'PLA Air Force Is Being Built For Strategic Coercion,' Say Former IAF Officers

  • The PLA Air Force is being modernised very rapidly and is being used for strategic coercion. It is inducting long range vectors, depending upon no-contact warfare strategy. India needs to be not only aware of these changes in the PLAAF but also take countermeasures although the Indian Air Force is still ahead in terms of skills and experience. India needs to make up numbers quickly if it needs to match the combined strength of China and Pakistan, Air Marshal Anil Chopra (Retd) Former Air Officer in charge Personal and Air Marshal Anil Khosla (Retd) Former Vice Chief of the Air Staff told StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale in this edition of Strategic Insight in association with USI, India's oldest military think tank.

Air Marshal Khosla is very astute and more specific in his Analysis of what China and it's might is about. He seems to have analyzed the case on hand in a militaristic approach and not merely patriotic jargon without a strategy. Hope the experts are listening. This is the time we have brilliant serving officers and a Fantastic think tank in the ex officers. A combination of both will be lethal for the opponent. Thank you for being the well read moderator and interviewer.

February 27'19,when Pakistan Air Foece, (PAF), aircrafts intruded into India, jammed radars & communication system of Indian Air Force, (IAF),shot down a MIG-21 & SU-30,without a potent challege & with complete impunity bombing around key Indian military installations, in broad daylight, exposed how weak, unprofessional, untrained ,lacking in skills & air war expertise, IAF is !
IAF is in no position to take on PLA air force & will be thoroughly trounced by the Chinese.

Good to know strength and weaknesses of our IAF. To be able to conduct such open fruitful discussion shows strength of our democracy (our both northern neighbor envy this).
CCP only wants to create a standoff (without leading to war) and will never settle border issues. PLA agenda is to keep indian borders destabilise, for years CCP has been successfully doing this. Now time has come Indian Govt takes step either MEA sort it through diplomacy (which will not happen) or give powers to Northern Command to deal with it (like CCP has done).

@Bruce Gilder This would make sense. Sending fleets of bombers in is obsolete I believe because of missile technology. They have lasers with capabilities we really know nothing about because they don't want to show their hand. Man's genius for self-destruction knows no bounds.

We have produced tejas not bcoz of our government but inspite of our government. So lets not degrade that achievement. Its the learning out of that project that we can implement in future provided we act in agile manner i.e. privatization, increasing the defence budget, investing that budget in our own RnD rather than buying from foreign

We have to thank the Congress regime for this disastrous state of affairs of defence equipment. How on earth did they expect India to defend its borders with Technologically obsolete equipment and no strategic planning. I guess they were planning to follow Nehru’s defence doctrine of taking down the pants and bending. India definitely deserved better.

IAF's fighter aircraft requirement was calculated many years back based upon the kind of fighter jets available then and other defence/weapon systems available then.
Today, the fighter jets are much more advanced. The radar systems are much better, AWACS and satellite systems are available. We have the entire range of cruise and ballistic missiles.
In view of the above, I wonder if we can reduce our squadrons sanctioned strength. Of course, the enemy capability and deployment has improved too. I believe, there could be a scope for a review.

If we prepare two front war, we need minimum 42 squadron and we have only 29 squadron and after 5 year number going more low

    • @indianmilitary
      @indianmilitary 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

but in 5 to 10 yr - the number of squadrons can go up 9 to 13 to 42. Remember, Chinese still use their mig 19s and mig 21s to show huge numbers. So, IAF mig 21s (3 squadrons) or jaguars not going to go away until Tejas mark 1a and mark 2, su30s, mig 29s and Rafale adequate numbers come up. In a decade, we are looking at more than 42 squadrons without retiring mig 21s and jaguars. Thanks to proactive steps taken by the present government. Moreover, we don't have to match air craft for air craft because geography greatly limits Chinese PLAAF in himalayas especially Ladakh

Air Marshal Chopra's assessment was sobering to say the least.
    Just some armchair thoughts:
1)JASDF Eagles are being worn out by constant scrambles(This is us in the future)
    2) The USAF is gearing to *defeat* a peer adversary.(We are still preparing for a 2 Front war, Well said by Air Marshal Khosla)
3)By 2030 they(PLAAF) would have triple digit VLO platforms including heavy bombers
4)We will have zero VLO platforms by 2030.
5)F-35 capabilities as shared by US TPs/Analysts are scary in the best of times and China is preparing heavily.
6)Any more foreign purchases will be instant chaddi uthrao for politicians(Competing with Saudi Barbaria for the tag of "imports khalifa" will be a disaster)
7)Unmanned combat systems is another big shunya for us, maybe like last year we will send uber expensive to fly Su-30s to take out Wing Loongs/Monkey model Wing Loongs.
All I see are questions and no easy answers.
Vitta Mantri Nirmala Sitharaman needs to pull off a miracle and EAM Jaishankar needs to bide us time.
RM can still twiddle thumbs and issue RFI for RFP for RFQ for Alphabet Soup.

Akki Rotti Sorry. Ever heard of limitations of PLAAF in ladakh? All these years, whiners said, we don't have enough fighters. Now they are whining there is no bombers. Why do we need strategic bombers for? Is going to bomb beijing?. How effective that junk H6 bombers can be without getting shot by IAF? Can they shoot and scoot in a full blown conventional war? No way
Moreover, squadron numbers would improve significantly in next 5 to 10 yrs (even more than 42). Why these retired experts not discussing about usage of mig 19s and mig 21s by PLAAF? I am sure they are going to whine about Mig21 bisons for sure. Are they pitching in for more Russian junk like bombers? Frist comment itself exposed these fellows bitching and whining about Tejas. Don't they know that Tejas production is being ramped up significantly by HAL by setting up a second plant ? I can guarantee that they don't have any clue on the number of surface to surface and cruise missiles India has in its arsenal either.

    • @gurusastropalmistry2214
      @gurusastropalmistry2214 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@indianmilitary you cannot rely on effectiveness or ineffectiveness of their bombers or jets. The fact is most of our jets are of Russian origin and the chinese have reverse engineered and employed 1000s of Russians to develop their aerospace sector. They also have large numbers and can therefore saturate our airspace. We dont have an effective air defence system. They have s 400 already operational.
Lets be honest, air chiefs and officials cannot do much if the Govts dont sanction funds. They were forced to work with cheaper and easy to accquire Russian jets and tech becz Russians gave it to us at very easy terms and conditions.
Chinese jets may not be high tech. But we too lag behind. Therefore, the only solution now is to firmly allign with the US and shun our good for nothing non allignment policy. We would have surpassed Japan, S korea and Taiwn had we joined the US in 1960s.
The very fact that B2 bombers were placed shows that US is serious about Indo pacific and India's security. The chinese deployed DF 21s along Lac. The western jets (Rafale) deployment forced the chinese to deploy 2 J 20s and 5 H6 bombers along lac.
Joining the US, buying readymade in use jets in bulk at once or leasing the US jets asap will send a message across. We should also join the F 35 ecosystem immediately. Chinese are actually testing our relationship with the US with the incursions.

I am very much delighted to view such high quality strategic discussion.
Very distinguished officers of IAF has mentioned about how urgently India has to get fighter jets and other defence mechanism.
I think the reason behind very wide gap between India and China is due to lack of economic development of India since last few years. China has strengthened its economy first in very unprecedented way. World has not seen such economic growth after rise of USA. India was rapidly following China, in spite of having huge gap but lost momentum due to bad economic policy of last few years.
I fully agree with Air Marshal Anil Chopra’s assessment about Pakistan’s depleting Air Force capability due to lack of financial strength. While watching one International think tank’s show same remark was made by Chinese analyst about India. If you follow that comments on the basis of merit it is true as Chinese Economy is 5 times greater then Indian Economy.
Until India achieves rapid economic growth it would be very difficult to equipped Indian forces at desired level.

Russia No.2 with some 3000 aircrafts.
USA No. 1 with some 10,000 aircrafts including 5th gen fighters..
      .
That is what happens when you have money and your public don't hate the rich people unlike India where we continuously bash AMBANI.

Their navy has more aircrafts than most air forces.
On its own , it's the 2nd largest air force

PLAAF aircraft inventory is made of cheap knockoffs and have never been tested in an actual warfare. Effectiveness of the fighter planes can only be tested in a war. Highly doubtful if these cheap knockoffs will help them in air superiority.

By the basis of sheer numbers 30 Squadrons is no match for 80 Squadrons...We need at least 100 Squadrons..
