    You actually CAN change button mappings now, as of the most recent firmware version! I changed my NES layout to have the “Y” button mapped to “B”, and the “B” button mapped to “A”. Also, if you use the no-intro roms for SNES, those should already have the headers trimmed :)

    The idea of having a portable emulation device like an Analogue Pocket or Retroid Pocket 3 is definitely growing on me, but I definitely agree that changes/iterations are so frequent that I am hesitant to buy one of these devices now just to see a more streamlined/more powerful device get announced in 6 months.

    • @dirediredude
      @dirediredude ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Well that's the nature of tech so you'll be waiting a while. But you can probably rest easy knowing Analogue does it right and won't be doing something like this device for a long time. If you don't mind grabbing one of the more generic Chinese devices, yeah they'll probably spec bump more often. But honestly what will that really get you? A couple more cores available?

      Regardless of the new tech that comes out, these devices will always play these retro games. • @dirediredude
      @dirediredude ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@yoaiou Yeah exactly. If software emulation was all you were after the analogue pocket is actually pretty low on the list of things you should be looking at in the first place. It's primary purpose is hardware emulation, this is just a nice new perk on top of an already great design.

    I think it's neat that there's so many options for handheld emulators nowadays. Personally I bought my RG351M a year+ ago, and I'm perfectly happy to have that be my sole emulator handheld until PS2 is available in smaller form factors. IMHO it's all about finding something that works for you, buying it and enjoying it until there's a big leap that allows for more emulation options that your old one can't do.

    The Analogue Pocket is probably the most beautiful console out there. As Bob mentioned in the video, I’d be too afraid of incidental scuffs, scratches, and marks in general usage. While I tend to baby my electronics, this console is a work of art. I’ll be in trouble if the supply catches up to demand and it can become more of an impulse purchase. The only other hang up for me is the inability to emulate N64 (form factor and control limitations aside).

  • @CLouDBRoS
    @CLouDBRoS ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This looks cool and all, hardware emulation also seems like a good option but something that I realized recently is that when I'm on the go I care more about the ease of use that some options can give more than a perfect or accurate representation, like you said fastforward, save states and the option to put the console to sleep in a sec without worrying about the game are great additions. Also It's really hard to justify It with that price over a normal emulation machine if one doesn't have the cartridges or really care about them.
    I realized that after my anbernic was stolen and destroyed by a dog, and I went back to use the old 3ds with the extended battery, damn I miss those save states, I need to manually close the gba games because the console doesn't go to sleep mode, after watching your videos multiple times I think I'll get the Pocket 3 or Miyoo Mini, not sure which one yet. the Mini seems nice and portable but the Pocket 3 ability to use It sideways for vertical shooters seems really cool.

    Correction to your very first statement: The update opened up development for their main FPGA chip. The second, smaller, FPGA chip is what handles the OS and other functions. The main CycloneV chip is what all the emulators in the Pocket are running on. So all of these new, third party cores are running on the same physical chip that their cartridge based cores run on.

Because right now, whatever month you try this in, you'll certainly find a good emulation device for emulation up to PS1 for ~60 USD, for emulation up to NDS for less than 100 USD, up to GameCube for ~200 USD etc., and with months passing, newer devices will up the ante again and again. As a user, you just have to make sure you buy one that _really_ suits your needs and wants and stick with it (the good ones get good 3rd party firmware to tinker with later on) instead of buying a new one every other month. FPGA isn't really the same thing as emulation. The term "hardware emulation" is a bit of a misnomer. The reason why there's less input lag with all emulation is because the input lag with emulation comes from the software overhead, since because youre running the console as software, youre running essentially 2 layers of software - both the console and the game. With an FPGA core you're simulating the console's behavior using the hardware itself, so there is no additional input lag created from overhead.

    Being a handheld device using FPGA is big reason why I jumped on grabbing one recently. It doesn't have as many logic elements as the mister does. I think the analogue pocket is at 64k logic elements vs 110k on the MiSTER, based on what I read online. With the community support having ramped up even more so since this video, there's a boatload of supported cores for the analog pocket now. Essentially up to the 4th generation of consoles should be fully supported as of this message iirc. If you have the funds for this kind of hobby, it's a fantastic device with specs to match, and FPGA is brilliant.

    Hey Bob, I'm probably pulling down the Core listing since now there's an API page that has the cores/install dates. Just figured you'd want to know since we keep taking stuff down that you reference in videos lol. The API Cores thing is listed in the Links on the r/AnalogueInc subreddit but we can get it added on both. We agree its a bit confusing lol.

    "Are you excited at this current state of emulation hardware coming out all the time, or are you frustrated because by the time you put money down on something, something newer and better is already out?"
    Definitely a mix of both, and it's definitely extremely nostalgic for both reasons back to when NIntendo was still making handhelds and this exact thing was constantly happening. Pretty much starting with Gameboy Pocket in 1996, all the way up to 2017, for over 20 years, every 1-2 years there would be a new system or a new, way better version of the current system.

    I play Retro, sometimes, and, after owning a Retroid Pocket 2 and the Evercade I came to a conclusion: I need a bigger screen. Those games were designed for tv , both in term of graphics and gameplay so when you squeeze them in a 3.5 inch screen they play differently, at the very least. Never mind reading text. So if I ever buy a new retro handhed it needs at least a 5 inch screen. So for me this new handheld here, whilst looking great, doesn't do it for me, the screen is too small.

    Mostly I use a hacked Vita for emulation. The stuff that it can't handle well or at all, the Steam Deck can usually handle. I like the idea of the Analogue Pocket, but I don't have enough carts to make good use of its main feature. I do keep wanting to get one for the horrible reason of using it with a game boy camera though.

    what you said at the end about getting frustrated with the scene kinda rang true for me. like one month after I bought my RP2+ they finally announced the RP3 lmao. But it's a good problem to have honestly, I've had my eye on this scene since like 2014 and it's cool to see it finally in a place I had once only hoped for.

    Do you need an SD card to even use it out of the box? And what size and brand do I need? I’ve never even formatted an SD card before either, will the console format it for me like anything else does? I have so many questions and the group I joined on Facebook just told me to look at the pinned comments but I want fast answers instead of looking around blindly.

    The advancing technologies are a bit frustrating albeit cool. It's like you said as soon as you find something that works for you something better comes out. For me. It was retro collecting. Then it was upgrading the screens on my handhelds. Then the Nintendo switch expansion pack came out. Then everdrives. Replaced my physical cartridges because collecting cartridges is so expensive and now we have machines like the analog pocket and the miyoo mini plus

    Just wish they could get these systems out faster. I’m on the 2nd shipment allotment and the only people that have one is the first shipment folks. Still have to wait to get the machine. Seems like a great device, only getting greater, but definitely the main released system that has the toughest job actually getting units out compared to everybody else.
