Yes, great callout! There's been a recurring theme in the past episodes of KB using her augmentation as a shell, and then in this episode Wim helps her repair it with technology from actual crab shells.
I loved KB portrayal of disabilities when it came to her augmentations. Wim getting his jedi knight moment saving KB was nice. Fern character growth was good to see and bonding with neel more. The onyx cinder looks so clean now.
It's a take on disability that I frankly never actually see and I adore it. So often in narratives about disability we're expected to be either totally incapable or able to overcome it to show that we're "just as good" as everybody else, in reality we're not capable as everyone else and this is one of the few times I've seen the anxiety of saying when you're struggling for fear of being perceived as different done well.
This is why they dont give you EVERYTHING at first. We get to Grow with the Kids instead of bieng told about the kids. KB is just as important, but we were like Fern ignorant of her problems until she tells us
I love how in the previous episode we heard captain Renod say that he clad his ship in arms and armor in preparation for the journey to At Atin and now we get to see exactly what he meant. He basically built a ship around his existing ship, no wonder it’s survived so many crash landings
The scene with KB and Wim had me bawling. I saw a lot of myself as a kid in KB in that scene as I’ve been disabled since I was a kid too. And Wim in that moment of slowing down and following instructions to save a friend in need was so beautifully done. It’s been a while since a show or movie has moved me this way. Love it.
I love that Neel always wants in on the hugs. He ran to Jod and hugged him on At Achrann, and as soon as Fern and KB are hugging, Neel is fast to join. I love all these kids, but Neel has my heart. He's the sweetest!
i like how wim said "they speak, that means they're intelligent" about the crabs; that was a fun callback to qui-gon's line about jar-jar in episode 1!
I loved Bryce Dallas Howard directing. The way it was shot made things like the giant crab and the scrap ship seem so enormous and imposing. The chute-slide scene seemed soooo fast and dangerous. And we often pulled back to make the kids feel isolated and alone. Really well done.
I loved how they split up the two sets of friends and was able to show a different side to the group relationships. Also I loved the kb and wim interactions. It was so cute even at end when she said thank you jedi. I wish they would have done more with neel and fern though.
More fun wordplay! Just like 33 literally "cant say" he remembered At Attin. The Emergency Hull Demolition Sequence sounds like a self destruction button but it was an actual Emergency Hull with a Demolition Sequence incase of Emergency.
It was the extra armor that Tak Rennod had put on the ship to storm At Attin. In the hologram at the end of episode.5 and in the intro Re-cap. He said “ the ship his all clad in armor and ready to make the trip to At Attin”!
Had me think of Tolkiens Fellowship entering Moria. Gandalf translates the Elvish as "Speak, friend, and enter." He has a hard time figuring out what the password could be. But it's actually "Say 'friend' and enter." There in plain sight. Just like "can't say" isn't about not being able to but not being allowed to. Darn good writing.
@@MiaNilsson-x6m "Can't say I remember no At Attin" makes him sound like some kind of pirate droid while in reality he's literally just telling you that he isn't allowed to talk about it haha. Whoever came up with that is a genius.
We see that scene in the trailers. Just one scene left: the pirates on the Onyx Cinder, (including the woman who wants her own ship) watching Fara's message to the kids.
The Onyx Cinder shedding its outer hull could be similar to how actual pirates would capture English, French or Spanish ships and then rename and repurpose them for their own ends. Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge was originally a French ship called La Concorde, and he added more heavy cannon to it, so maybe Rennod captured an Old Republic ship and added a complete outer hull to better suit it as his flagship.
Bryce Dallas Howard did it again! Her episodes in Star Wars are always great, and I loved what happened (Well, not crazy about Mando Season 3, plus it's a combination of writing and direction, but whatever.). The very serious danger KB was in and giving Wim the confidence he needed to help her was just delightful. Also, KB says, "Total systems failure," as if it's not even a big deal that she would have literally died, is crazy. But then she says, "Thanks Jedi," and this just proves why KB is my favorite character of the show. With all the augs, she looks cool, she has all the gadgets, she has new special abilities, and she's just really kind and sweet. Always bet on aesthetics, and then when Star Wars shows that the character has a lot more going on, it just gives you bonus things to like about them. And yeah, everyone getting super vulnerable with one another, really digging at the root of each character, and when they come together and the Onyx Cinder sheds its skin, that's some great metaphorical imagery going on. I thought the Hull Demolition Sequencer was going to be some kind of EMP that shocked the big machine and allowed them to escape, but the fact the ship sheds the outer layer the pirates added to the ship is so much better in every way. It was great.
My only gripe with this show is that I have to wait an entire week for the next installment. I just want to spend more time in this corner of the Star Wars mythos! 😂
I know this show is good because I'm already starting to feel sad it may be years before I see these characters again. I truly hope we get at least one more season with this cast.
Last thing from star wars that made me cry like that was either the finale for the clone wars or when we first saw ahsoka in mando, whichever came first. This episode GOT ME man, I cried my eyes out when whim helped KB, and cried even more when KB and Fern hugged and said they wer best friends 😭😭😭😭😭
It takes a great director to get amazing performances from great actors! It's a synergy that makes the whole movie environment so worth the effort! I once was lucky enough to watch Billy Wilder direct Walter Matthau to do a very complex scene. The absolute magic between Billy and Walter as they interacted to accomplish the scene with just ONE take was near miraculous! While watching the kids acting out this episode I was literally transported into that directorial magic moment! Great work is SO evident in this episode! Stunning!
Maybe I was just in my emotions cos I was hungover but man all the stuff with KB made me cry. Also yeah Wim saying "its too invincible" was perfect kid dialogue
Thank you SO much for this video and of course all the rest, but especially this one. You putting into words what we (or most of us?) were all thinking is so much validation, and I'm so glad that it's a shared thing...about the kids growth, metaphors to friendship, and how true to Star Wars this series really is. Looking forward to the last bit of episodes and your thoughts as usual!
I would say its somewhere in that same ballpark, but I still rate Clone Wars, early Mando, and Andor higher. Regardless, getting good shows is always a positive.
One of my favorite parts to Rise of Skywalker is when we finally see Poe, Finn and Rey on a quest together mixed with bickering and heroics as in Skeleton Crew.
MAN!!! KB and Wim bonding is something I didn't expect to see, but here we are. This entire moment really parallels that of Tech from TBB when it comes to disabilities and their way of seeing the world through their eyes, etc. I am so stoked to see Jod's backstory next week.
Funny that she (KB) doesn't say "death", but "total shutdown"... 😅😬 KB calling Wim a Jedi is very cute and a cool concept, because, for now, all he has is the heart; he doesn't know how to use the Force (or even if he is able to), he has no training, but he has the heart. It redefines Jedi as "hero". Are all good guys Jedi? This is an interesting thought. (Many people might hate it, but I think it's cool!)
The demolishing button was actually just demolishing the extra weight and armor. It was the extra armor that Tak Rennod had put on the ship to storm At Attin. In the hologram at the end of episode.5 and in the intro Re-cap for ep. 6 He said “ the ship his all clad in armor and ready to make the trip to At Attin”!
When KB’s whole skull opened and a computer component came out - oh I had that body horror moment. Sweetheart, you weren’t in an accident, you were in a tragedy.
Not only is this show great Star Wars, it is great TV. One of the best TV shows I have seen in a long while. Disney need to immediately sign up for 2-3 more seasons and let the writers go to work.
Great review! Though you can hear you must have had a blast on NYE! Still, thank you for getting this out when you did, shows how much you appreciate your fans!
When I read the title of the episode, I thought "not again a show where the kids do something absolutely stupid just to create some tension". And then they didn't. It felt believable. I really really like the show and its writing.
I really love a show that gets better and better with every new episode release. That’s how I felt watching Andor and that’s how I feel watching Skeleton Crew. I also love that we got Bryce Dallas Howard back as director, she has been one of my personal favourite directors working on the Mandoverse.
Now that we can actually see what the ship looks like, it very much looks Nabooian, which means the outside finally matches the N1-style screens in the cockpit. Even the thruster colour has changed from red to Nabooian white/blue. I don't know if that's going to have any relevance to the story, but it's great getting to see a new ship from Theed 😊
So KB had an accident and has had implants/augmentations since, but it looks like she has no spinal cord in her neck. Has she been Robocopped or is she an android version of the real KB (dead, comatose, in a bacta tank)?
The kids story was very moving, yes… but I’m interested to see what happens with that lightsaber Jod ‘smuggled’ into the pirate crew… … chekhov’s lightsaber…
Q: Has a pirate code ever been mentioned before in SW lore or is this new? edit: This episode also made me cry so much lololol definitely a very relatable and heartfelt episode. Great episode.
The new Onyx Cinder might not actually be "fully functional". One of the final shots in the episode was of the ship's engine on fire. The kids might need to make one more pit stop to make repairs before heading home and that would give them a reason to call Kh'ymm for help, since they probably don't teach "Starship Mechanics" on At Attin due to their isolationist laws.
Happy new year! Was looking forward to your breakdown knowing how excited you've been for more KB, but I'm a bit underwhelmed by some of your analysis. Fern isn't just "older and taller" than Neel. They are two different species. He will never have her "spider legs." Similarly, KB's augs don't "change what she can do" in a limiting way. They enable her to do (to a limited degree) what Fern can do with relative ease. KB didn't feel safe to draw attention to what makes her different even to her own best friend because she knows that best friend has a history of... "You know how she is. She doesn't have that kind of patience." KB is describing what we call "intolerance" which Fern herself realizes when Neel calls her out on it. That you can't stop at the first answer that works for you because other people have other needs. That you need to consider their perspectives and that maybe being "the most fit" according to your own mental framework doesn't make you the natural leader of those you see as less fit. I'm just saying the casting of this friend group is intentional. This episode is about recognizing your own implicit biases and how failure to do so leads to prejudice even among people who consider themselves "allies." A great lesson going into 2025, I think.
I’ve loved Skeleton Crew from the beginning, every episode has been a big banger, but episode 6 is my favorite, I can’t wait to see what comes next, and I hope Kh’ymm comes back in episode 7 or 8 with New Republic help!!!
A great character growth episode and I feel well equipped to head back to At Attin for the final two episodes again. This is how I think the season finale will play out: First the crew returns to At Attin and is stopped by the shield whom is a hurdle they have to overcome in episode 7. Could be with some help of theyre families joining them from the surface. Then the pirats shows up and its a final showdown in episode 8. Thats where they show us how much they grown and thats is also where we got the final solution to whom the supervisor is.
Loved your commentary ! You voiced some things I had thought myself -- but you thought of things that I had not and I agree with the points you made. It was great to finally see the character development that KB so badly needed. You're right about the crew of four becoming a crew, united, in this episode. It was excellent. If I had to rate it, 10 out of 10. Can't wait for the last two episodes !
Another fine review. I love this show, absolutely love it. I never suspected such a strong actual and symbolic metamorphosis from the pirate ship and juvenile crew to a more sleek and agile ship with young caterpillars transformed into a much more cohesive team of faster butterflies. Well done, all you writers, directors, actors, and everyone that Disney did so well to hire for this excellent show. I could say a lot more, too.
I loved when Wim said going back to "Zero Friends Again" was dumb because KB could be friends with him and Neel. People have been asking for more info on KB, and it seems like the show was waiting for the right moment to tell her story. It's true, they are the Skelton Crew now.
I admit, The Acolyte made me anti Star Wars series...for real because of how bad it was. Skeleton Crew has restored my faith in Star Wars series. This is basically an unpredictable series at best, and keeps us on our toes! Can;t wait to see how the kids confront Jod as he is a turn coat. Thanks @Star Wars Explained !
Fern told KB we could all climb except Neel. She didn’t help him until he begged for it. Fern and KB have a one sided relationship. KB does everything Fern wants to do. Feen is basically selfish.
I think the ship/hull thing is a minor deus ex machina, BUT it's also a well-established trick within the STAR WARS galaxy, notably in Legends when Luke uses the trick to escape Poderis in "The Last Command." Though it's been a little bit since I read the book, I seem to recall they call it an old pirate or smuggler trick. It's just one more note showing the writers of this show are well versed in the mythos.
I like how the title can apply to Jod as well as KB... At least, I initially thought it was a reference to him, but I guess he never really had any friends anyways. 🤷🏽♂️
I have really enjoyed this show, much more than I expected. The character dynamics are great and the action is great too, unexpected things are happening
the last bit was alot like the ride at Galaxys Edge. 4 members each at their station. One to shoot, 2 to fly and the engineer to fix the ship/engine. :)
You know, one of the important things to note here is that Neel isn't afraid to speak his mind and advocate for himself. He told Fern what she needed to hear that KB felt like she couldn't. And KB was able to connect with Wim in a way the other two couldn't, either. This split up was definitely EXACTLY what the kids needed.
Yes I’m loving this show and this was a great episode, heartwarming, great action and love the KB and Whim scene most of all. Favorite moment was when KB called Whim, Jedi.
I must say. its been a long time since star wars gave me a tingle down my spine. last time was when I saw the trailer for ep 7 (how disappointed I was). But, seeing the x-wings turn up, and seeing the kids look up in wonder and realise they're the good guys! what a great moment! tingles!
I liked the reveal of the ship reveal because its a reversal of the falcon. How it was once a sleek ship with a head butting crew turned it into a heap of junk. But with skeleton crew ship with teamwork and trust it is reborn into a sleek ship.
Thank you, Alex! ✨💀✨ The Xi'Dec in THE LAST JEDI who let out an operatic scream as the fathiers wrecked Canto Bight Casino was called 'Ubbla Mollbro'. She's my very favorite minor character ever! Either she or a very similar-looking Xi'Dec was in this episode as 'Jod' emerged wearing jewels onto the Skull Ridge Mountain Hotel & Spa landing pad. 'Ubbla' or her lookalike must've been looking to get her external egg sacks fertilized, no doubt. 🤷♀ I hope you'll mention her in your Easter Egg video.
I like the parallel of the Onyx Cinder coming out of its shell and KB coming out of _her_ shell.

The crabs were foreshadowing the whole time. XD

She doesn't have that kind of patience."
KB is describing what we call "intolerance" which Fern herself realizes when Neel calls her out on it.
I thought the giant crab looked kinda janky but in a good way. In a "this doesn't look super smooth, but it's nice though?" kind of way.
It's a reminder that it's all being done for real and theres a charm to it. It's like clucking choreography and stunts in a 90's films.
I'm watching this show with my son, and this episode made me tear up. Awesome Star Wars for all generations.
I’ve loved Skeleton Crew from the beginning, every episode has been a big banger, but episode 6 is my favorite, I can’t wait to see what comes next, and I hope Kh’ymm comes back in episode 7 or 8 with New Republic help!!!
Bryce Dallas Howard never misses, this was my favorite episode so far!
A great character growth episode and I feel well equipped to head back to At Attin for the final two episodes again.
This is how I think the season finale will play out:
First the crew returns to At Attin and is stopped by the shield whom is a hurdle they have to overcome in episode 7.
Happy New Year to you and Mollie 👍
Another fine review. I love this show, absolutely love it. I never suspected such a strong actual and symbolic metamorphosis from the pirate ship and juvenile crew to a more sleek and agile ship with young caterpillars transformed into a much more cohesive team of faster butterflies. Well done, all you writers, directors, actors, and everyone that Disney did so well to hire for this excellent show. I could say a lot more, too.
I really like the skeleton crew.
I loved when Wim said going back to "Zero Friends Again" was dumb because KB could be friends with him and Neel. People have been asking for more info on KB, and it seems like the show was waiting for the right moment to tell her story. It's true, they are the Skelton Crew now.
I thought last week’s was my favorite, but this is as easily as good for very different reasons.
The ladder Fern and Neel climb reminded me of the one Chewie and Boba Fett climbed in the animated section of the Star Wars Holiday Special!
Another great episode, can't wait till next week❤
I admit, The Acolyte made me anti Star Wars series...for real because of how bad it was. Skeleton Crew has restored my faith in Star Wars series. This is basically an unpredictable series at best, and keeps us on our toes! Can;t wait to see how the kids confront Jod as he is a turn coat. Thanks @Star Wars Explained !
Happy New Year to you and Molly! 🎉
Fern told KB we could all climb except Neel. She didn’t help him until he begged for it. Fern and KB have a one sided relationship. KB does everything Fern wants to do. Feen is basically selfish.
There’s actually a lot of foreshadowing on KB’s weaknesses
There was the moment when she stood still in episode 4 when everyone else ran for cover, I think.
@ tbh it’s the 5th episode that got me worried
I think the ship/hull thing is a minor deus ex machina, BUT it's also a well-established trick within the STAR WARS galaxy, notably in Legends when Luke uses the trick to escape Poderis in "The Last Command." Though it's been a little bit since I read the book, I seem to recall they call it an old pirate or smuggler trick. It's just one more note showing the writers of this show are well versed in the mythos.
I like how the title can apply to Jod as well as KB... At least, I initially thought it was a reference to him, but I guess he never really had any friends anyways. 🤷🏽♂️
Happy new year🎉 loved this episode . Love kb❤
I love the onyx cinder transformation sequence. It looks so damn good
I gotta hand it to you, I agree with you regarding what happened in this episode that I’ve already seen.
So, is there going to be a whole new run of Onyx Cinder starship toys with removable hulls now?
a BDH episode. Stellar! Short...but stellar!
I was surprised to see Jaleel White, aka Steve Urkel as a pirate.
I have really enjoyed this show, much more than I expected. The character dynamics are great and the action is great too, unexpected things are happening
The way you described Wim being a hero without needing to be a Jedi reminded me of the monologue in the Bionicle Inika advert.
the last bit was alot like the ride at Galaxys Edge. 4 members each at their station. One to shoot, 2 to fly and the engineer to fix the ship/engine. :)
I think trusting in your destiny and trust in the Force are two different things.
All is as the Force wills it
Loved Neel and KB since the beginning. The other kids are now good with me too.
BDH has done a great job with directing SW content
Omg the Neel clips 😂
The episode was awesome I feel like we getting tcloser to pirates attacking attin
But, seeing the x-wings turn up, and seeing the kids look up in wonder and realise they're the good guys! what a great moment! tingles!
WWWD! That is how I am going to live my life!! … Ok, maybe not.
You missed qui-gon "The ability to speak doesn't make you intelligent" call back from Neil
Man, I'm so thankful for this show. I'd missed loving a Star Wars show that isn't Andor, xd
