to consider: beat the game at 3:25 and level 59 (I think that the time is lower because the pkdoll glitch and less "bump" and use of the bike over walking normally at 4 times speed)
the final rival battle vs jolteon have 3 main benefits, 1 thunder misses 30% of the time (vs 100% of thunderbolt of magneton), 2 jolteon can go for t.wave or thunder, and t.wave misses 25% of the time (more chance to survive there), 3, jolteon is less bulky than magneton, so it can be ohko by hyper beam.
I love to play gen 1 pkm and your videos motivated me to start this kind of challenges, and i was very surprised that as I try this challenge, less than a week after i ended it, you upload the very same that I try, i love make this comparison, and i hope that i can do more challenges like this one and try to improve my times and game knowledge watching your videos.

    Hello Scott and Denis!
I'm glad I get to catch the premiere this week! I had to watch last week's video a day late, but not this time!
I've always thought Gyarados was one of the coolest looking Pokemon, but I don't ever remember being impressed by it as a kid.
I'll be curious to see what it can do in your expert hands!

    How bad could Gyarados be?
1:20 Oof, I never knew that. This is gonna suck. .-.
1:47 Imagine the look on the Lass's face, since she could've taken down a behemoth like Gyarados.
12:00 Okay, I know I saw the PokeManiac's art in the Nidoran run video - unless it appeared early, I may have forgotten - but I think this is the first instance that the Status Condition Jr. Trainer got artwork! (Unless I'm wrong, correct me if so!) I also never commented on it before now, but I love that the Selfdestructing Hiker is holding a bomb! Sarina has done a great job on all of those pictures she's drawn for your channel!
13:32 Although it would be incredibly silly, its fins could function for Wing Attack. XD
16:42 Oof, what a turn around... You almost had Erika too!
21:50 And I thought Gyarados would breeze through this fight... At least the second attempt went better.
21:21 Okay, those little edits made me chuckle. XD
48:06 Pretty good run of Gyarados! If that's foreshadowing to a Red/Blue run, I'll be looking forward to that!
    BONUS
50:49 Okay, the Ice cream mistake was pretty funny. XD

Ah yes, everyone’s second favorite Pokemon that should totally be a Dragon type.
I’m predicting that Gyarados will start a bit poorly, due to poor level up moves and the Slow growth rate, but will catch up once you start getting TM’s, especially since it’s great stats were even better in RBY. Though not having a decent buffing move will keep it from being top tier.

I've wanted to add opponent team, a tooltip describing the trainer (items, ai, notable facts), the Pokemon's movesets, and their stats. I wanted to do this in August 2021. I implemented it a bit in December 2021/January 2022 but I didn't like the aesthetic and felt it needed a visual over haul. I'm working on re-implementing it but other things like finishing the videos on time have taken priority.

I loved gyarados when growing up. It was my first favorite Pokémon and dethroned much later only by suicune. Anyways I always belly-ached about how it didn't get dragon typing too but supposedly Japanese see dragons as creatures of honor at least within the title dragon. So because gyarados are so known to lose control of their tempers they are demoted to water/flying instead of water/dragon.

For your considera tion: 4x weakness is definitely a reason to delay fighting Surge, but 2x weakness isn't always. Water types often (not always) have very good special. I was talking to someone about this when they were surprised that Raichu lost to Vaporeon in a Gen 1 battle. I wasn't surprised. Vaporeon has HP, Special, and to a lesser extent Defense. Raichu mostly has speed.

  • @dustinarnold5569
    @dustinarnold5569 ปีที่แล้ว

Really should have mimicked EQ on the sandslash for the champion fight. Moveset would be mimic (EQ), surf, thunderbolt, hyper beam. The blizzard for exeggutor wasn’t needed because good AI would just use leech seed and it would take a bit to t bolt/hyper beam to take it down but you wouldn’t lose to it. Then you’d have coverage for everything else for the easy win. Otherwise great video as always

  • @acumenium8157
    @acumenium8157 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Mimicing Earthquake in the Champion fight would've made Gyarados win it first time. Hyper Beam almost one-shotted without a crit, and Earthquake will be 50 BP stronger (100 * 2 = 200 vs. 150 Hyper Beam). It also eases RNG massively against Exeggutor since you no longer waste a turn against him Mimicing Hypnosis.
Basically, think of it like this: worried about Sand Attack? Valid, but it's less run ending overall than missing Hypnosis.

    • @skeetermania3202
      @skeetermania3202 ปีที่แล้ว

Sandslash doesn’t even have Sand Attack in the champion battle, so even that’s not a valid concern.

Hey Scott, as you get through the dex of gen 1 I've been having bets with myself as to who will be quickest and earn the top tier spot. Contenders are poliwhirl (amnesia will be huge), mewtwo obvs, although it learns its best moves too late, and mew. On watching this though dragonite has jumped, has a much better solution to brock and the same movepool with better stats. Lorelei may be a problem though! Looking forward to seeing them all, keep up the good work!

For Dragonie, starting with Wrap slows it down a ton, and there's nothing great to take on Agatha. It's good but nowhere near the top unfortunately. Starmie will be good but its Special might be a bit too low.

  • @shadowtitanx3962
    @shadowtitanx3962 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ah Gyarados. Or, should I say "Water Onix".
In all of the Generations, Gen 2 Gyarados is the worst version sadly due to not having any good Physical coverage options and the Special stat split happening, dropping its 100 Special Attack down to 60.
But, past that, Gyarados is a powerhouse in any other Generation, even in Generation 1 due to its solid Special stat and wide coverage. Especially Dragon Dance, move coverage options in Power Whip for Rotom-Wash (Yes. It gets that in Gen 8), Stone Edge for Zapdos, Earthquake for any grounded Electric types, Bounce for Flying STAB, and Waterfall's 20% Flinch rate in later Generations.

Gyarados is a flying type at all is because it it was a Dragon or even a pure Water type Game freak thought it would be too overpowered. Especially since you can get one early on.
But on another note, I love the fact that in PLA you can find a flying Gyarados.

I find it interesting that despite Yellow being harder than Red/Blue both from the learnset nerf and the Elite 4 having better move sets, you still performed so well with only 11 minutes behind Jrose110's Gyarados run, and that is without an optimal run yourself. Dragon Rage alone would have trivialized most of the early game.
