Dude I’ve had a 404sx for over a year and never knew about the auto trig level. I got mine used with no manual so I’ve been figuring it out on my own. Been sampling everything manually hah. Thanks for your page! More 404sx videos!
Baselines are always tricky. It does help if you have a sub woofer. It also helps if when your sampling you know the key of the sample. This is a great video. Thanks.
Yo why does no other SP TH-camr show this auto record sampling technique!!?? I’m so glad I found this before my SP arrived in the mail lol I can’t wait to get started!
j just another thank you as I have learned a great deal that I wasn't aware of or had no idea was possible with the sp 404 sx. very kind of you to take the time to school us all! all the best!
you always bring me back ! love the way u explain the things so simply that people cant say they dont understand, they re not allowed to not understand after that :p
Love ya man,u teach me in a very simple way how sample...maybe the next months i’ll buy my first Roland Sp,I fell in love with this. Thank u for everything, from italy man❤️
Starbursts and Skittles doc! Look here. I am soooooo grateful for you making this channel. I'm a 15 yr. old up and coming producer and between what I learned from my idols (DIlla Dawg, Q-Tip, Madlib, Pete Rock, etc. and jazz and blues cats) prior to watching your channel and watching your channel, I've been able to transform my "Dilla copying" into my own sound. Btw, I always end up at your MF Doom inspired 7 with the Looney Toons sample joint! Constantly laughing at that in my head. My question is what jazz albums do you suggest for samples? Thanks doc! #peaceandpositiveenergy
Verysickbeats I find it facinating but right now I'm strugling with the work flow of stucturing/building a sensible way to play my pattern progressions that build up to the final product and I have to learn how to load great sounds/samples that I create in native instruments I'll be playing with the record player samplingvthis weekend no work-!!!- thanks for responding. Appreciate YOU
Aloha, Thanks so much man. I very enthused about this. My sp 404 been collecting dust. Do have any videos on mastering or final mix and levels for finishing tracks. Thank you for all that you do especially sharing your expertise.
can you please do a video on pitching samples with the 504sx. I tried to pitch up and down and I have to use the mfx pitch and it sucks cuz it doesn't actually slow down or speed up the sample like the 202 or an mpc. Please help
I want to do a lot of pitch changing (short samples, so speed change is ok also). I've heard the sp 404 doesn't do this well or consistently. Isolator is also an issue? What's your opinion on the 404's ability to change pitch and isolate? Thanks
pitch changing sucks on sp404sx ,i hate it so much i don't even do that shit . not sure about the isolator ,i don't use it very often . if you wanna do a lot of pitch changing i think you're better off with an mpc. but i still love my sp ,awesome piece of hardware .
you can use the isolator to make basslines, its decent enough for it. The pitch is bad but most people pitch on the turntable, in a phone app, or on an SP 202.
J, i got 1/4 inch on one end and RCA phono on the other end can i use these cables to hook up my microkorg to my mpc renaissance? or does it got to be 1/4 on bolth ends
yo filt, dope video! do you know the artist wun two? he works on an sp (and an mpc 60 i believe) always loved his minimalistic approach on boom bap. you should check him out! id love to hear what you think about him and maybe you can show us some tricks to that
Hi I want to know if its possible to sample on the 404 while a pattern is playing...? Like to play keyboard while the beat sequence play on 404 and then record the keyboard session Thx 👍
What's up bro. I was wondering if you can do a tutorial for Bending or Gliding Bass notes on the MPC. A reference track I've been trying to decipher is "Mighty Healthy" by Ghostface on the Supreme Clientele album. I think the producer is Mathematics. Peace
Another question if I may please sir, I've been working in pattern sequence mode and I don't like only being able to play the one sequence at a time. How can I somehow save my loop to a pad and play several loops at time?
snickers! kids know that I gotta check those snickers for razor blades and poison in the way of a humble jester. lmfao I eat all that shit though hahaha
I think you should give Busy Works Beats another chance, man! Game has taught me tons about FL Studio while Jfilt is upping my MPC skills mad quickly. Really fucking appreciate these guys!
I've got a question please man using pattern sequencer mode when I've done my drum loop and set it playing is it possible to play another sequence with my samples on at the same time? I seem to be able to only play 1 at a time. Thanks alot
That's okay. I suppose there's no way around it, so is it a case of putting the drums and samples all on one pad? Then say I want a different sequence record to another pad? Thanks

wonderful vids man. simple enough for beginners, but open ended enough for experienced dudes to still learn something
thanks and love the comment!!!
Appreciate you posting this video. Glad to see the SP getting love
I just got my SP-404 a week ago. Right now I just finished reading the manual. Thank you for this video. The tip you showed is very useful.
my pleasure
You should do a series of inspired techniques for Ras G from Brainfeeder. Definetly check him out. He uses the SP404 as well.
yop!!!

PLEASE! keeping boombap alive SPACE BASE!
Hey especially because Ras is in the heavens you should do that even more so

Man i wish you could do that on the 303. Great tutorial!
Anthony Atkinson you can.. read the manual
MixtapeMan07 Thank you, I overlooked that when I first read the manual!!
Anthony Atkinson no doubt.. also check out the sp forums, it really helped me learn my 303 front to back
love your vids man, just bought one and this will help a ton! peeeeeeace
Awesome! Thank you!
I've been wanting the 404 for a long time but I think I'm just gonna trade my MPC2000 for the 303, great video as always!!
DO NOT!!! U'll miss the MPC. Just wait, save money and cop a 404 or 303 (study their differences before spending a $).
Pat Pat ur probably right, thanks for the heads up, an sp 303 will probably go around $200 ish so I'll just wait when I have the money
good tips man, thank you so much!
this is really good advice
much thanks

nice work. baselines are tricky. and making them on and ap is harder.
much thanks
Ahi Na' Ma!! Big Up!!
An old SP trick is sampling the subsonic effect at different pitches to make bass notes, and then a bassline.
yeah only thing about that it is that technique is very limited plus u have to be very accurate or you'll easily be out of pitch
Great video.
much thanks
Yes Bro, awesome
Thanks

Mieszko Grondowy what I've heard. Thanks for the info
you can use the isolator to make basslines, its decent enough for it. The pitch is bad but most people pitch on the turntable, in a phone app, or on an SP 202.
Yes Finally!!!
LOL
I was just wondering if you ever use a daw to make beats or if you just primarily use the mpc and sp.
In addition to hardware i like to also use protools and or garageband such as in this vid th-cam.com/video/0WLjicIB0AI/w-d-xo.html
J, i got 1/4 inch on one end and RCA phono on the other end can i use these cables to hook up my microkorg to my mpc renaissance? or does it got to be 1/4 on bolth ends
if ren has rca jacks then yes
cool thanks
yo filt, dope video! do you know the artist wun two? he works on an sp (and an mpc 60 i believe) always loved his minimalistic approach on boom bap. you should check him out! id love to hear what you think about him and maybe you can show us some tricks to that

thank you so much!!!!

Hi I want to know if its possible to sample on the 404 while a pattern is playing...? Like to play keyboard while the beat sequence play on 404 and then record the keyboard session
Thx 👍
on the 555 you can but with the 404 you would have to use the resample method which basically is re-recording premade samples unless im mistaken
What's up bro. I was wondering if you can do a tutorial for Bending or Gliding Bass notes on the MPC. A reference track I've been trying to decipher is "Mighty Healthy" by Ghostface on the Supreme Clientele album. I think the producer is Mathematics. Peace
i will have to look into that thanks!
Another question if I may please sir, I've been working in pattern sequence mode and I don't like only being able to play the one sequence at a time. How can I somehow save my loop to a pad and play several loops at time?
only way i can think of off the top of my head is by resampling a pattern onto a pad

I've got a question please man using pattern sequencer mode when I've done my drum loop and set it playing is it possible to play another sequence with my samples on at the same time? I seem to be able to only play 1 at a time. Thanks alot
unfortunately thats one of the drawbacks of the sp, you are limited depending on when different samples are played at the same time
That's okay. I suppose there's no way around it, so is it a case of putting the drums and samples all on one pad? Then say I want a different sequence record to another pad? Thanks
