Great observation! The parents are so naive. It sure seems like that message drone sent out of The Barrier will, in fact, be the key for allowing the pirate frigate to enter The Barrier. I hope that At Attin doesn’t end up like At Achrann.

I shed no tear for Brutus's demise, but still did the whole Chris Tucker/Ice Cube meme from Friday when Jod just mercilessly head shot him point blank. That combined with his threat of going all Anakin on the kids and their parents with the lightsaber really recast Jod in a more sinister light very well. It’s going to be hella a finale! Jod goes full on villain mode in this episode! (Even when he is not being watched by his crew). Him wielding a blue lightsaber is kinda frightening when it’s in a era where force users are super minority (even more then usual) especially against helpless kids and adults
Im honestly really glad that the writers are portraying Jod in this sinister and selfish way. Its not just some performance to act tough with his crew its just who he is. And I love that. Was really impressed by the acting in this episode. Not just the obviously good parts, like the parent's holomessage or the kid's reaction to it, or Jod's outburst and the kid's reaction to that. The one that sticked out to me was Jod in the vault. The look in his eyes as he looks at the gold, it's like the meme, find someone who looks at you the same way Jod looks at credits. Jokes aside, there was a real moment of pathos in it, like you could see in his eyes the genuine happiness mixed with relief mixed with perhaps a little sadness. As a viewer, you empathize and feel happy for him because this is what he's always wanted in life, but at the same time you can see a little sadness almost because the fact is hitting him, "This is all I've ever wanted in life...." Meanwhile the kids are outside with their loving families. It was a moment where I was like, "Woah, this is a lot better acting than I would have figured necessary for a fun kid's pirate show." But that's been the case with the show throughout. There's little acting moments where I'm like that was genuinely good and a lot better than I was expecting.
Jod's arc is referential to the most famous pirate captain in fiction, Long John Silver. Silver genuinely liked Hawkins but as soon as they were odds being a pirate and the treasure took precedent.
I loved how the transmitter the parents sent up through the barrier was clearly a Star Wars version of a "message in a bottle" This show has so many classic pirate tropes, with a Star Wars spin
This episode has so many moments that made me think "yep, Jod's a pirate." Shooting Brutus the instant he's vulnerable? Pirate. Threatening children, and those the kids' parents at swordpoint to keep them in line? Pirate. Cry-laughing at the sight of endless treasure? Pirate!
@ I was kinda thinking that too but they did that in Obi-wan with Vader to show how strong he was so it might not make sense to suggest Jod was as strong of force user as Darth Vader.
I’ve always been a fan of Jude Law, but seeing him in Star Wars has been absolutely magical. He’s incredible in this role, and the kids in Skeleton Crew have done an amazing job holding their own with such strong performances. Skeleton Crew is solid! ♥ Thanks, Star Wars Explained, for the fun and timely reviews! 👏
I convinced myself that the kids were gonna contact Kyhm and get some help before they returned to At Attin. Kyhm would call Carson. Carson would say "I know a guy" then we would here the Mando theme. I'm glad I was wrong
I love the Kamino references with the droids in this episode and the parallels to them showing Obi Wan his army. Obi wan having to play along with it to get what he wants, a bounty hunter. Jude Law playing along with it to get what he wants, a bounty.
I mean, the old-school pirates were still willing to go to some dark lengths; Honda once threatened to sell Ahsoka to a client who preferred the company of “female Jedi” regardless of whether they were still alive.
The subversion of expectations with Jod has been one of my favorite parts of the show. They did not go at all where I was expecting with that character.
Jod chopping off 33 head was pretty frightening, (I know I keep talking about him but I feel this episode really revolved him not longer acting and being the pirate he always been).
You are nearly-always excellent at framing SW episodes in a broader context, and at the same time distilling things down. I love how you talk about life lessons, the ones that the characters learned and the ones that maybe other characters (like Jod) might never learn. And I can't wait for the finale to see how it all turns out.
When Alex mentioned that “LEEROY JENKINS” is now over 20 years old as a meme I literally exclaimed “oh my god”. The passage of time feels so real right now! 😭
I have 0 qualms if Jod stays the villain that he appears to be and doesn't have some heartwarming face turn at the end. I like the idea that he is the real big bad that the kids have to overcome on their own.
At Atton has more than enough credits made to pay off the debt incurred by the New Republic, when it was the Rebellion, during the War with the Empire.
Jod sneaking into the ship when the crew didn't notice is such a Jod thing to do. He truly is a pirate through and through, making him a great villain.
In episode one, Wim plays with the actions figures & says something about someone being locked in the dungeons, tortured forever. What if Jod is locked in a vault & dies of starvation? Could his fate have been foreshadowed since the 1st episode?
I was so convinced the supervisor either didn't exist or was a villain. To know its Stephen Fry, he absolutely has to be on screen and a friendly old chap!
You said maybe he won’t have a redemption. I think his redemption if it ever happens will be a split second one like Darth Vader’s. He’s too far gone with trauma. When he bullies the kids he sounds like he’s venting traumatically. Like he’s talking to himself that way. The kids have had luxuries he’s never had. He’s trying to lay the good side in him to rest for good. He’s facing what’s left of his conscience. Very complex character. I love this show. Sometimes he can fix things for himself on the fly. The kids trigger him. They made him lose it. He’s laughed maniacally a few times in the show before the moment the credits are in his clutches showering to the floor. He’s always been suppressing a traumatized element of his personality. There still is a chance he will have his throw the emperor down a shaft moment and I hope he does. If he doesn’t it will be very memorable.
I feel like his throwing the Emperor down a shaft moment was killing Brutus. He just decided to fill the power vacuum over on the dark side instead of returning to the light.
I love Jod subverting the trope of being the father figure. It’s been used so much recently in Star Wars that I’m glad they went so different this time
There’s problems w/ this notion to be sure but I keep going back and forth on Snowball being the Captain & the combo of Snowball & SM-33 being the Tak Rennod persona. 🤷♂️ Regardless, I think you’re right & as such Neel’s kindness towards Snowball will pay off.
I think Jod was being 'cruel to be kind' in this episode - demonstrating to the kids that there is nothing glamorous or fun about being a pirate, it's a cruel and brutal life. The fact that he didn't squash Snowball when he could have so easily, hints at his true motives where the kids are concerned.
I'm glad Skeleton Crew was something to end 2024 on a high note, and a brilliant start to 2025. Let's hope things will be better for us in the new year :)
Genuinely surprised Jod is a full-on antagonist. Not sure how his story concludes next week, but he has to be punished in some way for threatening the kids.
There has been a lot of set up for the kids to now be very capable when they work together. Like Neel now knows about a large canon on the roof of the school (assuming that At Achrann was an exactly the same as At Attin) before it fell into darkness. The message drone had the access code for the Barrier and the pirates have the drone, so they may be able to acquire the code.
Such an awesome episode! And man, Jude Law as Jod scared me. Finally great showing what pirates really are: merciless individuals who don't give a crap about anything or anyone, just as long as they get what they can take. Really hoping for a good, if not great, finale. 🤞🤞
I wonder if we will get any more backstory on Jod, or if this episode goes to show that he really is just a PoS, ruthless pirate who happened to be blessed with some Force abilities. The way he handles a lightsaber, almost a little *too* theatrically, with a little uncertainty (at least to my eyes) makes me think this is a man who has merely seen some holos of Jedi over the years, if even that.
I’m still in absolute shock at how cruel Jod really turned out to be. Abandoning the kids with treasure and a big grin sold it a bit in the previous episode, but then threatening to carve them up and their parents with his lightsaber is another extreme level of evil. Even Hondo wasn’t as cruel in his later years as a pirate in the Clone Wars or into Rebels/Galaxy’s Edge.
It wouldn't surprise me if the supervisor was a droid himself, since it seems like the planet is stuck on some old programing. Season 1 ending with Jod and Wim stuck together alone on the pirate ship or some escape vessel, could be a way to introduce a typical master and apprentice scenario, whether it be pirate or jedi, since for most of the season it seems like they eluded to that eventuality. That would allow a new quest for the rest of the kids to once again runaway from home and try and locate Wim in season 2. Or maybe everything in season 1 just raps up nicely, I dunno contrary to what you said Alex I really can't see them give all the answers in a single episode, but I guess we will see in a week. Very excited for the final.
I wouldn't be surprised if the supervisor was actually one of tak rennods pirates or even maybe tak rennod himself. They left prerecorded messages so that no one who know they were no longer there along with ordering the security drones to not enter or let anyone enter the supervisors office.
@@stevenjohnson6962 could be, but I wonder why they haven't left the planet yet if that was the case. I mean credits are only of use if you spend it right? If Tak Rennod is alive, I'm guessing he is a ghost in the machine and living as part of the system or something like that.
I think Khymm will return in the final episode, having found the maelstrom nebula barrier, and the Republic will show up to destroy the pirates and liberate the planet. Then, we see Thrawn show up to liberate the gold in the post credits ❤
I do wonder if the Supervisor is on auto-pilot and has been slowly hollowing out the planet with all those vaults. That core might be the only thing holding At Attin together. 😬
Yup, even if he didn't call it at the end of last episode (which they made sure to include in the recap) the subtitles clearly show he finished calling claimsies
I don't know if you noticed it, but the credited actor for the Supervisor is Stephen Fry! He's one of my favorites, and oddly enough, I've been seeing him more in the last week in my TH-cam algorithm and elsewhere, so it was a total surprise to see him turn up here as well! I knew that voice sounded familiar somehow! ;)
Remember, Jod is very much the "Long John Silver" of this show. The original Long John DOES betray the kid before having a change of heart at the very last minute. There's hope still for Jod.
Was it just me or did anyone else notice a familiar sounding voice? The droid's voice that led Jod into the vault kind of sounded like Lama Su, the Kaminoan. Like a computerized voice of him. If not sounding like Lama Su, the droid's voice had the cadence of a Kaminoan. Also that scene was similar to Obi-Wan visiting Kamino. Both the droid and Lama Su thought the visitor was someone there to check on the operations. At Attin being very wealthy and Kamino being very wealthy, any connection? The clone army funded by At Attin?
I was impressed by the vault, both the design in general, and the extent to which it looked similar to the Intergalactic Banking Clan vault on Scipio from way back in the Clone Wars (Season 6, Episode 5).
We know Tak Rennod stole a ship from At Attin- which is how he (and the kids) moved back & forth. But how did Capt. Rennod get on At Attin in the first place?
The poor pirate Jod offered so much treasure that he could buy a farm on his home-world. Instead, he goes into the storm to reach At Attin and "buys the farm" instead.
I thought Wim attacking while Fern tried to think of a plan was like Anakin rushing Dooku in Episode II. Also the lightsaber igniting in front of the kids was like Anakin in the Jedi temple in episode III.
I'm honestly surprised that you're surprised that Jod isn't getting a redemption arc. Lucasfilm pulled this same tactic twice in the Bad Batch with Cid and Rampart.
I’m still not convinced that Jod won’t have a redemption arc. In treasure island/planet it was around this time that Captan Silver doubled down on being an evil pirate to only change his tone in the final climax of the story.
After this episode I really don't think there's a supervisor. In keeping with the pirate theme, I fully expect them to get to supervisor's tower next episode and find a skeleton sitting at a desk. Then Fern or one of the good guys will call "Claimsies" for the planet.
I see the finale going like this, the kids and their parents escape Jod on the Onyx Cinder and he and the pirates take over At Attin. So the kids either fly to Ad Achrann to get the help of the warriors there or fly to a New Republic System to get there help (most likely the Adelphi Rangers to connect to Mando and bring Carson into the story ). then they will retake At Attin from Jod and the pirates.
I bet Neel finds one of the hidden laser turrets and then Wim uses it to blast a couple satellites out of the sky, disrupting the barrier and revealing the planet to the Republic.
I kind of get a feeling someone from the First Order will bring At Attin back into the fold but under the guise of the Republic (which some planets would be aligned with the Centrists who were in the Republic and later formed into the First Order).
Does anyone else think that Tak Renord will be revealed as the Supervisor? It would explain why they didn’t show his face, and why we haven’t seen the Supervisor yet. And what better for a pirates than to rule a planet and be in charge of all of the credits
Since Jod claimed that At Attin has been hidden for hundreds of years. Do you think it is possible that the planet was hidden during the Nihil conflict? The whole pirate theme would fit this. Also a couple episodes it was mentioned that the ‘At’ planets were part of some great works. Finally, before its announcement, the show was rumored to be a High Republic show. Maybe it still is in a way?

Regardless, I think you’re right & as such Neel’s kindness towards Snowball will pay off.
I love realizing at some point of Tuesdays that Skeleton Crew is on that night. This is a top tier show.
I still hear people online say Leroy Jenkins, so yeah, I guess it’s still popular.
If nobody has pointed it out yet the supervisor is voiced by Stephen Fry
I cry when kids reunite with the parents
I hope we find out what happened to Wim's mum!!
We never saw Glurb die. Stay tuned for Star Wars Episode X: Gloweed Fields Forever
@kaspermygenfordt2323 they're dead because the ship they were on is the same one the kids have
That jerry-rigged communicator looks just like the ship in ET
I think Khymm will return in the final episode, having found the maelstrom nebula barrier, and the Republic will show up to destroy the pirates and liberate the planet. Then, we see Thrawn show up to liberate the gold in the post credits ❤
Jod: Because of you, we're all taking *golden* showers!
Crew: (laughs off screen)
Jod: What?
"I am the terror that flaps in the night! I am the winged scourge that pecks at your nightmares! I am Darkwing Duck!"
I do wonder if the Supervisor is on auto-pilot and has been slowly hollowing out the planet with all those vaults. That core might be the only thing holding At Attin together. 😬
Whim called claimsies first!
i think this and the fact that jod didn't relinquish the frigate allowed 33 to overrule him
Yup, even if he didn't call it at the end of last episode (which they made sure to include in the recap) the subtitles clearly show he finished calling claimsies
Jod reacted like everyone who got into the Serra Madre vault in new vegas seeing those credits.
“But getting there, that’s not the hardest part
…
…
It’s letting go”
8:37 Which is actually Stephen Fry, believe it or not.
3:43 Adding to that, he says in Episode 5 that pirate captains never trust their crew.
I don't know if you noticed it, but the credited actor for the Supervisor is Stephen Fry! He's one of my favorites, and oddly enough, I've been seeing him more in the last week in my TH-cam algorithm and elsewhere, so it was a total surprise to see him turn up here as well! I knew that voice sounded familiar somehow! ;)
Something happened to scar Jod. Hurt people, hurt people.
Supervisor Steven Fry was a nice surprise
When Jod said "the crew loves me" I could have swore he was talking about the kids on the onyx cinder before the pirate crew knew it was children.
I'm guessing that next week we'll find out that Cthallops, who helped them at the spa is the supervisor of At Attin.
Hector Navarro noticed that the Supervisor is credited as : (drums) STEPHEN FRY !!!
The poor pirate Jod offered so much treasure that he could buy a farm on his home-world.
Instead, he goes into the storm to reach At Attin and "buys the farm" instead.
your leeroy jenkins question has sent me spiraling
I thought Wim attacking while Fern tried to think of a plan was like Anakin rushing Dooku in Episode II. Also the lightsaber igniting in front of the kids was like Anakin in the Jedi temple in episode III.
I'm honestly surprised that you're surprised that Jod isn't getting a redemption arc. Lucasfilm pulled this same tactic twice in the Bad Batch with Cid and Rampart.
True, but none of them were main characters. This would be more like Crosshair or Tam Ryvora not getting a redemption.
Once again, absolutely loving this show!!!
Leroy Jenkins now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time. A long time.
6:55 Thank you for clarifying you were referring to Tech in The Bad Batch; I honest to goodness thought you said "Textile denial" and was wondering what on Earth that meant. 😅
Such a good show! Nice review! 😊
4:50
I don't worry Alex. I still reference Leroy Jenkins
those storm seeds looked cool, also i guess that answers how they left the planet in the first place, unless its like a one way system
having Jude Law show up in further mando verse shows or movies as a villian would be aweseom!!
Leeroy Jenkins. Now, that's a name I have not heard in a long time. Love it! 😂
