1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, save states, or RNG manipulation
4. No evasion moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- *In gen1, evasion boosting is allowed if the Pokemon does it through means other than learning the move by level up or TM. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed. (This exception is to keep ranking consistent with my legacy videos.)
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons all my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- All in-battle glitches are allowed in generation 1
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1, banned in gen2, and allowed for bypassing terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
-- The ability Pickup can only be used if the starter has it

Obviously don’t overdo it yourself. Whatever you as the creator are comfortable with. This is just one man’s personal opinion.
I actually really like that you include random trainers it adds more personality to the videos. First play throughs are more fun & exploring while secound+ are more business & optimising both entertaining.

Careful! It looks like you might be falling into the 'Hypnosis trap' with Ice Beam, where you prioritize that potential freeze a bit too much. It looks like this mostly affected the first playthrough, but just something to keep in mind for the future!

Finally! My favorite line of Pokemon!! Dratini and dragonair were so weak in comparison that when I finally got a Dragonite with raw power and huge move pool I was hooked. I'd have preferred a less pudgy dragon look but I always thought it looked cool. Plus PINK SHINY! Perfection.

That first Lorelei battle was sweet! Crazy how you have all that trouble with the Rockets just to clear her by the grace of RNG.
My favorite line is the dratini - dragonite line. I adore them. Close second is articuno. Mimikyu and electross are in my top 5 forsure.

I think that's because by design the player was not supposed to have access to Dratini this early so the devs didn't think this through.

Dratini is such a cute noodle! I love Dragonair the most, but I’ve always thought that Dratini is just adorable! I kinda miss its Red/Blue sprite tbh
I won't be surprise if Dragonair also has a harder time whenever it gets a turn. I find it ironic that the first stages of all pure Psuedo Dragon mons are cute, have access to strong TM moves or movesets but extremely weak. It's weird but it makes sense.
The problem with pseudo Legendary pre-evos is that their stat distribution and over all stats aren't typically great.

Dratini was so super adorable, especially whenever it was one shoting lance's entire team😂.
I really liked the smart and optimal usage of warp and thunder wave, up until the mid game. By the way, you can do the same in gen 2 with finches from twister, it's really helpful for a frail pokemon like Dartini that is in the slow level up group, and needs every exp it can get, to survive most trainers in the mid game. 🤔
Most of it's resets in the first run were due its low speed, with paralysis or burn or poison that would ruin it's plan to win. It especially was really funny with warping lass. It was as if you were both fighting on who would be faster, with the help of 2 glitches 😁,that was the best part of the run for me.
And yeah as you've mentioned before only the jugglers and Agatha are capable of switching out pokemon, but they are really random about that. I think that was saving you in the second run in a way, because if dartini is inflicted with status, Agatha becomes really difficult, that's it was a really smart move to have substitute (that was funny Agatha's hunter was hitting itself with confusion while you were having the substitute on😂).
Anyways, that was an absolute awesome run, the little snake dragon is really proud of you, well done 😁. Keep it up! 👏👏👏
Gotta say, while its repeated i believe its useful to speak about important trainers in each video because of the potential for new people as well as who could complain about hearing your voice for longer

The game beeing nice was a neat comment for people that are watching instead of listening. I actually freaked out once for a second while driving and having the champion battle on screen with the flashing lights.

I have an idea for a vs video for gen 3 when ever you start doing them is whalmer /whalord vs skitty/delcatty. (Reason why is as you know about the meme of 🐳 Lord being the biggest pokemon being able to breed with the smallest pokemon skitty that are in the same egg group and i think it could be a funny video (maybe an april fools one).
I hope this little guy exceeds your expectations, dragonite is probably my favorite gen 1 pokemon so let's hope dragonite jr can put up a good performance

I caved and got the old PKMN games I wanted before the eshop goes down. It was first time playing, and the wrapping lass actually nearly took out my entire team! I wasn't sure if it was her or not and didn't save beforehand!
Yeah, she's quite scary if you're not prepared! Probably because she's one of the earliest trainers with 4 Pokemon and they all synergize together quite well.

So you see, while I see the point where the person felt that the (W)Rapping Lass was taking too much space, I rebuke saying that it's charming, it's "your thing", like, giving personality to random trainers is something that I find endearing.

All Pokemon games calculate damage by flooring decimal points, so damage rounding thresholds exist even today in SV.

Is there a difference in the freeze rate of icebeam and the paralyze rate of Body Slam? If not, why not use Body slam on the arbok in the hard Team Rocket fight since your attack is still higher than your spc and arbok has similar def and spec? Although I'm not doing all the math, just a curiosity.
10% freeze - gives free setup
30% paralysis - no free setup.
I figured if I just froze it was an instant win.
Kingler is a weird one. It has amazing attack but, because it's gen I, all of its stab moves use its awful special instead. Even with stab and an increased chance to crit, it's probably still better to use the stat that's almost 3 times higher. Especially when you factor in the 15% miss chance.
Didn't notice if you mentioned this, but for slow growth rate pokemon, would it be worth fighting everyone on the S.S. Anne?
Sometimes, yes. Didn't need it this time. But for very bad Pokemon, like the Nidorans, fighting trainers on the SS Anne is worth it.

Love the Sandy art! As for the notable trainer criticism, I enjoy them still, even when they aren't a threat! Maybe their video presence less in duration when they aren't a threat is fair, but not enough to just outright skip them IMO. At least for first attempts.
I had up to a Dragonair in a nuzlocke run, sadly never reached Dragonite before the run was abandoned. I ended up using Surf and Slam due to tm limits, but at least I could have deleted Surf later since it was fire red.

What kind of moves trigger the speed re-cut growth was triggering?
Anytime the opponent's Pokemon uses a move that alters it's stats (not yours). So if it setup with Swords dance or double-team or something like that.

Thinking about the flashing lights moments - if each flash is a set number of frames between black and white that doesn’t vary (and I don’t know if that’s the case), would there be a way to drop half of the flash frames during editing to use only the black (or only the white) frames?
It doesn’t work out nicely like this. Because there isn’t frame synchronization between ObS and the emulator. So there isn’t a way to do what you suggested without brute forcing the edit.

Unoptimized: It did some ten minutes better than I predicted which is nice I suppose.
Optimized: It has far less resets, but somehow I feel like the unoptimized run was more impressive regardless of all the resets.
Yeah, the optimized run didn't feel particularly good this time. I think if Agatha wasn't so awful it would have looked better. I'm quite happy with the route though.
I feel that the unoptimized speedrun was somehow luckier, given the Swift crit on Sabrina and muscling your way through Lorelei through what should have been a loss.

I didn’t keep my bade boosts, I kept the speed modifier boosts from Agility. Stage modifiers aren’t reset.

Quick question Scott, if you have a moment.
I've been doing a Crystal playthrough with Electabuzz. He's mostly great with the elemental punches and Return (since both offensive stats are decent). Bruno's Machamp is a challenge though. Electabuzz can't one-hit without a crit, and he has no setup or status moves pre-Kanto, save for Mudslap.
Am I right that Headbutt is the best bet here? Between Crosschop's 80% accuracy and the 30% flinch chance, I have a 44% for him to not hit. Is there a better way?
Swagger could get a very clean win. He can still miss, plus he has to get through the 50% chance to hit himself. If he does, you probably KO with your next hit. Plus, I really like the idea of Electabuzz using swagger. Downside is of course that you probably lose if he does hit.
I think Headbutt is a decent choice. I assume you're calculating the damage range on Thunderbolt including the Magnet (obtained from Sunny just south of Ecruteak city).
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Yes I was, and that's clever! I think I wrote off Swagger earlier because I didn't want to be stuck with it, but Headbutt gets me through the gym challenge. So I can just switch to Swagger for Bruno and teach Return over it. Thanks!
30:38 would an option be to make a custom ROM where every member is fainted in all slots but the 1st? That way you don't have to fight with them in a situation like this, neither will you be affected by roar/ww. I don't think it's considered cheating either since an alternative is to faint them manually or placing them in the PC; it's really more a QoL kind of er thing.
This can just be done with gamehook and javascript. Could implement it right now. I don’t really like doing things like this though. I feel I change enough with the game already so I don’t want to add any more. Especially for consistency this far into filming the series.
My fav pokemon is my level 100 shiny pink Dragonair named Milkshake (cause she is the color of a strawberry milkshake). I love her so much

Don't agree about the skipping the wrapping lass etc comment if they're too easy. The fact your videos are a bit more fleshed out makes them better than most. Mahdrybread skips/skipped so much it seemed more and more apparent that he has no interest in the videos anymore.
Jrose started formatting his videos to be just gym, gym, gym and they ultimately became repetitive and you barely can comprehend the differences between pokemon.
You and van man have a better flow and show more content which somehow makes it feel more varied

Hey Scott! Are you tracking your Pokemon's final stats or have access to that data by chance? Think a great finale to this entire playthrough series would be to have every pokemon, with their final stats and move pool, face off in a massive tournament to crown a gen1 champion. Pokemon Stadium would be a super cool venue if you can get/have a ROM

Alright alright I know what you're going to say but
The early game will be a slog with wrap and the bad stats, but with water, ice, electric and fire moves yo learn and an relatively early bubble beam and tbolt should help a ton, lucky drat resists both water and electric. And once all those coverage moves are obtained stats should be deceptive because you get access tp badge boosts and that even fixes your bad speed which seems most mattering. Only three tho, agility is not the best

What editing software do you use?
Premiere Pro, I'd suggest Davinci Resolve though, I'm not a big Adobe fan. Over priced, subscription, and it seems the developers don't care. If you need photo editing and vector graphics the Affinity products are quite good and they are one-time purchases.
Where do you reckon a Pikachu with Fly would end?
Lower than surfing Pikachu. Flying type moves aren’t as good and Fly is fairly slow because it takes two turns.
