- A lot of factors go into FROG FISHING: Rods, Reels, Hookset, Stealth, Casting techniques, tides, cloud cover, and more.
In this video, I explain how I approach frog fishing for Snakehead and Bass while sharing the water with folks who joined us for our Legion of Anglers meetup at Mattawoman Creek.

All I've ever used is Ribbit Frogs on top or just sub surface. The first Snakehead I ever caught was in Mattawoman, it was 14 lbs. I told people for years they would grow up to 20lbs. Sure enough they did.
I haven't broke my 14 lb record yet, but I will.
I live in Port Tobacco so fish Mattawoman most often.
Ribbit is a classic for em. One of the first lures i reach for down on Mattawoman.
I fished pro/am Bass Tournaments for years from my time growing up in California to 30 years out here. I got bored with the small Bass so quit about 10 years ago. Then the Snakehead arrived. I have been Kayak fishing for them ever since. There is nothing like catching them non top water.
💯 agreed. If I have to drive past snakehead waters to get to any other kind of fish, good chance I’m not making it to those other fish 😏
@Kambotroutfishing 9:24 love that sound!
I need to make a video of nothing but snakehead “popping” topwater baits. And then watch it over and over again 😁
Great videos. Just started snakehead fishing. Did you go towards the potomac or the opposite way into mattawoman where it narrows. I've never been here and I'm going next week.
@@MichaelVonEerie hey Michael. In this video I went just downstream (toward Potomac) to hit this area. Good spots up and down though. Key is finding the pad fields on a high tide and then targeting current breaks during outgoing tide.
Frogs are my favorite way to fish bro! The strikes are so sick
Whether it’s a straight blowup or they “shark” and charge it, it doesn’t get better than frog fishing for me 👊
Thanks for the Video
Dreaming of Summer now
Am going to try again for a January Snake this week
Fingers crossed
You got it, Stu 👊 And good luck! If I could go, I’d be going tomorrow. No doubt. Really think we’re gonna see some caught tomorrow
Good job man I know the feeling having them miss over and over there. Caught some giants out of Mattawoman this past summer. I tend to do best with 2.25” frogs there. I think the pressure makes them pretty finicky on eating the frog.
Thanks brother. I don’t fish Mattawoman nearly enough. If it were closer to me, I’d spend a lot more time there. Downsizing the frog is a great idea 👊
I'm liking that left hand real bait caster. Where can I pick one up?
Got mine at Angler’s Sports Center in Annapolis, MD 👍
Hey thanks for the video. What time of the year were you fishing in? You are dressed warm 😊
Hey Sameh. This was late August, but the clothes I’m wearing are designed for fishing. Thin, durable, and very breathable. Keeps the bugs off and keeps me from getting sunburns 😏
@@KambotroutFishing Okay, that's what I thought also. you just looked to happy to be in the heat this is what threw me off 😁
We had overcast skies too, so that helped. And near zero wind, which makes sight fishing them so much easier. Good fishing conditions put a smile on my face without fail 😁
Question for you @Kambotrout Fishing ....when retrieving the frog....do you prefer a slow popping retrieve or a steady reel in ? Ive seen guys burning the frog in and that just doesn't look right to me LOL
Great question. It sometimes depends on conditions, but here’s a technique that may help you.
Start with a slow to moderate, steady retrieve to trigger movement from the fish. They may take it on that retrieve, but if not, then follow up with a much slower, stop and go retrieve. It’s essentially a way to search for the fish, then follow up.
@@KambotroutFishing Thank you Kamboooo! ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻
How about fishing for Snakeheads during the winter. Like today January 16 with 50 degree temperatures. Same creek I fish at and have never caught a Snakehead.
If I could go, I’d be going fishing tomorrow from around 11AM - 5 PM. I guarantee that if I could go, I’d be catching em.
If you go, target areas that were giant pad fields in the warmer months. Then target the edges of those pad fields, because those edges should be dropoffs.
I recommend the eastern shore because it tends to warm faster, but even western shore waters are likely to produce a couple fish.
Thanks for another post to get us thru the winter. Question for ya, anywhere to get those Reel All-american curlys you talked about last year or so? Been trying to track some down.
You got it brother. And yes, there is a way to get them, but let me work on that contact for you. I’ll post it here shortly.
Here it is: www.fisholdskool.com/collections/predator-series-saltwater-soft-plastics/products/curly-frog-predator-series

@@KambotroutFishing Gentleman and a scholar. Thanks!
Awesome stuff! It seems like we’re gonna have a nice 3 day streak of warm weather this weekend. My buddy and I were thinking of going to Mattawomen or Blackwater this Saturday, what would you recommend for this time of year?
Thanks Nick 👊
For this weekend, I’d recommend blackwater. It tends to warm much faster then other waters, so snakehead should be more active there than elsewhere.
What may hurt us the end of this week and into the weekend is the wind. Even with good air temps, the water won’t warm as quickly with all this wind blowing and constantly cooling the water.
Still worth a shot IMO, but I wanna give you the my full and honest assessment too.
@@KambotroutFishing yeah the wind has been crazy lately! We’ve been cooped up all winter so we’re ready to do some fishing. Appreciate the advice!
Also, don't be afraid to downsize lures early if you get a couple short strikes or misses. The big ones will still hit the small lures.
That’s usually my go-to move, but I wanted that “metal tinkling” sound from those Teckel Honker feet. And it casts a mile in those big pad fields
@@KambotroutFishing I feel that. I've started keeping some split shots in my frog box to put inside the frogs. Adds weight to both cast further and make more of an impression on the mats. The fish seem to follow it better. Plus a little rattle.
@@joshbfishing4902 I could see that being a very good idea, especially for thick grass
Did ypu put in at Slavens?
Yessir
I miss frog fishing. Screw winter
PREACH brother 🙌
Brother, I've watched a hundred of your videos and I've been out with you more times than I can count. I think I'm just now realizing one of the things that makes you different: Your head is ALWAYS up. When you're out fishing, you're out fishing. Constant scanning. Not looking at your phone. Not fiddling with your gear. Eyes out at all times, scanning... scanning... scanning.
Being aware of everything going on around us when we’re on the water is so important. Catching the slight movements and noises around us can be the difference between catching a fish and never even knowing it was there.
Maintaining that attention is much easier with positive feedback though 😜
When the fish aren’t cooperating, that’s when you really find out how much self discipline and focus you can muster - and I often fail 😏
Don't let him fool you. He has x ray glasses, a sixth sense, and a way of seducing the fish into biting with his sweet talking. Fish bite just so they can meet him.
When fishing together Countless times he will say, did you see that bro. And usually my answer is no I was looking at the clouds or that bird, or a squirrel. I'm easily distracted 😁
Snakeheads Jesus with the TH-camr luck lol.
Always 😁😂
