Treating Puppy Diarrhea at Home (and when to worry)

- Puppy diarrhea can be really messy. It can also be quite worrying because, after all, they are only young and they don't have an awful lot of body reserves. I'm going to go through the causes of puppy diarrhea as well as how you can treat diarrhea in a puppy it at home - and when you should worry and seek help from your veterinarian
At the very beginning, it is really important to distinguish between a puppy who has diarrhea but is otherwise well and healthy, compared to a puppy who is also unwell. Ask yourself these questions:
- Are they also vomiting?
- Are they continuing to gain weight?
- Is your puppy still playing?
- Have they stopped eating or drinking?
- Are they more quiet than normal?
Not only are the potential causes of diarrhea different, the speed at which you need to seek professional help and treatment is also different. In fact, if your puppy is unwell then you should stop reading now and call your vet to schedule an appointment today.
For a puppy who is otherwise happy and eating, there are three main common causes of diarrhea.
1 - They’ve eaten something funny
2 - Intestinal parasites (especially worms)
3 - Diet intolerance
You can treat these at home quite successfully. More persistent diarrhea, or if your puppy is also unwell, can be caused by many other diseases which will need your veterinarian to successfully diagnose and treat.

My very healthy 8 year old shorkie stopped eating and was vomiting all of the sudden and now having seizures.I was going to take him to the vet but my poor Teddy bear has now left us😭 I am totally heartbroken right now and it’s 1am. The next couple of weeks are going to be so hard without his presence😭 he was such a character❣️

I have 10 weeks puppy. When I brought him home he did not eat dry food from the seller, so I boiled him chicken breast and after diarrhea started. We visited VET 3 times. We got some paste for him, and another dose of panacur. His stools were examined and no issue were found. At the moment he still has diariah. After night it is bright yellow colour runny diarrhea, day time it just a normal colour diarrhea. He is very playful, very active, he is eating dry food Hills with chicken not bad. I started to think maybe he is allergic to chicken? As it started after I gave it to him. Want him to be healthy and strong. Normal puppy.
Hi there, my puppy is going through something similar. 3rd vet visit and on Panacur too but still lively and otherwise normal apart from the diahorrhea. Looking to change his diet, I'd be interested to know if your puppy does have an intolerance to chicken? Thanks
Omg! My puppy is 10 weeks and I am having the EXACT same thing! I am beginning to think it is giardia or a food allergy. I tried Puppy Chow and Blue Buffalo puppy formula. NOTHING changed. Back to boiled chicken and rice.. not cleared up 100% but better … when I tried to incorporate a little bit of puppy food The diarrhea started immediately again. I am going to try Purina Pro Plan Puppy food. It is for puppies with sensitive tummies. If that does not work, and it will be interesting to see what the vet says. I’m calling the vet today to see if they tested for giardia when they tested her stool last week. Did either one of you have any luck getting your puppies diarrhea cleared up? And if so what did you do? What worked for you?

Hello! My mother in law has gotten a puppy maybe 3 Months from Mexico, we don’t know the breed he is super small doesn’t have fleas but is super super itchy and constantly having diarrhea. The food we put him on doesn’t seem to change his itchy ness and diarrhea. We don’t know what to do. Do you have any ideas?
so my brand new puppy (4 month old) has soft stool, not diarrhea but it's not the tootsie rolls I'm used to seeing. It comes out like soft serve ice cream and maintains a formed shape. He -has- vomited twice, mostly of the food. In one vomit it was basically looked like a couple of soaked kibbles and saliva. He plays lots, drinks lots, eats his kibble, etc. I dont know if I should be worried or if I should just change try to the food first? His poop also smells strongly, stronger than a human's. It's kind of hard to see a doctor these days with covid going around.
My puppy has the same thing. 4 months old, vomited twice but it was literally water soaked kibble and that’s it. He has soft stool not like straight watery diarrhea just mushy soft stool. What ended up happening with your puppy?
@@MissRachelMarie It stopped after a few days. We just didn't let him move around after he ate for around half an hour to an hour to make sure he digested it all before he was allowed to play. And we fed smaller meals.
Did you go back to milk or did your puppy get better on its own

I would love advice. Our poodle is 3 months old. He had his 2nd shots a week and a half ago. The day after I was to give him his deworming med pill but it is also a flea and tick pill. Well he has had diarrhea about 6 times since then. It improved when I fed him chicken breast and ride for one full day then I went back to his kibble and some soft dog food..now he is back to diarrhea😟 he was very healthy at his appointment. The breeder also deformed him before I picked him up..so is this from the 3 vaccines they gave or that pill the day after. All I know is that he was perfect before I went to the vet.
Honestly I think dewormer is bad for puppies, seems to give them chronic diaahrea and just makes the vets money..
Can I ask? Does your doggo sleeps a lot when he had diarrhea? Mine sleeps a lot and losses appetite. I'm really worried. I went to the vet and bought some meds. Idk ehy my pup's tummy is pumping for no reason

My puppy’s 8 weeks I bought her from some one her stool was normal for 3 days then she’s been eating solid food and drinking water as well as playing I notice she tends to over eat and drink then becomes bloated can this cause her to have diarrhea? Do I feed her less ? she has diarrhea about 3-4 times daily and some diarrhea has a bit of blood and some diarrhea don’t ? Some stools are normal looking but very soft .

Heya Dr. Alex, hope you're doing well!
We have now got a friend for Molly, she is a (nearly) 8 month old Goldador called Pontiac (stepdad loves American classic cars!). She was one of a few left over from a litter, so we got her at 5 months old. Ever since we've had her however, and she went on to food we have given her, she has had regular repeated episodes of diarrhea. She shows no other signs of illness is mostly very playful.
We had her on a chicken-based puppy food first, but then switched her onto wainwrights that was fish-based. On that she started having firmer poos, but when that little bag was running out we started incorporating her original chicken food back to see. She very quickly got diarrhea again. So we got another little bag of the wainwrights fish biscuits again and she seemed to be not too bad again, however with loose stools here and there.
Then she started rubbing her buim on the floor - Ah... worming time - this was at the start of this month. There were definitely worms - unsurprising really beacuse she tries to eat practicallt everything, including rabbit poo at the field and her own poo, which we've been working on and she's doing better with that although still will try to if you don't watch her.
Once that bag of food was running out, we think that it could potentially be chicken that she has the problem with. However mum is not keen on spending out for the wainwrights as it's a bit pricey for her, so she quickly grabs what she can find that isn't chicken based from.... Lidl. A cheap turkey-based food that's first ingredient is Maize :/ Well, we tried her on it - but diarrhea fully back again. We stopped her on that and fed her on boiled rice mixed with tinned makeral for a few days and her poo started firming up a bit.
So then I ordered her some Autarky biscuit food, theirr grain free fish-based one and she's now on that which I've tried to introduce a bit at a time mixed with last portions of the rice she had, but now she's getting loose stools again :( But she's only been on it a few days so far, so basically I was wondering, how long should we continue her on it before writing it off? We are also only giving her cod skin natural treats and sprats, and on her lickimat I mush a bit of banana and small amount of 100% peanut butter.
She does also get a small amount of goat's milk in the morning too after her morning walk.
On her dinner, I have been giving her a scoop and a half of natural digestion aid powder which has pro & prebiotics, plus a sprinkle of seaweed (like 'plaqueoff', for her teeth).

hi Bex. sound like. frustrating problem although if Pontiac is full of energy and growing well then it's likely not too serious or her. I would suggest sticking to a single diet for a month to assess if there is going to be a change, althou it will often be much quicker. also, with long term gut issues, somethinglike hills GI Biome is ideal for resetting gut health. really try and limit any extras as the more different things being fed, the more chance of giving something that's upsetting her. once you've got things settled then you can add in things one by one and try and find a long term diet. if the wainwright's works then it's going to be better than cheap lidl food that contains who knows what! as well as keeping up worming, long term diarrhea also means scooting could be full anal glands. hope that helps!

My puppy is 7 weeks old and got a diarrhea after I fed him some lactose free goat milk. I stopped giving it but the diarrhea still continues. It couldn’t be worms right? He already had his first vaccination
It's more likely to be dietary, but if he hasn't been wormed for a couple of weeks it won't hurt to treat him. If he's unwell in himself then you will need to get him checked as well

Please change your puppies food Buffalo is the worst for dogs !!! Gives them a lot of issues including heart failure etc

@@jsaobd22 i will say she’s grown now and she’s absolutely okay and it didn’t last long. just give your pup time i think it just takes a while for their stomach to get used to the new diet and digestion. could also be lots of water

@@alexquiambao06 shes more than a year old now but when she was still a pup i fed her simple nourishment puppy food the sweet potato and gave her it 3 times a day i believe i gave her a 2/3 scoop if i remember correctly. once every 5 hours. when transitioning i slowly added more of the different kibble everyday to get her used to it.

I'm afraid there is not much I can suggest over the internet apart from trying to keep him well hydrated. He sounds really sick and needs to see someone in person to help if at all possible.

SO I have had my puppy since may 27th. The first week she had diarrhea I freaked out with the blood and took her to the ER. Covid and no vets taking her. 400 dollars later I Was told she was fine. Now 2 days ago she got diarrhea again and it is pure water the color of pumpkin because I was trying that. It did not work. No lethargy, still acting like a normal 3 1/2 month old pup but it is scary help... I tried chicken and rice tonight within 3 minutes she was out the door.
I checked and put pressure on her tummy it doesn't seem to pain her. I think she got ahold of something but not sure what. IT has been 48 hours should I worry or give it a couple days. She will still eat drinks ton of water.

I get distressed easily seeing emaciated dogs in street like you showed in that footage because of my past living in the third world country. It makes me very sensitive, may i know if anybody helped that white dog that looks abandoned from that footage you showed? Info will help ease my mind. Thx

normally puppy poop is yellow and soft. If you're worried you should call your vet as diarrhoea can be very dangerous in young puppies

Take her to the vet immidately before it'a too late. My 2 dogs stool had blood and mucus in it so we take her to the vet and thankfully we are not too late. They gave them medicine and they are fine now.

I just got me a puppy. She is 8 weeks old.
She developed diarrhea and has had it for longer then normal after I've given her the parvo + distemper shot and dewormer.
I'm still seeing worms in her liquid diarrhea but not as much.
I'm concerned so I'm making an appointment and taking her to see our vet soon.
She is eating alot of good healthy dog food but is loosing weight fast and she eats like she can't get enough food.
So I fear it is tape worm.

Update: I've taken her to the vet, she was sick. Long story boring, she got her shots updated because this is a process. And they gave me medicine and antibiotics for her diarrhea and now it had gotten alot better.
I've got her on a health plan too. In two weeks gotta take her back for more boosters. Also when she comes of age she will be spayed.

If he doesn't have energy then it will be best to get him checked over as very young puppies can go downhill very quickly

some boiled chicken and rice or scrambled egg for a day or 2. a good quality puppy food is normally fine as well, just avoid anything high in fat or salt

I'm sorry to read this, apart from trying to get him to a vet the most I can suggest is to keep him warm and try and encourage eating and drinking

very young puppies tend to have a yellow/brown sticky stool so it may be normal. Hydration and monitoring weight for growth is very important

I'm a first time pet owner and my pup is about 4 months old and he has a diarrhoea and he's vomiting started just about 4hrs ago. his poop is still brown, but is kinda watery and he's vomiting something like sticky water? he undergone deworming, my mom makes sure he's dewormed every month. i think he has a bad stomach? and i don't know what to do. this is the first time i owned a pup and there's no open vet near our home plus I'm getting sick worried as he's quite and he looks sick. :( pls give me advice. :(

@@falconx6194 hi. my pup is okay as of now. he already ate and is not that weak anymore. i made him eat shredded chicken because my parents read that chicken is good for pups who's not feeling well. though his poop is still watery, but i make sure he's hydrated. he was playing a little earlier which is a good sign that he's doing great.
and i also made sure to make him burp so he won't be bloated.

We went on a small car ride with my puppy and she vomited afterwards, we thought it was car sickness but when we got home we saw that she had vomited on her bed we think it’s stress since our baby cousin came over and scared her a lot. Then we noticed she was having diarrhea and pooped all over the pads 3 times in a row and vomited 3 times in a row...she is also 9 weeks only

A sudden change to a very different diet can certainly cause soft stools. It should settle down in a few days but ideally with any diet change it should be done gradually over a week or so

a vomiting puppy, especially when it's more than once is normally something to take seriously so I'd suggest talking to your vet
Your telling the cause not the treatment...
and then outline the treatment for each main cause, as it is only by understanding the cause that you can successfully treat it
